This two-fer CD combines a pair of soul superstar Ben E. King's finest lesser-known albums. SINGS FOR SOULFUL LOVERS (1962) was Atco's attempt to make King the next Bobby Darin, moving his passionate, warm voice into the standards of the Great American Songbook; King is such a natural vocalist and consummate performer that songs like Mancini's "Moon River" and Darin's "Dream Lover" are a perfect fit. The eclectic SEVEN LETTERS (1965), King's equally fine last album for the label, ranges from gripping soul to quirky novelty tunes like "Jamaica," one of the first American attempts to mimic the sound of ska. While not the best place for newcomers to start, this will be of interest to King fans specifically and soul collectors in general.

This 2-fer features the Drifter's lead singer doing a set of standards on 1962's 'Sings for Soulful Lovers' and his much underrated 1965 album 'Seven Letters.'

This CD contains B.B. King's first ABC-Paramount studio efforts -- Mr. Blues (1962) and Confessin' the Blues (1965), respectively. While there are inevitable similarities between the projects, offering them back-to-back allows listeners an acute sense of King's rapid maturation and development during what was by all accounts the nexus of the guitarist/vocalist's career. The dozen-song Mr. Blues was a haphazard start for King with the contents taken from three different recording sessions in a 13-month period (March 1, 1962 through April 11, 1963).
