Guitarist Brian Tarquin and producer Chris Ingram are back with another impressive set of danceable-yet-cerebral breakbeat electronica, and while it's clear that they know better than to mess with a good thing, there are still plenty of fresh and exciting sonic ideas here. Having dipped into the old Bob Marley catalog on Enjoy This Trip with a drastic remix of "Don't Rock My Boat," they do the same thing this time with an even more varied and thrilling deconstruction of "Mr. Brown." Reggae influences lurk beneath the surface throughout most of the album, and jungle/drum'n'bass are central on almost all tracks. But they also expand their palette to include classical elements, such as the repetitively looped strings on "Chariots of Fire," and jazz-funk as well (note the relatively restrained and deliberate funk groove of "L Train"). Hints of Asian exotica rise to the surface as well -- what appears to be a Hindi lyric weaves in and out of the pizzicato strings on "Karma Sutra" -- as well as a taste or two of 1950s sci-fi soundtrack music (note the faux theremin on "Gargoyles"). Any sign that there's still new ground to cover in the tired drum'n'bass genre is welcome, and Asphalt Jungle provide about as compelling a case for that music's ongoing viability as listeners are ever likely to hear. Excellent. ~ Rick Anderson

| | Pink Funhouse CD (2008) Explicit
Junglization
$10.35 Pink's insistently hooky, attitude-filled pop-rock has kept the singer a fixture on the radio and on singles charts since the early 2000s. The artist's fifth effort, FUNHOUSE, doesn't tamper with the formula: Pink's powerhouse vocals and in-your-face approach, backed by stadium-sized production, are in full effect on all 12 tracks. Even though the album deals primarily with aftermath of her divorce and includes serious moments of self-confrontation like "Sober," fans needn't worry that Pink has lost any of her chutzpah.
If anything, there's an increased sense of confidence and newfound liberation on tracks ...

Junglization
$8.89 For the past few decades, Al Jarreau has established himself as a truly modern jazz singer, one for the post-fusion generation--those who grew up with the sounds of the cordial contemporary jazz of George Benson, Spyro Gyra, and Herbie Hancock. CHRISTMAS is Jarreau's first-ever ...
| | Ugk Too Hard To Swallow CD (1992)
Junglization
$8.99 Truth in advertising, Too Hard to Swallow is UGK before they got funked up, grinding over some minimal, hard beats that aren't as complementary to their delivery as the smoother production they would later favor. Still, thanks to members Bun B and Pimp C's ability to write memorable rhymes, the album -- which repeats some tracks from their impossible to find indie release The Southern Way -- is a winner with three mammoth singles so important to the UGK story. "Something Good" puts a crooked beat under Rufus' most popular number, "Use Me Up" tells its pissed-off tale over a Bill Withers sample, and "Pocket Full of Stones" is a classic tale of crack rocks, Cadillacs, and making bail. The mucho macho "Cramping My Style" is a fan favorite with "hump and dump" lyrics that didn't really play nice with ...
