Indie rock has plenty of bands specializing in moody, low-key music heavy on dark, delicate atmospheres, but you'd never know it from listening to the debut from Baltimore duo Beach House. That's because instrumentalist Alex Scally and vocalist Victoria Legrand deliver a sound that is wholly fresh and enchanting, even when its references (Nico, Mazzy Star, Cat Power) are apparent. Throughout BEACH HOUSE, swelling organ, lightly brushed drums, and a constellation of processed guitar sounds build a sonic galaxy through which float Legrand's hushed, lovely vocals--creating an effect that is wistful and charming.Uncut (p.93) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Through the simplicity of their languid melodies, Beach House access a portal into pop's truly uncanny nature." Uncut (p.89) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[There is] a rich seam of spooked cinematic ambience running through the duo's retro-pop....There are exquisite moments here that recall Mazzy Star, Nico-era Velvets and even Radiohead." Beach House album
$11.89 This Montreal ensemble's fiery debut is marked by surging guitars, soulful strings, driving drums, brilliant bass lines, and the quavering vocals of married couple Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. The group's song structures careen through a vast territory of musical and personal history, with lyrics warm with memories of childhood neighborhoods and deceased loved ones, resulting in an alternating current of joy and sadness.
Favorably compared to the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and Broken Social Scene, the Arcade Fire's sound seems to come from a lifetime of listening to the Cure, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, and many others--even a dose of soul gets worked into these grand anthems. Chassagne delivers some spellbinding vocals on "Haiti," while the tinkling piano and strings on "Crown of Love" conjure up a heartbroken surfside prom. In 2004, this made many critics' year-end lists, and it's no wonder--the songs on FUNERAL are so packed with unique instrumentation, mesmerizing ...
| | Band Of Horses Everything All The Time CD (2006)
Beach House CD music
$11.65 EVERYTHING ALL THE TIME is the debut release on Sub Pop from Seattle's Band of Horses. Matt Brooke and Ben Bridwell have abandoned the melancholic slow-core of their previous band Carissa's Weird for a brighter, more straightforward indie rock sound with obvious ...
| | Deerhoof Friend Opportunity CD (2007)
Beach House music CDs
$13.49 Although Deerhoof famously covered the seemingly uncoverable Shaggs gem "My Pal Foot Foot" early in their career, their overall vision has more in common with a different group of brilliantly amateurish women: the Raincoats. Now a trio--after the departure of guitarist Chris Cohen--the San Francisco avant-twee stalwarts inherit from the Raincoats not only a childish sweetness and daft charm, but also intricately layered and inspired musicianship. Despite the oddities, Deerhoof are no slouches.
FRIEND OPPORTUNITY continues their string ...
| | Panda Bear Person Pitch CD (2007)
Beach House songs
$11.59 On 2007's PERSONAL PITCH, Animal Collective's Panda Bear (aka Noah Lennox) ambles out on his own once again with an album that includes a number of tracks from his 2005-07 singles and EPs. Influenced in part by married bliss, new fatherhood, and a move to Lisbon, Portugal, this bright, buoyant album was recorded largely with samplers, ...
| | Battles Mirrored CD (2007)
Beach House album
$12.25 If modern day indie music appears to consist of an endless queue of groups that are either bland emo retreads or glitzy disco punkers, it is then that much more refreshing to encounter a band like Battles. With a lineage that consists of some of indie rock's most accomplished musicians, Battles is a veritable neo-prog supergroup, though one that embraces the possibilities of technology used in tandem with instrumental virtuosity.
MIRRORED, the band's debut full-length makes its intent clear from the onset--to ingest 50 years of rock history and regurgitate it as fractilized micro-symphonies. Rhythms bounce whimsically from motorik krautrock beats to glammed up T. Rex shuffles; such ...
| | Beach House Devotion CD (2008)
Beach House CD music
$12.55 Beach House is the musical duo of instrumentalist Alex Scally and vocalist/keyboardist Victoria Legrand. And as their namesake suggests, their music resonates with the kind of languid radiance of a spiritual retreat from the modern world. Building their signature sound from a few spare elements, lo-fi organs, ...
| | Nina Simone Blues CD (1991)
Beach House music CDs
$7.59 Recorded in the late '60s and early '70s, THE BLUES is sprinkled with both covers and originals, capturing Ms. Simone's moving performances of traditional and folk blues standards. With her far-reaching array of emotions conveyed through low, sweet, long notes, it takes the listener on a journey through pain, joy, love, anger, and humor. Here she performs beautiful renditions of songs made popular by, among others, Bob Dylan and Kurt Weill.
On "In the Dark," deeply accenting the harmonica-tinged tune at just the right places, she lustily tells a tale of lovers. Simone's voice carries the listener ...
| | Pogues Peace & Love CD (1989) (Import) England; Netherlands
Beach House songs
$10.05 PEACE & LOVE is reportedly the album that became the work of The Pogues in spite of lead man Shane MacGowan. The singer had a been taken over by addictive bouts with drinking and doing drugs and it was the rest of the bandmates who ended up performing most of the duties for this Irish rock album.
Shane MacGowan's potent appetite for alcohol was evident from the time the Pogues cut their first album, but by the time they got to work on Peace and Love in 1989, it was evident that he'd gone far past the point of enjoying a few pints (or many pints) and had sunk deep into drug and alcohol dependence. The Pogues were always far more than just MacGowan's backing band, but with the group's principal songwriter and lead singer frequently unable to rise to the occasion, the recording of Peace and Love became a trying experience, with the rest of the band often scrambling to take up the slack for their down-for-the-count frontman. Given the circumstances, the Pogues deliver with greater strength than one might expect on Peace and Love; while MacGowan's vocals are often mush-mouthed and his songwriting is markedly beneath his previous standards, Terry Woods contributes two terrific traditional-style numbers ("Young Ned of the Hill" and "Gartloney Rats"), Philip Chevron's "Lorelei" is a superb tale of lost love (he and Darryl Hunt also teamed up for a fine bit of Celtic-calypso fusion on "Blue Heaven"), and Jem Finer brought along a trio of strong originals. Musically, Peace and Love found the band stretching their boundaries, adding accents of film noir jazz on "Gridlock," rockabilly on "Cotton Fields," straight-ahead rock on "USA," ...

$9.49 Review from CD Baby:"What a wonderful sound! Beautiful sax tone, (sweet and smooth as hot butter)...as good as it gets.
