Al Fin Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Sangre Nueva.... Nueva Generacion was the first song I heard on the radio and it impressed me greatly. Their style of Salsa is refreshing, uplifting, and live--it is definitely "la sangre nueva de la Salsa." It is a must have--get it while it's hot!!!! | | Andy Montanez Salsa Con Reggaeton CD (2006)
Al Fin CD music
$8.45 This longtime salsa favorite -- with the help of a little reinvention -- tops the charts once again with his 2006 record, Salsa con Reggaetón. In an effort to synthesize the old and the new, the classic and the fresh, the Univision label employed the talents of top Latin music producers Ramon B. Sanchez and Sergio George, both of whom need only touch a project for it to turn to gold. Montañez, a veteran of the world famous El Gran Combo, a crown in the Puerto Rican salsa crown, collaborated with some of the island's new breed of recording stars. Reggaeton artists like Daddy Yankee, Cheka, and Voltio are just a few who lend their flow to Montañez's new sound, which he calls "salsatón." The tunes are fun and danceable, a great mixture of thick, live sounds and the block-rockin' sound of the drum machines that give reggaeton its steely spine. Though bringing together a well-seasoned, gray-haired salsa vocalist with raw, contemporary talent may seem like a gamble, it seems to have paid off. Salsa con Reggaetón rose to the Top Five of more than one of Billboard's Latin Music charts. Andy Montañez sounds as strong and artful as he ever did. This is one for the books. ~ Evan C. Gutierrez

| | Jo Stafford Capitol Collectors Series CD (1991)
Al Fin music CDs
$8.75 Recorded between 1943 and 1950. Includes liner notes by Tom Colborn and Bob Furmanek.
Jo Stafford first appeared on the scene as one of Tommy Dorsey's original Pied Pipers. One can already hear her distinctive voice emerging out of the four-part harmony backing the young Sinatra on his classic 1941 version of "Stardust." Stafford soon embarked on her own solo career, signing with Johnny Mercer's new Capitol label, but not before marrying one of Dorsey's arrangers, Paul Weston. Her marriage to Weston began a personal and professional partnership that lasted for over 50 years.
Considered the "father" of mood music, Weston provided a seamless orchestral backing for Stafford's ...

$5.95 As the liner notes point out, the intensity of hammering hair metal cannot be understated, nor can it be denied on Heavy Metal Head-Bangin' Hits. This collection nails all the high points and ignores the Bic ballads that give hair a bad name. Winger's "Seventeen" kick-starts the festivities with ...

| | Art Farmer Homecoming CD (1971) (Import)
Al Fin songs
$13.39 This Art Farmer studio session from 1971 has a slight contemporary flavor to it, due to the addition of conga player James "Mtume" Forman and percussionist Warren Smith, Jr. to a core group of collaborators including Jimmy Heath, Cedar Walton, Sam Jones, and Billy Higgins. Unfortunately, the additional percussionists are too prominent in the mix, greatly distracting from the driving arrangements of Farmer's "Homecoming" and Kenny Dorham's "Blue Bossa" as well as a peppy bossa nova, "Cascavelo." Far better are the quintet tracks, including the laid-back and mellow interpretation of Leonard Bernstein's ballad "Some Other Time," featuring the leader's matchless flügelhorn and Heath's soprano sax, and an upbeat chart of "Here's That Rainy Day." Another annoying problem is the seemingly out of tune piano, though Walton makes the best of a bad instrument. Not an essential album in the vast Farmer discography, but worth acquiring if found at a reasonable price, though it will be difficult. ~ Ken Dryden
First time on CD for the 1971 album by Jazz great Art Farmer featuring two additional bonus tracks recorded live the following year. A homecoming for Art Farmer is beyond the surface implications of the album title. It is veritably a happy musical homecoming for the ears of the Jazz world ...
