This Los Angeles-based dynamic Spanish guitar duo has made an incredible career, one brilliant recording after another, of paying homage to the cultures surrounding their countries of origin -- Costa Rica (Jorge Strunz) and Iran (Ardeshir Farah). While the intense intricacy of their dual acoustic vibe and high quality of melodies and production each time out make it hard to call any effort their best ever, Fantaseo is certainly right up there. It all starts with little steps, aka the amiable and increasingly dramatic "Pasitos," which lopes along for a few minutes before longtime violin associate Charlie Bisharat adds his soaring exotic Middle Eastern touch. "Bello Mundo" lives up to its spirited title as the duo gracefully weaves a flamenco-inspired spell through Bisharat's optimistic runs. It's always just a matter of time before the Middle Eastern vibe becomes more pronounced, and the title track -- which features Farah on steel string -- is a joyful entry into that boundless exoticism. After the more laid-back, lushly soundscaped "Southern Seas," Strunz & Farah go a bit smooth jazzier on "Azure," enhancing a gentle, rolling melody with that lightning soloing they're so well known for. The percussion instruments get more exotic (and thus the rhythms grow wilder, global, and more unpredictable) on "Fortuneteller" and "Navayeh Roosta" before the set wraps up nicely on "Luxuriance," on which the duo dares legendary flutist Hubert Laws to keep up note for note with the happy mix of lush melody and hypnotic string rhythms -- needless to say, Laws is up to the task. ~ Jonathan Widran

$13.79 Ottmar Liebert, Jesse Cook, Lara & Reyes -- all have their place in modern flamenco music. But something about these guys sets them apart. Jorge Strunz and Ardeshir Farah are in top form, with their own label, Selva, and a disc that is an easygoing rival for their two Mesa classics and previous, pre-stardom releases. Ten seconds of the opening fireball, "Jardin," ...

Fantaseo CD music
$13.79 Strunz & Farah haven't been much of a critics' favorite, although they have many admirers among great musicians, including the legendary Paco de Lucia. Listening to the guitar duo, it's easy to understand both sides. Both players have incredible technique, with bursts of passion. But at the same time, their new flamenco seems like a watered-down version of "real" flamenco. However, if you take Rio de Colores ...

$12.69 Is it possible for two artists to be on the same label so long that one starts to sound like the other? In the case of Govi, who has been a Higher Octave Music labelmate of Craig Chaquico for years, absolutely -- well at least on "Ruby Lips," the moody, easy-rolling opening track on this disc. It's a nice enough cut, a cool mix of acoustic and slow-burning electric guitars, but it sounds like a mellow outtake from any of Chaquico's recent recordings. Odd, since the German-born Govi -- who spent eight years in India and lives in Hawaii -- usually edges toward ...
| | Marsalis Family: A Jazz Celebration CD (2003)
Fantaseo music CDs
$14.65 Recorded live at Kiefer UNO Lakefront Arena, New Orleans, Louisiana on August 4, 2001. Includes liner notes by Bob Blumenthal.
Barring the 1982 album Fathers and Sons and a brief and legendary pairing during the '80s, the Marsalis' have largely avoided playing together. It is almost as if despite becoming some of the most technically proficient and creative forces in music, appearing together would relegate them to a freakish gimmick or biological fluke and negate all their hard work as individuals. The truth is, though, that the public has always enjoyed and often demanded that the Marsalis clan appear together, and it is an exciting thing musically when they do. Wynton Marsalis' early recordings with his brother, such as Black Codes (From the Underground), are perhaps some of his most revelatory. Before he completely dedicated himself to single-handedly rebuilding the historical foundations of jazz, he was freed-up to investigate Ornette Coleman, late-period John Coltrane, and at least evince some classical notions into his jazz recordings. Perhaps Branford Marsalis benefited most from the eventual breakup with his brother, allowing him ...
