On Radio Latino, Putumayo covers a fair amount of ground touching on radio hits from around the Latin world. The realm of contemporary Latin is, of course, quite wide. Nonetheless, that gives the label a method to explore a pretty good range of styles. Generally, when one thinks of contemporary Latin, they come up with either the lighter end of the spectrum (think Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony) or the edgier alternative rock (think Café Tacuba or los Mocosos). Here, there's a little bit of both, but also a fair amount of all points in between. A larger focus here is the fusion of old and new. Most, if not all of the tracks here include some slick production values. At the same time, most, if not all of the artists play more traditional instruments or stick with some fundamental rhythms and motives from the local styles. A few of the pieces can fall a bit flat, but there are plenty of highlights even so. Fan favorite los Pinguos contribute a very nice track spilling fusion everywhere. Las Orishas have their own brand of modern Latin R&B. Raul Paz has a slightly more traditional, but very sophisticated sound and structure. Even Martin Buscaglia, usually known as a sideman, contributes a funky groove on a cover of an old Trio los Panchos number. A little more focus on one aspect or another of the spectrum might be appreciated for the sake of coherence, but it's hard to argue with the talent on these pieces. ~ Adam Greenberg

| | Country Gentlemen On The Road (And More) CD (1963) And More
Radio Latino album
$13.99 Continuing in their now feverish quest to reissue every single thing Moses Asch ever released on CD, the folks at Smithsonian have pulled from the catalog a true gem, added six more tracks, and given it to listeners to marvel over. The Country Gentlemen were the inspiration for pickers from Norman Blake to Clarence White to Tony Rice and every third-generation member in Del McCoury's band -- not to mention the New Grass Revival and David Grisman. The original album was a compilation of the best moments of two concerts in 1962 and 1963, respectively; the Smithsonian added six tracks from a third concert in 1963 to round out the time and offer a further glimpse into the mysterious, passionate musicality of the band. This is a live document of the band at the beginning of their maturity, with a style already etched in stone. Here is the perfect blending of folk music, country music, and bluegrass, all offered to an American public who was rediscovering its own folk traditions musically. This obviously knocked out a young Bob Dylan who continues to cover the Gentlemen's version of "Handsome Molly." Banjoist Eddie Adcock, guitarist and lead vocalist Charlie Waller, mandolin player John Duffey, and bassist Tom Gray worked through folk songs like a bluegrass band and bluegrass tunes like an old-timey string band full of ballad singers. Their version ...

$12.99 Pure enchantment resonates through every track of this 2001 release. Baaba Maal's fingers dance over the strings of his acoustic guitar, while bass, balafon, calabash, and timbales create a joyful noise, over which Maal's expressive vocals soar. Abandoning the louder pop influence of his previous few albums, MISSING YOU reverts to the gently rollicking acoustic ...
