This 2006 release (their first on the Epicac label, 10th overall) finds Mouse on Mars in a typically playful mood, but with perhaps a more frantic and harder edge than fans have come to expect. The beats here are aggressive, with abrasive layers of sound that build in intensity. The duo pays noisy respects to their Krautrock forebears on "Duul" and the Kraftwerk-esque "Retphase," and they hypnotize with the thwack-thump electronica of "Inocular." As un-bubbly as VARCHARZ may be, it is inspiring to witness an act still growing and poking at the edges 10 albums into their career.

Mouse on Mars: Jan St. Werner, Andi Toma.

Spin (p.102) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "VARCHARZ is all textures and contrasts: fractured, propulsive beats, catchy pop hooks, eight-bit video-game bleeps, booty-friendly jams, and moments of well-earned tranquility."
The Wire (p.57) - "[A] clear documentation of the duo's process, with multiple creative impulses all finding their place..."

One wants to believe in Brian and Karen Tregaskin, because who wouldn't be charmed by the heartwarming tale of two Cornish musicians who find themselves at the center of a bidding war won by the Aphex Twin's label? A star is born, and all that. But forget romance: denials abounding to the contrary, the Tuss is Aphex. Richard D. James has returned and after an initial EP, Confederation Trough, which got the conspiracy theories going, Rushup Edge finds the frenetic hypergenius still cackling his way around life and having fun with his international cult as he goes. Having reinvented a slew of perceptions of what electronic music could do as much as kicking against the worship of new clichés he ended up establishing, James' side-step into guerrilla releases and stone-faced responses makes perfect sense: he's been using similar obfuscations right from the start. But Rushup Edge is, dare it be said, the most straightforwardly warm sounding thing he's done since the early '90s. If it's hardly straight-up, four-to-the-floor house or something similar, the swooping melody bursts and the frenetic but not crushing basslines of the opening "Synthacon 9," for example, counterbalance ...

HANGABLE AUTO BULB compiles 2 volumes of the previously vinyl-only EPs, originally released in 1995. Released a few months after 1995's I CARE BECAUSE YOU DO, Aphex Twin's two vinyl-only HANGABLE AUTO BULB EPs (presented under the alias AFX) became highly sought-after collectibles for electronica fans. Last Boat
Brent Arnold Last Boat CD  (2004)

Varcharz songs
CD $10.59  Audio Samples
Brent Arnold leads a bit of a musical double life. He splits his time between playing cello and creating lush arrangements for Northwestern indie rockers like Modest Mouse, Mike Johnson, and Sleater-Kinney and playing with avant jazzers like Andrew Drury and Eyvind Kang. On his first album under his own name, he has chosen the former path. Last Boat is a intricately arranged, emotionally charged indie rock record that nimbly straddles the line between Northwest moroseness and chamber pop good cheer. Arnold has a simple, unprepossessing voice that hovers below the intertwining guitars and sawing strings. The band he has assembled is suitably restrained, and their vocal harmonies abet Arnold's cause winningly. The best tracks on the record, like the heartbroken "I Broke the Seal" (which sports an exhilarating middle section that takes flight unexpectedly), the Beatles-inspired "Mayfly," or the perky "A Letter," sound like what Eric Matthews might have whipped up if he collaborated with Doug Martsch. Only a few times does Arnold stumble; the overcooked "Last Boat" and the dirge-y "Fate" are less than wonderful. Otherwise, this is a fine ...
Rockin' From Coast To Coast, Vol. 3
Rockin' From Coast To Coast, Vol. 3 CD  (2004)

Varcharz album
CD $14.95
Like the previous volumes in the Rockin' From Coast to Coast series, this is heavily populated by obscure, raucous, at times raw rockabilly and rock & roll from the late 1950s and early 1960s. There are 26 tracks here, in fact, and other than Mickey & Sylvia, the Fendermen, and Don Covay (represented by a 1958 single on which he sounds like Little Richard), none of the artists are well-known, though those with deeper-than-average-'50s rock collections might know a little about Kid Thomas, Elroy Dietzel, Ted Taylor, and Hank Mizell. If it's the best early rock & roll you're after -- even if it's the best rare early rock & roll you're after -- you're better off with numerous other compilations. But this anthology isn't geared toward that kind of collector; it's more for fanatics who might admit that Little Richard, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Chuck Berry really were better than the hordes of no-names who tried to ape them, but love the style so much that they want to get as much of it as they can. You'll find plenty of derivative cuts of hotfoot-strength intensity here, and the imitative qualities are sometimes blatant. Jamie Coe tries his damnedest to re-create Berry's "Sweet Little Sixteen" on the Bobby Darin-penned "Summer Symphony," for instance, but (aside the fact that he's white) he's no more a Chuck Berry than Dan Quayle was John F. Kennedy. And as is often the case in these groupings, it's the song by the most famous artist -- Mickey & Sylvia's torrid "No Good Lover," which has been easily available on Mickey & Sylvia compilations -- that makes by far the deepest impression. It's not all forgettable, though, particularly when it strays off the Presley-Little Richard path. Shirley Cadell sounds like a blend of Brenda Lee and Wanda Jackson on "The Big Bounce," for instance, and Mary Petti sounds like Brenda Lee going really wild on her 1962 single "Hey, Lawdy Lawdy" (issued not on an independent, as so many such efforts were, but on the giant RCA). Flash Terry leads off ...
