The veteran British singer-songwriter Chris Rea was beginning his third decade in the music business when he released what was to become his best-known and most successful album, THE ROAD TO HELL. Rea suffered the misfortune of starting his professional music career at around the same time as Britain first embraced punk rock, and his tasteful, R&B-inspired songs were initially better received in Europe than in his home country.
THE ROAD TO HELL, released in 1991, centered on Rea's portrayal of a modern world spinning out of control, and stuck close to its narrative throughout, providing a cohesive and musically varied dissection of an increasingly dehumanized society with tracks like the shimmering "Texas," the fiery "You Must Be Evil," and the album's title track, which became one of Rea's biggest-selling records. The spare bass, drums, and guitar instrumentation effectively frames Rea's rough-hewn voice, while his stinging, bluesy guitar playing punctuates his often acerbic lyrics with a biting musical commentary.
For a man who has enjoyed the many highs of success (he has sold over 25 million albums) and suffered too many lows (of ill health) over his illustrious career, "The Road To Hell and Back Again" is apt to say the least. With a body of work that most artists can only dream of (his 11 CD "Blues Guitar" box set sold an amazing 50,000 copies!) and a tour history that is second to none, it's surprising that this is Rea's set of hits performed live. From his farewell tour of 2005, the set includes his biggest international hit "Fool (If You Think It's Over)", "The Road To Hell", "Josephine", "Let's Dance", "Julia" and "Stainsby Girls", as well as Jazee Blue" and "Stony Road", some of Rea's first rate, genuine blues.

Road To Hell & Back CD music
$38.05 The meat of the order here is definitely the first disc, TRAVELING WILBURYS, VOL. 1, a certified masterpiece with five legends at the top of their game. Roy Orbison's "You're Not Alone Anymore" may be his finest performance since the '60s; George Harrison's "Handle With Care" is as good as any solo Beatle hit; and Tom Petty's "Last Night" shows why he belongs rubbing shoulders with Orbison, a Beatle, and Dylan. Disc 2 features their follow-up record, TRAVELING WILBURYS, VOL. 3, and while it still holds up, the material is not quite as strong as on VOL. 1 (sadly, Roy Orbison, for one thing, had passed away by this point). There are still some gems, though, mostly from Petty: the country stomp "Poor House," the longing "New Blue Moon," and the playful "Inside Out." Disc 3 is a DVD featuring ...

Road To Hell & Back album
$8.79 This two-fer CD reissue combines the contents of a couple of 1952 LPs prominently featuring Jane Froman. With a Song in My Heart was a Froman bio-pic starring Susan Hayward that was one of the more successful films of the year. Froman's life story, which turned on her survival of an airplane crash when she was going to Europe to entertain the troops during World War II and her struggle to recover afterwards, made for an emotional film, and the soundtrack album consisted of her recordings of period songs including "I'll Walk Alone," "They're Either Too Young or Too Old," and a patriotic medley. None of Alfred Newman's Oscar-winning score was included, and as such, the album is basically a Froman best-of. Its association with the film, however, assured it of success, and it topped the Billboard charts for a remarkable 25 weeks. The same year, Froman stepped into the cast recording for a Broadway revival of Pal Joey because Vivienne Segal, star of the original production and the revival, ...

$12.15 The world can always use one more weirdo pop artist, even if her weirdness occasionally dissolves into ironic postmodern hipsterism (or did you think the Bob Seger reference was accidental?). Like most attitudes, ironic postmodern hipsterism goes down easily if it's couched in hooks, and while Papineau is way too grad-school to offer them without ...

Road To Hell & Back album

Michael drives his grassroots faith home in this first album with compelling lyrics, fresh arrangements, and rich sonic texture.Michael reveals a sensitivity unusual in today's Christian music scene. The title of this album rightly is named "Loved" because its whole purpose is to bring focus and honor to God alone. Loved intends to bring its listener to heartfelt praise, and perhaps relent the sometimes cold heart that can callus one's life and faith. As one sits back for a listen, Michael's sensitive lyrics and comforting music overwhelm with both peace and joy. Loved, colorful in its imagery and ...
