While Roger McGuinn was always the leader of the band (and its one constant member) it's startling to consider the number of musical giants that passed through the band, including David Crosby, Chris Hillman, Gene Clark, Gram Parsons, and the aforementioned White. The group's originals--from "I"ll Feel A Whole Better" to "Eight Miles High" to "Drug Store Truck Drivin' Man"--cast the Byrds as a brilliant songwriters collective; however, their ability to boldly interpret the work of others (ultimately making it their own) helped bridge the gaps between country, folk, rock & roll, and the Love Generation. The talent, legacy, and sheer beauty of the Byrds music can not be underestimated, and THERE IS A SEASON ensures that won't happen.
This 4 CD/DVD set, personally overseen by Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman, includes 99 audio tracks including 5 unissued tracks. All the key singles and album tracks, as well as pre-Byrds recordings and material unearthed while reissuing the Byrds catalog is included. The DVD includes 10 previously unreleased TV appearances from 1965-1967. Also included are extensive liner notes by Rolling Stone's David Fricke, as well as intros by Tom Petty, Gary Louris (of the Jayhawks), and other admirers.
While 1990's THE BYRDS box set was an excellent representation of the group's illustrious and highly influential career, the 2006 four-CD set, THERE IS A SEASON, is a wonderful replacement. Working chronologically from pre-Byrds bands the Beefeaters and the Jet Set through their groundbreaking folk-rock and country-rock incarnations and culminating with the absolutely smokin' Clarence White era and the mid-'70s reunion line-ups, the collection makes a strong case for the Byrds being perhaps the single most important American rock band.
The Byrds: Gram Parsons (vocals, guitar, keyboards); David Crosby, Roger McGuinn (vocals, guitar); Chris Hillman (mandolin, bass guitar); Kevin Kelly, Michael Clarke (drums).
Rolling Stone (p.79) - 5 stars out of 5 -- "They came up with harmonizing folk rock that sounds like liquid sunshine...[and] they pioneered trippy psychedelic guitar rock..." Spin (p.107) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "They turned their covetous cravings into the genius evidenced on this four-disc box." Q (p.154) - 5 stars out of 5 -- "[T]hey were as influential as The Beatles, the greatest interpreters of Bob Dylan...[and] they invented country rock with Gram Parsons." Uncut (p.126) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[A] kind of highlight reel. Each of the group's 13 albums is represented by key tracks, lost singles are returned to their proper sequence, and soundtrack and live material supplement the story." Mojo (Publisher) (p.116) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "The music was and remains fabulous....The original group had a way of changing the beat around, of holding back then flying free..."

| Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews FANTASTIC! I thought that the first boxed set by the Byrds was great! This one is even better, and contains nine more somgs. The first two discs are the Byrds' at their very best, and includes so many of the tracks that were never released as the "Jet Set." Great stuff! The second two discs are devoted mostly to their country period. I would have included "America's Greatest Pastime" and "Cowgirl in the Sand" in this collection, but they are not here. Only one of their new recordings are here, but the first boxed set has all of those. It is still a must for all fans of the Byrds. My grade "A-". Excellent ! This new Byrds box corrects some glarring omissions of the original 1990 set entitled-The Byrds. There are key Gene Clark tracks such as "Set You Free This Time" and the single version of "She Don't Care About Time" etc. Still, there are some other rarities such as the L.P. Soundtrack version of "Child of The Universe" with orchestration and a live Swedish radio broadcast of"He was a Friend of Mine". There are also two songs from the underrated 1973 reunion L.P. which are great Gene Clark songs! The bonus DVD is alot of fun and you get to see the Byrds transform from Beatle-influenced folk-rockers to psychedelic space-cowboys in front of your very eyes. So especially if you don't have all the remastered CD's,this new, beautifuly packaged box set is a must buy! Submitted by happy (Carbondale,Illinois,USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
An excellent retrospective This box set covers ALL aspects of the Byrd's career, in each of their incarnations. It is kind of hard to say this, but they could have done a better job on it. Sure, the Byrd's had an incredibly prolific, if short, career, but the inclusion of half of an album and complete ignorance of the rest of it deprives the listener of hearing some great stuff, especially on their first six albums, from "Mr. Tambourine Man" to "Sweetheart of the Rodeo". Those who buy this, be warned that to truly listen to all of the group's music, you have to buy the individual albums as well, which is somewhat of a gyp. However, The music, overall, is still excellent, and really details the group's career. This album also shows the cultural impact that the group had, and what creative powerhouses they could be when they put their heads together. Absolutely wonderful, even if I have to shell out more money to hear the rest of the story. Good for the person who wants a comprehensive overview without buying all of the albums. truely amazing!!! Okay... many of you are wondering why there needs to be ANOTHER box-set for the Byrds, but there are two very good reasons- this one is far superior to the previous one in sound quality and in selection of songs. This boxset properly reflects the contributions of Gene Clark and David Crosby which were short changed the first time around. This selection also starts with a handful of songs prior to their first single for Columbia. The running order makes this selection of songs play as one giant musical journey rather than just a random collection of hits, favorites and rarities. I really enjoyed the unearthed live tracks on disk four which showcase Clarence White's awe-inspiring guitar playing. This boxset truely shows off one of America's greatest musical treasures- the Byrds. Submitted by jlcarlee (san mateo, california, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Outside of the Beatles, the most progressive band ever! This new Byrds box set really shows how versatile the band was from 1964 to 1968.In that amazing period they advanced the work of Bob Dylan, created new genres such as Folk-Rock,Psychedelia,Jazz-Rock, and Country-Rock,as well help spearhead the singer-songwriter movement in pop music. Some early Gene Clark songs that were omitted from the first box set such as I Knew I'd Want You and Set You Free This Time are rightfully included in the new set.Overall, There Is A Season is comprehensive but I wish it would have included Change Is Now,Thoughts And Words,or CTA 102 since the stuff they did on Fifth Dimension,Younger Than Yesterday and The Notorious Byrd Brothers was their creative zenith. Also, it would have been nice to have the 1970 Gene Clark single One In A Hundred/She's The Kind Of Girl since it was a reunion of the original five Byrds. The packaging is lavish with a hondred page color book and a bonus DVD. It's fun to watch the video footage of the Byrds performing to screaming girls with go-go dancers in the backgroung. This 99-track collection showcases what a progressive band the band was.
