Evolution
$10.39 The shows comprising LIVE! AT THE LONDON PALLADIUM were Marvin Gaye's first London concerts in a decade due to his fear of flying. This overseas layoff did nothing to douse Gaye's magical live presence as he performed a set of songs spanning his career. On LIVE! the debonaire singer charms the audience and peppers the early part of this set with some of his more sensual material including "Since I Had You," "Come Get To This" and "Let's Get It On."

| | Sheryl Crow CD (1996)
Evolution
$12.59 "If It Makes You Happy" won a 1997 Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.
"Everyday Is A Winding Road" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy for Record Of The Year.
Since crashing the gates with 1993's TUESDAY NIGHT MUSIC CLUB, Sheryl Crow's brand of melodic pop has won her some Grammys and kept her constantly on the road. On the followup album, the one-time background singer retains her sweet delivery laced with gruff edges, while painting her sunny sound with darker shadings. Quirky characters and situations continue to inhabit Crow's songs, whether it's holy rollers and government conspirators ("Maybe Angels") or a homeless evangelist proselytizing outside a supermarket ("Hard To Make A Stand").
While Crow could easily content herself by writing about assorted oddballs, real-life manifests itself assuredly ...
| | Don Henley I Can't Stand Still CD (1982)
Evolution
$6.85 Don Henley's first solo album may still have had the ghost of the Eagles lingering in the corners, but for the most part it showcases his stalwart partnership with producer and songwriter Danny Kortchmar. Lyrically, Henley's songs are a tad weak, but for an inaugural album from a man who had spent most of his career surrounded by multi-talented musicians and writers, on the whole it fairs quite well. His material deals with the hardships of love, the fickleness of the media, and the declining state of education, all induced with a friendly pop sound. The title track, a trouble-in-paradise love song, has Henley pouring his heart out with sugary angst, ...

| | Alan Parsons I Robot CD (1977) Bonus Tracks
Evolution
$6.75 Alan Parsons delivered a detailed blueprint for his Project on their 1975 debut, Tales of Mystery and Imagination, but it was on its 1977 follow-up, I Robot, that the outfit reached its true potential. Borrowing not just its title but concept from Isaac Asimov's classic sci-fi Robot trilogy, this album explores many of the philosophies regarding artificial intelligence -- will it overtake man, what does it mean to be man, what responsibilities do mechanical beings have to their creators, and so on and so forth -- with enough knotty intelligence to make it a seminal text of late-'70s geeks, and while it is also true that appreciating I Robot does require a love of either sci-fi or art rock, it is also true that sci-fi art rock never came any better than this. Compare it to Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds, released ...

| | Lisa Stansfield Face Up CD (2001) (Import) Bonus Track; Japan
Evolution
$38.09 This is the Japanese import editon of Lisa Stansfield's FACE UP including a bonus recording.
Face Up is Lisa Stansfield's first offering for the new millennium, and on this disc she treads similar waters as on previous albums, except for a few more adventurous outings. The album's first single, "Let's Just Call It Love," incorporates the British garage 2step beats introduced to Americans and popularized earlier in 2001 by fellow Brit Craig David, and makes for an unusual but interesting leadoff single. The album's opener, "I've Got Something Better," is classic, funky Lisa Stansfield at her best, and the song gets more and more fun with each repeated listening. Other standouts include the Burt Bacharach-ish show-stopping ballad "How Could You?," the pleading "Don't Leave Now I'm in Love," and the set's most obvious hit, the breezy, disco-laced anthem "8-3-1." The title track is the album's requisite Barry White tribute, and the album's irresistibly ...
| | Blam Caveat Emptor CD (2004)
Evolution
$9.95 Just over a year after they released their self-titled debut album, the Blam returned with Caveat Emptor, an album so different from its predecessor that it could make listeners wonder which sound truly is the Blam's. Gone, for the most part, is the peppy, slightly punky power pop of The Blam; in its place is a dreamy, often breezy sound that often suggests a more energetic version of Luna's style. Singer Jerry Adler's soft, slightly detached vocals sound a bit like Dean Wareham or the Church's Steve Kilbey, and the album's often spare, jangly arrangements strengthen comparisons to those bands. When Caveat Emptor does rock out, ...

| | Little Louie Vega For The Love Of King Street CDs (2007)
Evolution
$14.35 A two-disc, 130-minute DJ mix of house music is a daunting prospect for anyone who intends to listen rather than to dance for two hours, so one important measure of a house DJ's skill is his or her ability to make the experience something less than an interminable exercise in thumping, head-numbing boredom. Louie Vega is better equipped than most to do just that, and if this collection doesn't entirely succeed as a listening experience it's probably more because of the limitations intrinsic to the genre than it is to his own skill. And, it's worth pointing out, this isn't really music for listening anyway. So don't be too surprised or dismayed when the overlong remix of Kerri Chandler's "So Let the Wind Come" fails to keep hold of your attention, or when Groove Box's "Casio's Theme" starts to grate. Less excusable are the off-key singing on Peven Everett's minimalist "I Can't Believe I Loved Her (Calypso Mix)" and Charles McDougald's dumb, overwrought vocals on Bassmental's "It's ...
