In pre-release interviews, Royce da 5'9" laid out a perfect description of his style: a Detroit kid brought up on Nas whose head was sent spinning once Eminem came around. Three years in the making--twelve months in prison for a DUI being part of the problem--STREET HOP often has a solid foundation that's absolutely classic in feel but also features those quirky, sick-o rhymes that are distinctly post-Shady. "I mix a between Chris Brown and Chris Jericho/Where's your daughter?" is an unsettling bit from the freaky track "Street Hop 2010" which goes on to reference Marlon Brando's Apache friend picking up his Oscar right before rattling off some psycho-babble about "syphilis nun chucks" and other bizarre whatnot. Dutch reissue label Disky has produced one of those head-scratching compilations in its Spandau Ballet album The Collection. Fourteen tracks making up almost an hour of music run the gamut from major British hits like "To Cut a Long Story Short" and "Lifeline" to live versions of "Gold" and "Foundation" and remixes of "Coffee Club" and "Highly Strung" (retitled "Highly Re-strung"). But there is no discernible selection criterion to this group of tracks drawn from the band's 1980-1984 recordings for Chrysalis Records. It's not really a hits collection, since it leaves so many hits out (and potential American purchasers should be warned that none of Spandau Ballet's U.S. chart entries, not even "True," are included). It's not a rarities collection. If there is any organizing principle, it seems to be danceability, since, at least until near the end, all of the tracks maintain a steady beat. But this is a seemingly random collection of Spandau Ballet performances, including various singles, LP tracks, live recordings, and remixes in no particular order. Some of the band's better material is here, some isn't. This two-fer combines two early-'60s Acuff LPs, Once More It's Roy Acuff and King of Country Music (also sometimes known as All Time Greatest Hits), onto one CD. Once More It's Roy Acuff was his first album for the Hickory label and was, as was often customary at the time, not so much a deliberately assembled full-length project as a collection of singles. It gathered the A-sides and B-sides of six singles he issued on Hickory between 1957 and 1960, none of them bearing the influence of rockabilly or the onset of the increasingly smooth and sophisticated Nashville production of the late '50s. It's to-the-bone hillbilly music, fiddle aboard and drums absent, though the Smoky Mountain Boys play with energetic fullness, and Acuff's lead singing is bolstered by plenty of strong backup harmonies. In addition to several of Acuff's own compositions, the selections included covers of tunes by first-rate writers like Don Gibson and the Louvin Brothers.
