| | G-Notes Inthrumental CD G-Notes Discography of CDs
Instrumental hip-hop with an international palette, Gnotes' Inthrumental celebrates the blurry line that separates electronic and organic music. 'Technics in the backseat, guitars in the trunk,' explains Gnotes, aka Sean Dwyer, on the joyous opening track. Inthrumental pushes even further the expanding evolution of hip-hop by weaving together a tapestry of diverse sounds into a single living, breathing album. Boom-bap breakbeats provide the foundation for Dwyer's soulful guitar slides and Afro DZ ak's live trumpet solos, while interspliced vocal samples allow Gnotes to speak his mind even without his mic. Rather than just layering samples over his beats, Dwyer invited fellow Boston musicians to jam over the skeleton of what would eventually become Instrumental. The result is a bold exploration of the musical possibilities of international hip-hop, with its roots in Brazilian baile funk, Southern blues, British grime, West Coast G-funk, and true-school Afro-Cuban jazz, as if DJ Shadow produced Beck's forthcoming album and invited Ry Cooder and Miles Davis to jam along One of the best tracks, 'Gift of Prophecy,' is a sultry love song with a hypnotic acoustic guitar and regal trumpets in the distance. 'Beautiful Story' features a graceful extended trumpet solo from Afro DZ ak of the Eclectic Collective, while rapper Kabir lends some la-di-da to 'A Cloudy Day in Cambridge. ' The final track, 'PreGnotes,' features bits of Dwyer's music from before Inthrumental, working backwards from the present to his singer-songwriter days playing acoustic guitar with Ryan Read. Not only does each individual track grow and move with musical dynamism, but the entire album itself seems to be a living creature with purpose and direction. Despite some delightful detours along the way, Inthrumental avoids losing listeners' attention by constantly moving in exciting and unexpected musical directions. Inthrumental CD music
$13.29 Released without the usual flurry of hype, Before I Self Destruct fulfills 50 Cent's contractual obligation to the Interscope label. It also doubles as a throwback album, returning the rapper to the hunger and hatred of his early mixtapes while skillfully recasting him as a wannabe upstart. That is, for the most part. The four radio-friendly bedroom numbers that conclude the album are out of place but fairly good to dime-piece beautiful, with the best being the Ne-Yo showcase "Baby by Me" ("Have a baby by me, baby/Be a millionaire"). As pleasing as these final numbers are, if you ...

The first double-CD of original material by a rap artist, ALL EYEZ ON ME marks 2Pac's return from incarceration to the recording grind. And though Tupac Shakur may have spent the better part of 1995 locked up and battling the system, the album makes it obvious that, rather than degenerating his artistic ...
| | King Koop Early Years CD (2001)
Inthrumental music CDs
$29.59 The Early Years is a retrospective into the life and times of a session guitarist, songwriter and producer. In this collection of cherry-picked King Koop favorites and never-before released recordings, what is most apparent is that this compilation delivers. The Early Years sounds like the format of a radio station specializing in hip R&B and rare blues. The first song, "You Can Call Me," features vocalist Gloria Davis in this haunting knock-out of a tune that rises to even greater heights with featured saxophonist Ron Stallings (currently with Huey Lewis) take-no-prisoner solo. Also featured (on tracks 1 and 2) are Kincade Miller on keyboards, Jeff Myer on drums, Bobby Love on bass and King Koop on all guitars. The Beatles-sounding "In Love" is the second cut to come out of the aforementioned session dates (circa 1990) and it is a dandy. Here Gloria Davis' angelic sounding voice tells a tale of love-at-first-sight while soulfully making her point in the vamp. One can see why DMX may have borrowed from the third track, "Woman Why You Worry." Most likely written and recorded (circa 1970) before the rapper was born, this 6/4 cut rocks with vocalist Bobby Love's Billy Ocean-like voice and Bianca Thornton's (Lady Bianca) mesmerizing back-up vocals. Here, we are introduced to King Koop's innovative electric lead guitar work and Electric Flag-ish horn arrangement. Also featured are Steve Schuster on saxophone, Paul Jones on trumpet, Tom Wyman on drums, Ollie Ignacio on bass and Pete Escovedo, the great ambassador of percussion, on congos. Vocalist Jim Stewart sings his heart out in the Otis Redding inspired, "Laughing with My Woman" (circa 1973). With the R&B laced horn arrangement by Ron Stallings and company, this lovely tune will take you back to songs like "When a Man Loves a Woman" or "Try a Little Tenderness." Also featured are Dave Kesner on piano, Tom Dollinger on drums, Stu Feldman on bass and King Koop on electric guitar. Originally written for Tavares, "Hurry" (circa 1978) confirms to the ...

$12.09 England's first documented rapper(Black Echoes Magazine 1980). Winner of the Long Beach City College Slam, the Los Feliz Bourgois Pig Slam and the Safehouse Culver City Slam.I started rapping in January of 1980. Eighteen of my rap years have been spent in America. I was born in England but I am of Jamaican parentage. The biggest thing I've done in America to date is taking part in the Axis of Justice Benefit Concert at the Avalon in July of 2004. I shared the stage with Serj Tankian, Tom Morello, Flea, Pete Yorn, Ahmed Ahmed, Brad Wilkes, Maynard James Keenan and Jurassic 5. The concert raised $30,000 for the LA Regional Food Banks. For the last few years I've been heavily into raising awareness of the Armenian genocide, the first major genocide of the 20th century. I got into poetry fourteen years ago but did it on a consistent basis only about six years ago. I prefer slam poetry to rap battles. I consider slam poets to be verbal gladiators. Ranking poets to the decimal point is harsher than rap battles judging by applause. Currently fleshing out an idea for a theater piece called 'Slamalot'. The title pays homage to Monty Python's 'Spamalot'. If any backers are interested contact me at:myspace /knowledgethewordsmith'The Exorcist' was my original rap name. A policeman made a racist slur to my dad and that helped give rise to the rap 'Justice'. I wrote it two years before the Rodney King beatdown. 'Zulu Nation', 'Poet's Delight' and 'Rap Whore' all illustrate my preference for old school hiphop because I've been in the game a long time. These tracks are meant to remind people of when hiphop was about partying and having fun. 'It all ends now' is my longest ever battle rhyme and 'I thought it had all ended' is the sequel. 'It all ends now' is six minutes long and six minutes strong. I believe it's the longest ever battle rap and the harshest. Not a single swear word in it. If you can scare your opponent in a rap battle without swearing then I believe that makes you more skillful. Just like a comedian exhibiting greater skill if he can make you laugh without resorting to swearing. Bill Cosby is a great example. Jerry Seinfeld too. 'Poet's Delight' ...
