Alastair Galbraith's creative restlessness and collaborative spirit have long been one of his hallmarks, so it's not surprising that nearly a quarter century after his first recorded work in the Rip he would start up a full new band, working with his singer/multi-instrumentalist wife Maxine Funke and percussionist Mike Dooley. Waves and Particles, the Hundred Dollar Band's debut, shows that Galbraith and company certainly aren't inclined to mellow out with age; starting abruptly with a fade-up into "Hope," presumably part of a larger piece and featuring Galbraith and Funke's dueling violin/cello combination, makes for an attention-grabbing as well as a dissonantly beautiful start. Almost but not entirely wholly instrumental, elements of Waves and Particles will be familiar to fans of Galbraith's work in general in terms of basic approach but has its own clear identity away from such work as A Handful of Dust or the Matthew De Gennaro duets, instead being improvisation in a rock band guise. As a whole, Waves and Particles almost feels like a sampler of a larger series of efforts; the liner notes give nothing away, but the shifts in recording ambience and context -- at least one song is clearly from a live performance with a slightly talkative audience -- help show this as much as anything. It's actually a very interesting way of presenting the work, and the feeling of the whole album makes for an often entrancing series of songs that have an overall similarity while also showing differences -- the piercing, high-end mix of sounds on "Chronicle Fireworks" and the extended exploration "Chronicle Pit," for instance, bear no direct similarity beyond the names. There's also an interesting nod to Galbraith's past with the inclusion of a version of "Midnight Blue," originally done with the one-off group Plagal Grind in 1990. The Hundred Dollar Band version does it proud, Dooley's rumbling drums pushing the interplay of electric guitar and cello forward steadily. ~ Ned Raggett

Waves And Particles album
$14.45 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand. It's a lovely and redemptive outing that looks back to go forward. When Cash turned 18, her father, alarmed that his daughter only knew the songs that were getting played on the radio, gave her a list of what he considered 100 essential American songs; Cash kept that list, and now she's drawn on it for this wonderfully nuanced outing ...

Waves And Particles CD music
$11.19 Often, supergroups wind up dominated by one particular personality - think Eric Clapton in Derek & the Dominos, Jack White in the Raconteurs -- which makes the egalitarianism of Them Crooked Vultures all the more remarkable. Of course, when it comes down to it, it's a group of three natural-born collaborators: John Paul Jones, the old studio pro who gravitated toward provocative partners after Led Zeppelin's demise, teaming up with R.E.M. as easily as he did with avant-queen Diamanda Galas and nu-folkster Sara Watkins; Dave Grohl, who hopped into ...
| | Avett Brothers I And Love And You CD (2009)
Waves And Particles music CDs
$11.15 North Carolina sibling duo the Avett Brothers return in 2009, fresh off a few years of building a cult following for its melodic and rootsy alt-bluegrass sound, with the subdued I AND LOVE AND YOU. The opening single and title track basks in piano-pop splendor in an odd mix of Beach Boys, Byrds, and the Band.
The Avett Brothers continue charting the same ...

Waves And Particles songs
$21.29 The pairing of Compass Point and I've Got Something to Say is the oddest of the two-fers issued by Bear Family as volume five in their David Allan Coe Columbia retrospective. On his ninth and tenth albums for Columbia, Coe was still looking for respect from radio program directors in Nash Vegas and nationwide -- and wasn't getting it, despite the ace production team of Billy Sherrill and Ron Bledsoe. Compass Point is the most reflective of Coe's albums in the sense that it seemingly constantly looks back to the previous, and most of that isn't pretty; in fact, it's full of regret and remorse, but the determination to transcend as well. The percussion tracks are straight out ...
