Personnel: Paul Stanley (vocals, guitar, percussion, background vocals); Paul Stanley; Andreas Carlsson (guitar, background vocals); Greg Kurstin, Zac Rae (piano); Harry "Slick" Sommerdahl (keyboards, bass guitar, programming); Russ Irwin (keyboards); Sean Hurley (bass guitar); John Shanks, C.C. White (background vocals); Corky James, John 5 (guitar); Victor Indrizzo (drums). Recording information: Henson Recording Studios, Hollywood, CA. Photographer: Neil Zlozower. Nearly 30 years after his 1978 self-titled debut, Kiss singer/guitarist Paul Stanley issued his first solo album without his signature "Starchild" make-up, LIVE TO WIN. Featuring contributions from former Kiss member Bruce Kulick (on bass) and guitarist John 5 (Marilyn Manson/Rob Zombie), the record consists largely of mid-tempo hard-rock tunes, most notably the pounding and thematically uplifting title track. Much like Meat Loaf's BAT OUT OF HELL III, released around the same time during 2006, LIVE TO WIN is a fine example of a veteran rocker refusing to rest on vintage material. Despite what some may believe, Live to Win is not Paul Stanley's solo debut. That honor goes to 1978's Paul Stanley (which was released in conjunction with solo releases by the three other Kiss members), an album so Kiss-like that the singer's full-time band could have easily stamped their logo on it and issued it as the studio follow-up to 1977's Love Gun. Nearly 30 years later, Stanley is ready to step out on his own again, and this time around, it's not the arena anthems you'd expect. In its place is a modern-day mainstream pop/rock production, which effectively smoothes out all the rough edges. In fact, the title track would sound perfect sung by an American Idol finalist (or wouldn't be out of place in an episode of Fame), while the ballad "Loving You Without You Now" treads dangerously on Barry Manilow territory. Elsewhere, mainstream pop/rock reins supreme ("All About You," "Wake Up Screaming," "Where Angels Dare," etc.). Despite the fact that much of this material will leave longtime fans of "Detroit Rock City" and "I Stole Your Love" scratching their heads as to where the cojones went, there's no denying that all these years later, Stanley is still in fine voice. A little more grit and much less polish would have certainly helped here. ~ Greg PratoEntertainment Weekly (p.72) - "80s hair-metal-style power ballads like 'Second to None,' co-written with hitmaker Andreas Carlsson, are sleek and catchy..." -- Grade: B- Live To Win Music Review Average Rating: (3.6 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Killer Disk Baby!! Sure this disk may be a little soft or what-not, but when a singer comes out with a solo effort they tend to make music that compliments singing. And this album sure does, he has blossomed from a mediocre singer in the early days of Kiss to one of the great voices of the 21st Century. No one can copy his sound and never will. Buy this disk if you love a good rock vocal performance. Submitted by The Ox (Saskatchewan, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 2 found this helpful.
good work... Paul is obviously one of the talents behind kiss. The other was Ace!! Gene was the one who should have left the band.. hes more into making money than music!!! Ace rocks!!! Submitted by mzap (adelaide , australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The real talent of KISS Ok, this wasn't exactly what I had imagined; before hearing it. He seems to pick up where Carnival of Souls left off. Paul always had that certain way of writing songs that really "sway" and "swing",and this album delivers that. Remember Time Traveler from the box set, if you liked that song, you will like this. The only this I don't like is the "shiny" production editing, these songs will all sound beter live or with less studio overlap. Keep it coming Paul,Simmons cannot write much,Stanley was the real talent behind KISS, he could stand on his own,he only needed Gene for the stage show. Very Good CD simply put not a start to finish perfect cd, but one that can easily be cherry picked of 5-6 good, concert worthy songs. Wake Up Screaming is really good, the ballads (surprise) i don't care for. seeing the title track + Bulletproof live were really cool... Submitted by flaKISSfan (S Florida) Was This Review Helpful? Live To Win
$6.39 The Corrs: Jim Corr (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Sharon Corr (vocals, violin); Andrea Corr (vocals, tin whistle); Caroline Corr (vocals, drums, bodhran, percussion). Recorded at Ardmore Studios in Dublin, Ireland in January 2002. You knew the Corrs had made it when they played the final JFK Awards ceremony of the Clinton administration. Playing it would have been achievement enough, but their status as a happening thing was cemented at the end of the ceremony, during the encores, when everybody was taking their final bows. Bill moseyed up over to Andrea, put his arm around her, and when she was looking away, sized her up -- at precisely the same moment Chuck Berry was checking her out. If that doesn't mean that you've broken America, entering its pop culture, I don't know what does, expect for maybe a VH1-endorsed piece of product like Live in Dublin. Lo and behold, that's exactly what the Corrs received in the spring of 2002, a year and a half after "In Blue" and its accompanying single "Breathless" broke down the doors in America ...
