Many figured that the last they heard from Winger was 1993's coolly received Pull, as the group splintered shortly after the album's release in the face of grunge's brief reign and Beavis & Butthead deeming the group un-hip. But with just about every '80s band reuniting in the much more hair metal-friendly climate of the early 21st century, it was only a matter of time until the Winger gentlemen reappeared. And in 2006, three-fourths of the original Winger lineup returned, with the appropriately titled IV. Although original keyboardist/guitarist Paul Taylor is nowhere to be found, Winger's other main three -- singer/bassist Kip Winger, guitarist Reb Beach, and drummer Rod Morgenstein have all reclaimed their rightful positions. Instead of trying to completely overhaul the Winger sound for the 21st century, the lads stick closely to the expected Winger musical template, which switches between heavy rockers (the album-opening "Right Up Ahead"), pop with a melodic yet-hard edge ("Four Leaf Clover"), and the obligatory power ballad ("On a Day Like Today"). The only difference between Winger 2006 and Winger 1988 is that the subject matter is more current events-based, as evidenced by such tracks as "M16." Still, if you liked Winger before, there's no reason why you won't like them on IV. [The CD was also released with a bonus track.] ~ Greg Prato

| | Europe Secret Society CD (2006)
IV
$15.89 When you think of '80s pop/prog-rockers Europe, arena-worthy singalongs (à la "The Final Countdown"), and tear-inducing power ballads (à la "Carrie") immediately come to mind. But with the group's 2006 effort, Secret Society (their second since reuniting in the early 21st century), Europe has endured a total musical makeover. In place of their once glossy pop production is a much more heavy sound, while the once overtly ...
| | Rush Snakes & Arrows CD (2007)
IV
$11.25 In the five years since their last full studio album, a covers EP (2004's FEEDBACK) and two live releases (2003's RUSH IN RIO and 2005's R30) hardly sated the throngs of Rush fans hungry for new music. SNAKES & ARROWS is all they could have possibly hoped for and dreamed about. The brash, contemporary vibe of 2002's VAPOR TRAILS has been shed as the trio returns to the polished production and complex arrangements of their most beloved works.
Woven into the later-era Rush song stylings are no less than three instrumentals: "The Main Monkey Business" (a hard rocking full-band workout), "Hope" (a solo acoustic guitar piece written and performed by Alex Lifeson), and the humorously titled "Malignant Narcissism" (featuring ...

$6.45 The 100 means this is Dischord's 100th release. Teen Idles, label co-owner Ian MacKaye (later of Fugazi) and Jeff Nelson's band before Minor Threat, released the first Dischord single in 1980. So this EP is fitting. It's culled from their first ...

| | Dizzy Gillespie Dizzy: The Music Of John Birks Gillespie CD (2005)
IV
$9.89 Over its 11 tracks, DIZZY spans the range of Gillespie's projects during the era. His explosive 1956-57 big band (which Gillespie considered the greatest big band he ever led) is represented here, as are some of his all-star configurations, which feature Parker, Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins, Stan Getz, and Max Roach. The set presents ballads, potent bebop, and--of particular note--an increasing devotion to Afro-Cuban sounds, a style Gillespie helped develop and introduce to American jazz audiences. DIZZY is a superb overview of a too-often overlooked period in this jazz icon's career.
DIZZY: THE MUSIC OF JOHN BIRKS GILLESPIE is the musical companion to Donald L. Maggin's biography of the bebop pioneer. Interestingly, the CD does not cover what is widely regarded as Gillespie's most enduring and revolutionary work--his earliest recordings with Charlie Parker. Instead, it focuses on his output from 1950 through 1963, when the trumpeter began to experiment with big bands, as well as a variety of small groups. Since Gillespie's work with Parker has been well documented and much heralded, it is a relief to hear a set that spotlights his bold, often magnificent work as a leader.
Personnel: Dizzy Gillespie (trumpet); Herb Ellis ...
