(7 Customer Reviews)
The result is a light, breezy affair that showcases Manilow's easy-going charm, as revealed on his gentle versions of the Righteous Brothers' "Unchained Melody" and the Everly Brothers' "All I Have to Do Is Dream." Wisely avoiding over-the-top arrangements, this record presents a lush, restrained sound that allows Manilow's velvety voice to shine, making it one of the performer's finest studio albums in decades.
A companion piece to the similarly self-explanatory GREATEST SONGS OF THE FIFTIES, GREATEST SONGS OF THE SIXTIES finds Barry Manilow tackling the pop songbook of the decade just prior to the one he helped define. Smartly relying on the Bacharach/David songbook, Manilow picked a solid set of familiar adult-contemporary tunes that fit his own increasingly jazzy and ballad-oriented style. Although a medley of the Association's big hits "Cherish" and "Windy" features the surviving members harmonizing behind Manilow's lead, it's an otherwise solo show, and Manilow is in fine voice throughout.
A significant album for Barry Manilow, THE GREATEST SONGS OF THE FIFTIES finds the Brooklyn-born crooner taking on tunes that were popular in his youth. This 2006 outing also marks Manilow's return to his former label, Arista, with the company's founder, Clive Davis, setting the singer up with 1950s pop classics much in the way that the savvy businessman steered Rod Stewart in the direction of jazzy standards.
Personnel: Barry Manilow (vocals, piano); Ken Berry (guitar); Gary Grant (trumpet); Dave Carpenter (bass instrument); Russ McKinnon (drums); Paulinho Da Costa (percussion); The Association.

I do love his version of the Vikki Carr arrangement "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" the best. Good luck with this and if those who are reading this cant be nice go elsewhere God doesnt like ugly! Nice music arrangement The music arrangement is really good. It could be a great easy listening music if the producer could release it without the vocal, just the music only.
I like this album.
Those who gave a "cruel" review to Barry Manilow are in denial. They may listening in a closet by now. Barry Manilow started as a pop singer, not a rocker in the sense of Rod Stewart or Robert Plant.
Barry's voice is suitable for this type of music. And these songs are good.
When talking about Rod Stewart singing those American Standards vol. 1 through vol. 4, that is different topic. But a lot of grandmas and grandpas love it, so be it. A win-win situation.

Give Barry alot of credit for this Great job! Ohhh lets not be so harsh onn Barry, he's a surviver and his tribute to Vikki Carr with Cant Take My Eyes Off You (her turntable hit/signature concert stopper) sounds lively and what Barry needs to do more of. When will Vikki and Barry so a CD together? They have worked together in Oliver and Company as Vikki's producer, and appeared on a Latin variety show that he was so glad to be standing next to Vikki and just chatting away! Great CD Barry...keep the stuff coming and do a duet with Vikki Carr! Submitted by Julio (Brownsville, Texas) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
had enough He should stick with Mandy.
Barry's greatest songs of the 60's are hardly THE greatest songs of the 60's!He can probably record all of these in an hour. Did he get this idea from Rod Stewert or what? Submitted by Bill (Jacksonville, Fl.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Since 1981's TORCH, Carly Simon has recorded three more collections of pre-rock standards. 2005's MOONLIGHT SERENADE is the best of the lot, and one of the best albums of standards yet recorded by a singer of Simon's generation. It beats the pants off of similar sets by Linda Ronstadt and Rod Stewart, for example. For one thing, Simon is simply a great singer, even at this late stage in her career; she's taken care of her instrument, and her tone throughout MOONLIGHT SERENADE ...

| | Corinne Bailey Rae CDs (2006) Deluxe Edition
Greatest Songs Of The Sixties CD music
$18.15 Despite the fact that English vocalist Corinne Bailey Rae has the name of a country artist, and got her start playing in a grunge-inspired hard rock band, her self-titled debut is heavily steeped in 1970s-style soul and singer-songwriter intimacy. Rae's girlish, sultry voice might remind some listeners of Macy Gray, while the subtle shadings and jazzy textures of her tunes may bring to mind Nora Jones and Alicia Keys.
Yet Rae, who wrote or co-wrote each of the album's 11 tracks and provides much of the album's instrumentation as well, brings a distinctive stamp to the neo-soul formula. Her songwriting is strikingly personal and well-crafted, and her singing, which can be as cool as a Lester Young saxophone solo (the lilting "Like a Star") or as soulful and swinging as Sly Stone (the breakthrough single "Put Your Records On"), sets her apart from the pack. CORINNE BAILEY RAE is a solid and very promising debut.
When songstress Corinne Bailey Rae released her sashaying single "Put Your Records On" in her native U.K. it was a feel-good adult alternative phenomenon -- a kind of Norah Jones, Joss Stone, David Gray, or Macy ...
