An utterly unique accomplishment, Scott Walker's THE DRIFT is the enigmatic British-based singer-songwriter's first official album since 1995's challenging TILT. Those looking for the Brechtian drama and crooner stylings of Walker's lauded late-'60s work will happily find them on these 10 haunting tracks, albeit in altered forms that often bypass melody to create what sometimes recalls a chilling sonic abstraction of Edgar Allan Poe's writings.

Not a new album as such, Shapes is actually the re-release of three 12" singles from just after the time of Bola's debut, Soup, in the late '90s. That makes Shapes a bit of a long-distance equivalent to, say, Aphex Twin's Chosen Lords, but regardless of provenance what's striking about the disc is how well it works throughout -- in an era when IDM now seems almost totally played out on many fronts, Shapes actually has some heft and impact to it. Credit perhaps to the limitations of the original release and its format, designed for dancing as much as contemplation. The elegant opening cut, untitled like the rest of the songs, is a classic slow burn and build of a song, dark, almost industrial basslines providing the anchor for an increasingly hyperactive but never flat-out chaotic percussion montage, finally breaking into a sweetly serene concluding keyboard part. It's little surprise that the steady and varied releases from To Rococo Rot would eventually produce enough tracks never released on CD to justify a compilation of them. And so Taken from Vinyl is just that, but in an admittedly clever move, the band lives up to the title of the compilation by noting that most of the tracks were, quite literally, mastered from vinyl -- sometimes by necessity but in other cases simply because it suited their original appearance. Fans fearing the type of jumps and skips that plagued years of Fall reissues (for instance) can rest assured that's not the case here -- it's even mixed together to seem like a special podcast from the band's archives.
