Heart Food soothes the Soul
This second release by Judee Sill is a wonderful showcase of her sound. The original versions of "Soldier of the Heart", "The Phoenix" and "The Vigilante" are superb. I am especially fond of the demo (piano only) version of "Down Where The Valleys are Low". I have been fond of this album since I found an old LP of it in a used record store 16 years ago. The Remastered sound is very good. Buyers beware: Rhino Handmade is the company which released this CD, So supplies are limited. I wish Judee Sill's albums were regularly available. No doubt they would sell very well.

Wonderful album from a talented singer/songwriter
This is a fantastic album and one that you will cherish for as long as you live. There's a timeless quality to many of these songs. If you recollect the name of Judee Sill instantly as I did, then you'll probably remember that marvellous voice from the early seventies as well. Teh songs are a mix of country, west-coast, folk rock and straight pop music and above it all you'll be hearing Judee Sill's - often multitracked - soaring voice. What a delight it is to hear that again. Don't be fooled and reject this CD, thinking that this is Christian rock music which many of the song titles might imply. A more apt term would be spiritual music. "Heart Food" was Sill's 2nd. and, unfortunately, last album. Sadly she died in 1979, as the extensive liner notes will tell you. This limited edition of 5000 copies was remastered from the original source tapes and some 9 demos have been added as bonus tracks. Why Elektra & Rhino have made so few copies available is a big mystery. NOTE: Judee Sill's debut album including live bonus tracks is just as good this collection.

haunting vocals
her initial cd is more sparse; this is has a fuller sound but the vocals is what carries this album. Her voice is simple but unforgetable. I highly recommend this cd.

Food for the heart, mind, and soul
For 30 years, Judee Sill has been one of pop music's forgotten names, a distant memory. But with the new series of lavish Rhino reissues of her work, her legacy is being brought to light. During her lifetime, Judee released only two albums, both for David Geffen's Asylum label, and 'HEART FOOD' is the second, from 1973. The arrangements this time around are fuller and more orchestrated, and the country, roots vibe of the first album, 1971's 'JUDEE SILL,' is here juxtaposed with a more groove-based sound owing more to rock ("Soldier of the Heart") and gospel ("Down Where the Valleys Are Low.") Judee is a proficient guitarist and pianist, and her immense skill as a songwriter and pop composer is evident on all of these songs. The highlights of the original album have to be the sweeping, hymnal "The Kiss," and the astounding "The Donor," an epic 10-minute closer with tempo and mood changes galore, quite unlike any pop music from the time or ever since. The additions here are essential too, with stripped-down acoustic demo versions of most songs, and the previously unreleased outtake "The Desperado," which is the most languid, easygoing song on the record. There are also exceptional liner notes from Michele Kort with original artwork restored alongside new unseen photos. Judee Sill died in obscurity in 1979 after recording one other album, which was finally released in 2005 as 'DREAMS COME TRUE.' The music of this highly original musician needs to be investigated and close attention paid, and then the rewards are hugely satisfying. An essential purchase.
