(1 Customer Review)
SOMETHING TO BE PROUD OF: BEST OF 1999-2005 culls the highlights from Nashville-based duo Montgomery Gentry's first four albums. With one foot in the world of contemporary commercial country, and the other more in the area of Southern Rock (think Lynyrd Skynyrd and Charlie Daniels, whose collaboration with the band, "All Night Long, is mysteriously absent here), the duo made a splash at the turn of the millennium, and this set proves why. Since Montgomery Gentry's studio albums were pretty solid to begin with, this thirteen-track collection makes for a powerful dose of well-crafted redneck rock.
Montgomery Gentry: Dan Dugmore, Russ Pahl (acoustic guitar); David Campbell (strings); Reese Wynans (Hammond b-3 organ); Michael Rhodes (bass guitar); Greg Morrow (drums); Kenny Greenberg, Tom Bukovac (electronics); Perry Coleman (background vocals).

| | Brooks & Dunn Greatest Hits Collection II CD (2004)
Greatest Hits - Something To Be Proud Of CD music
$9.75 There's no denying that Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn ruled the pop/country roost throughout the 1990s, but this second volume of Brooks & Dunn hits shows that the phenomenally successful duo kept chugging along well beyond their early-'90s heyday. It's mainly occupied by tracks from the late '90s and early 2000s, interspersed with a few new bonus cuts to keep the faithful on board. Those who've kept up with the twosome's career will be familiar with the ground covered by the hits, from the old-school barroom weeper "I'll Never Forgive My Heart" to the ...
| | Brad Paisley Time Well Wasted CD (2005)
Greatest Hits - Something To Be Proud Of music CDs
$9.59 Brad Paisley's music is an interesting amalgam of country sub-genres, a paradigm all its own. He melds straightforward, pop-friendly New Country with clever, somewhat Lyle Lovett-like songwriting and the occasional flutter of Joe Maphis/Jimmy Bryant-style guitar virtuosity. Surprisingly or not, this country combo platter made Paisley a star, and TIME WELL WASTED continues in the aforementioned vein. While there are some fairly mainstream moments here that wouldn't ruffle ...
| | Carrie Underwood Some Hearts CD (2005)
Greatest Hits - Something To Be Proud Of songs
$9.59 Country purists may take offense at finding American Idol winner Carrie Underwood's debut album in the country section. An unabashedly manufactured commercial product, SOME HEARTS is the sound of mainstream country in the 2000s heavily steeped in glossy pop. There's nothing downhome or roots-conscious about Underwood's voice or looks: she's the pretty blonde next door with a fine singing voice, but the powers that be have made her a country artist, and that's what the public gets.
None of this is to say that SOME HEARTS is not a good pop album. The combination of Underwood's considerable gift and the slick, spot-on production of Dan Huff and Mark Bright makes for a fine package. Even on somewhat ...

With MUSIC, Madonna expands upon the electronic advances made on her previous album, RAY OF LIGHT. RAY producer William Orbit is back on board, joined by French artiste electronique Mirwais Ahmadzai. Both men aid Madonna in pursuing ever more sophisticated electronic soundscapes. The accent here is squarely on club-oriented dance music, as propulsive electronic beats and percolating synthesizers power such pure-pop confections as the title tune and "Runaway Lover." Even ...
| | David Ackles Subway To The Country CD (1970)
Greatest Hits - Something To Be Proud Of CD music
$11.59 The late songwriter David Ackles used his third album to further separate himself from the California tunesmith Cosa Nostra. Ackles was always a horse of a different color anyway. While comparisons to Randy Newman are natural and, in places even valid, they fall short of the mark. Ackles' music is much darker, already deeply entrenched in the American Gothic his fourth album would be named after. While the post-Tin Pan Alley stylings of Newman are evident here, Ackles' inspiration is in the original texts and not his Cali counterparts. Other sides of Ackles come ...
