Seven album
$10.25 Stoney LaRue is a singer/songwriter based in Stillwater, OK, one of the leaders of a local outlaw country scene collectively dubbed Red Dirt, after the dominant topographical feature of central Oklahoma. LaRue's debut, The Red Dirt Album, is both a personal coming-out of a fairly gifted singer/songwriter and the mission statement of an entire collective of bands, including Cross Canadian Ragweed (led by singer/songwriter Cody Canada) and Jason Boland & the Stragglers, key figures from which appear here in vocal, instrumental, and songwriting roles. It's as if the Elephant 6 bands had been heavily influenced by Jerry Jeff Walker's Viva Terlingua and the rest of the Luckenbach, ...

| | Trent Summar Horseshoes & Hand Grenades CD (2006) Digipak
Seven album
$10.09 Country music is known for cornball wordplay, and sometimes for genuinely clever humor. Sarcastic wit, on the other hand, is likely to get you barred from the Grand Ole Opry, not that they care much about the Grand Ole Opry in Texas, which is where Trent Summar (and most of his fellow country-rock wiseguys) come from. So after he blows the barn doors down with his hard-rocking (and hilarious) title track, he happily goes on to have his way with the Bakersfield sound on "Love You," which features a bridge constructed out of a mariachi version of the "Ring of Fire" guitar lick, and to put the "twang" in "twangerrific" with the muscular "Hayride," and to force bluesy rockabilly into the service of one of the nastier kiss-off songs in recent memory. For humor, the pièce de résistance is his version of the George Jones classic "He Stopped Loving Her Today," which starts off as a respectful but lackluster cover and then suddenly morphs into breakneck hardcore punk rock on the chorus. For pure lusftul honky tonk fun, the pièce ...
| | Lucinda Williams West CD (2007) Digipak
Seven CD music
$11.45 Like Billie Holiday, John Lee Hooker, and Kurt Cobain, among others, Lucinda Williams is an artist with that certain difficult-to-define quality, the ability to channel the collective soul through a voice that is intimate, personal, and entirely her own. WEST, Williams's 2007 release, bears all the hallmarks of her best work: excellent songcraft, poetically tough lyrics, and her angel-on-morphine voice. As an album, it is her most consistent and appealing since 1998's CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD.
Williams's seemingly odd choice to work with mainstream pop producer Hal Willner works wonderfully. Willner built ...

Seven songs

Billy Joel's historic tour of the U.S.S.R. in the mid-'80s was a groundbreaking one. Through the warm welcome by the Russian audiences and unexpected clashes with the Soviet authorities, Joel carved out a path through the then-Soviet Union that other Western rock acts would follow. As a souvenir from the monumental tour, KOHUEPT (Russian for "concert") encapsulates some unique performances that are a treasure for any true fan of the piano man.
From the opening traditional Russian piece "Odoya," sung by the Georgian singing group Zhournalist, this is a very special performance. Leading from there into a brilliant rendition of the rocking ...
