| | Michael Lington Song For You CD Michael Lington Discography of CDs
Altoist Michael Lington interprets pop and R&B songs from the past 30 years on A Song for You. While Grover Washington, Jr. was quite capable of infusing similar music with soul, some improvising, and lots of bluesy riffs, Lington seems reluctant to do anything but meekly state the melodies. One wishes that this was David Sanborn's CD instead, for Lington's playing lacks soul, originality, or any real purpose, just playing it straight throughout the dull program. Guest Dave Koz adds a little bit of badly needed fire on "Tell Me All About It," but it is far from enough to make this pointless set memorable. Why record hits in versions that are far inferior to the originals? ~ Scott Yanow

Purchase Song For You CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Steve Cole Ny La CD (2003)
Song For You album
$9.09 Burgeoning smooth jazz superstar Steve Cole continues to bridge the gap between pop-jazz and classic R&B on his third studio album, NY LA. Featuring strong melodic statements and truly funky keyboards via the likes of Brian Culbertson and Marquis "Hami" Dair, NY LA is a moody and solid affair. From the disco-influenced "Off Broadway," which harkens back to the best work of the Crusaders, to the Donald Byrd-esque "Interlude IV," tenor saxophonist Cole deftly crosses the boundary from jazz soloist to R&B heavyweight. More Grover Washington, Jr. than Kenny G., Cole manages ...
| | Michael Lington Everything Must Change CD (2002)
Song For You CD music
$12.49 Some bop snobs would have listeners believe that smooth jazz is inherently evil because it is designed to attract R&B and pop audiences -- that commercialism is a place where only infidels, heretics, and blasphemers dwell. But truth be told, smooth jazz is what the artist chooses to make it; some pop-friendly jazz (Grover Washington, Jr., David Sanborn, Pat Metheny) has been quite creative. Unfortunately, a lot of radio-oriented smooth jazz tends to be contrived and formulaic, and more often than not, Michael Lington's Everything Must Change is a perfect example of an artist modeling himself after what NAC radio is playing instead of gambling with inspiration. The problem with much of this CD isn't the fact that Lington has been influenced by urban contemporary, funk, ...
| | Michael Lington Stay With Me CD (2004)
Song For You music CDs
$14.69 Altoist Michael Lington, who is strongly influenced by David Sanborn, performs quite earnestly on this CD, putting honest feeling into the melodies and creating lightly grooving, mildly funky background music. His smooth sound is pleasing, but there is little beyond that to recommend this disc or to distinguish it from dozens of similar sets (perhaps if Lington actually chose to wander away from one of the melodies, or if he had hired a rhythm section that displayed some personality...). It is no coincidence that all of the selections ...
| | Steve Oliver 3-D CD (2004)
Song For You songs
$14.65 As one reviewer said of the cheerful music and personality of this increasingly popular voice of smooth jazz guitar, it's Disneyland all the time with him. In other words, Positive Energy, the name of his second genre disc, wasn't just a happy marketing tool. And the title of this disc is appropriate, too, because with the co-production help of founding Spyro Gyra keyboardist Tom Schuman, Oliver digs deep into a rich variety of influences for a multifaceted romp through the worlds of pop, jazz, urban/hip-hop, worldbeat, Brazilian, and Latin music. While focusing as always on his classic acoustic guitar and brilliant "vocalese" to convey the lead melodies on the instrumentals, he stretches into edgier blues territory with his lesser-heard ...
| | Boney James Pure CD (2004)
Song For You album
$9.09 Nine albums into his career, Boney James makes a grab for the smooth-jazz crown with PURE, an outing that finds him working with a mix of soul and jazz luminaries. James ups the stakes by taking over the production reins (in addition to co-writing every song). Still front and center with his beloved tenor saxophone, this Grammy-nominated artist shifts to soprano sax for the harmony-soaked Bilal duet "Better with Time" and the silk sheets-and-champagne slow jam "Break of Dawn," featuring up-and-coming Detroit crooner Dwele.
Debi Nova adds her lovely vocals to the beat-driven "Appreciate," a cut that wouldn't sound out of place ...
| | Jeff Kashiwa Peace Of Mind CD (2004)

$12.39 Jeff Kashiwa has a fluent if generic style on soprano, alto, and tenor, which fits perfectly into the "feel good" smooth music that he performs on "Peace of Mind." ...

| | John Coltrane Coltrane Plays The Blues CD (1960) Bonus Tracks; Japan
Song For You music CDs
$35.99 One of THE great jazz quartets of all time: Coltrane (tenor & soprano), McCoy Tyner (piano), the earth-shaking Elvin Jones (drums) and Steve Davis (bass, though 'Trane's band would most often feature Jimmy Garrison and sometimes Reggie Workman), playing a blues-inspired program of originals. This band had an empathy shared by only the best bands in jazz: the Brubeck and Miles ...
