The Chamber Jazz Sextet, an intriguing West Coast cool jazz group from the 1950s, consisted of Dent Hand (on trumpet and bass); altoist Frank Leal; Modesto Briseno on clarinet, tenor, and baritone; Allyn Ferguson on piano and French horn; bassist Fred Dutton doubling on bassoon; and drummer Tom Reynolds. On this 1958 CD reissue, they play jazz versions of songs from the Rodgers & Hart score to the film Pal Joey. The original play had "I Could Write a Book" as its best-known song, but the movie also added some Rodgers & Hart hits from earlier productions, including "There's a Small Hotel," "My Funny Valentine," "The Lady Is a Tramp," and "I Didn't Know What Time It Was." All of those songs plus three others are performed by the Chamber Jazz Sextet in concise, colorful, and swinging versions, arranged by Allyn Ferguson and Bill Holman. Fun music. ~ Scott Yanow
Allyn Ferguson's Chamber Jazz Sextet obviously catered for the listener who appreciated a deft blending of writing and improvising skills. Ferguson scored six of the pieces, calling in Bill Holman to arrange 'Lady is a Tramp' and 'I Could Write A Book.'
Recorded in Hollywood, California on June 3, 1958. Includes liner notes by Alun Morgan.

| | Houston Person Mellow CD (2009)
Chamber Jazz Sextet Plays Pal Joey album
$14.29 Not all mellow, Houston Person's tribute to the softer side of jazz has its moments based on the laid-back timbre of his soul rather than a program consisting of only ballads. The tenor sax he wields certainly reflects the tradition established by Ben Webster in its soul-drenched tone, but is not as vocally pronounced or vibrato-driven. The quite capable pianist John Di Martino is the one whose more enunciated notions are harnessed, while tasteful guitar by the underrated James Chirillo rings out in acceptance of Person's embraceable hues. In a program of standards and two blues jams, Person rounds into shape this quintet of true professionals to render themes that are harder to play slow than fast. The slower material includes the regretful, throaty ballad "Too Late Now," the totally restrained "To Each His Own," a poignant "Two Different Worlds," and the deep, mature take of "God Bless the Child." Ever cognizant of blue moods, Person is masterful in expressing his innermost ...

Chamber Jazz Sextet Plays Pal Joey songs
$14.39 Erin Bode's national recording debut for Maxjazz is an impressive affair. The young singer, who is gifted with a sweet and clear voice, wanted to cover her favorite songs, so here she delves into rock, bluegrass, pop ballads, R&B, and standards from the Great American Songbook, and is backed by a very supportive rhythm section consisting of pianist Bruce Barth, bassist Larry Grenadier, and drummer Montez Coleman. Most of the first five tracks are eye-openers. She confidently opens the CD with a country-flavored original, "Don't Take Your Time," co-written and jointly arranged with Adam Maness, who also plays piano on this track (a bonus CD-Rom video track of a live studio performance of "Don't Take Your Time" is also included). The Beatles' "Here, There and Everywhere" has been performed in a jazz setting before, but Bode is one of a just a few jazz singers to record it, and Barth's imaginative arrangement is a great improvement over the typically overblown charts used elsewhere. She then switches gears to tackle Bill Monroe's mournful bluegrass ballad "In the Pines," multi-tracking a backing vocal in spots, and adding Adam Rogers' delicious acoustic slide guitar and Meg Okura's gritty violin. ...
