Despite being the principal songwriter and sound architect for Fleetwood Mac, one of the biggest selling pop/rock bands in music history, Lindsey Buckingham's standing as "pop genius" has always been a topic of debate amongst rock musos. UNDER THE SKIN (2006), Buckingham's first solo album in nearly 15 years, contains all of the hallmarks of the artist's singular approach and presents a solid illustration of his musical brilliance. A studio scientist if there ever was one, Buckingham surrounds his acoustic-based songs (many of which hint at the aforementioned discussion over his legacy) with the same pristine, near-compulsively textured production that made "Second Hand News" and "Monday Morning" such revelations. And while UNDER THE SKIN is considerably more subtle and impressionistic than Fleetwood Mac's smashes, it doesn't lack for the band's sonic majesty. This album isn't going to be Buckingham's personal RUMORS, but it will certainly remind listeners why that album specifically and his talent in general need not be debated.
Personnel: Lindsey Buckingham (vocals, various instruments); John McVie (bass guitar); Mick Fleetwood (percussion).
Rolling Stone (p.70) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "With its skewed pop melodies, home-brewed sonic trickery and blazing fingerpicking, UNDER THE SKIN is a mesmerizing return to the side of Buckingham that birthed the proto-indie-pop strangeness of 1979's TUSK." Rolling Stone (p.108) - Ranked #42 in Rolling Stone's "The Top 50 Albums Of 2006" -- "[T]he eccentricity of SKIN suits Buckingham's reflections on his past life and current blessings." Entertainment Weekly (p.70) - "His fingerpicking is impossibly frantic in its nervous virtuosity, and each near-whisper is miked to sound like a scream. It's the spartan-yet-gonzo sound of a guy remembering he can go his own way." -- Grade: B+ No Depression (p.100) - "His relentless fingerpicking is powerful on 'Not Too Late' and 'Shut Us Down'; his vocal overdubbing is inspired on 'Show You How' and 'Cast Away Dreams'." (p.133) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "A proper solo affair featuring Buckingham's breathy vocals, acoustic guitar and little else, UNDER THE SKIN knits accessible Buckingham together with his more daring side." Mojo (Publisher) (p.118) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "It is in essence a modern folk record, its minimalist beauty reminiscent of Nick Drake or John Martyn..." | | David Gilmour About Face CD (1984) Remastered
Under The Skin
$7.59 Combining layered vocals with a heavily looped guitar sound, "Until We Sleep" begins ABOUT FACE with an almost Byrds-like quality, while the gentleness of the acoustic opening to the ballad "Murder" disguises its homicidal subject matter. Both "Love On ...
| | David Gilmour CD (1978) Remastered
Under The Skin
$6.79 Before David Gilmour virtually "became" Pink Floyd he was always the most likely member of the band (with the possible exception of de-facto leader Roger Waters) to release a solo album. 1978's welcome eponymous debut showcased his multi-faceted performing talents.
The album opener "Mihalis" is an ANIMALS period instrumental, which, along with "Raise My Rent," sounds like an outtake from that album. The beautiful "There's No Way Out of Here" begins with a lonely harmonica and, with "No Way" and "I Can't Breathe Anymore," expounds the album's main theme of being trapped in an untenable situation. "Cry From the Streets" is a nod to the blues, while the lovely "So Far Away" harks back to the ballads of OBSCURED BY CLOUDS. Almost a missing mid-period Floyd album, this solo effort is a must-have for all Pink Floyd fans.
By the time of David Gilmour's solo debut, he had not only ...
| | Electric Light Orchestra A New World Record - Expanded Edition CD (1976) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Under The Skin
$7.59 Also available in a 3-pack with FACE THE MUSIC and DISCOVERY.
1976's A NEW WORLD RECORD is both a classic of commercial '70s pop and an archetypal ELO album. From the outer-space synths and rich orchestrations that open the album to Jeff Lynne's meticulous production and Beatlesque melodies, A NEW WORLD RECORD is magnificent ear candy. Both ambitious enough to appeal to "serious" rock fans and ultra-catchy enough to sound terrific on Top 40 radio (the plaintively gorgeous, McCartney-like "Telephone Line" and the anthemic "Livin' Thing" were well-deserved smashes), ELO was one of the few '70s bands whose appeal covered both the FM and AM spectrums. The album even resurrects "Do Ya," a classic single by Lynne's former band, the Move, in a splashy new version.
The next ELO album, 1977's elaborate double-album OUT OF THIS WORLD, was probably the band's commercial high point, but A NEW WORLD RECORD is the group's artistic high-water ...

Master Sound releases are 24-karat gold CDs remastered from first-generation masters. This process utilizes 20-bit technology and Sony's revolutionary "Super Bit Mapping" system.
ELO was big enough by 1974 that some people actually suggested that ELDORADO featured Satanic backward-masking. Of course, the idea was ludicrous; but the band playfully responded by adding a backward message to "Fire on High," the opening instrumental on 1975's ...
| | Lindsey Buckingham Gift Of Screws CD (2008)
Under The Skin
$15.65 Coming two years after UNDER THE SKIN, Fleetwood Mac guitarist Lindsey Buckingham's GIFT OF SCREWS represents the shortest gap ever between his solo releases. Where UNDER THE SKIN was a sparse, often meditative, acoustic-based album, GIFT OF SCREWS boasts a full-sounding production and an embrace of the rich pop-rock sound that made Buckingham famous, but it's still largely performed by the multi-talented artist himself. There are a few guest contributions from the Mac rhythm section and others, but this is mostly ...

| | Atlantic Flowers CD (2006)
Under The Skin
$13.25 Conceived as a co-release between three labels in countries all bordering on said ocean -- Clairecords in the U.S., Midsummer Madness in Brazil, and Alison in Germany -- Atlantic Flowers functions as a nice joint compilation of the trio's various bands. The general focus of all three is on explorations in post-punk/goth/shoegaze/indie pop in any number of combinations, though generally speaking with a calm, understated air. Certainly exceptions exist, though, such as Aerial Love Feed doing a pretty good late-'80s Jesus & Mary Chain ...
