Personnel: Sarah McLachlan (vocals); Diana Krall. Sarah McLachlan's WINTERSONG is a holiday album, yet it eschews the sprightly, sparkly feel of most seasonal releases. Instead, McLachlan sticks to the moody, adult contemporary folk sound for which she's known, bringing a reflective, occasionally melancholy atmosphere to a range of popular and traditional Christmas favorites. McLachlan's choice of covers is especially enjoyable; between her personal takes on "Greensleeves" and "Silent Night," she wedges emotive readings of songs by Gordon Lightfoot ("Song for a Winter's Night"), John Lennon ("Happy X-Man (War is Over)"), and Joni Mitchell ("River"). The blend of acoustic guitar, swelling synths, and the singer's wistful voice make WINTERSONG an appealing alternative to the usual holiday fare. Because no artist's career is truly complete without a holiday album, Sarah McLachlan took yet another step toward establishing her place in sentimental adult contemporary radio history with Wintersong. For the most part, the singer chooses the darker, more melancholic, and "wintry" pieces to cover (there's no "Joy to the World" or "Angels We Have Heard on High," for example), focusing as much on the Christmas season and the general feel of the holiday as on its religious connotations. She brings together the folk spiritual "Mary Mary" -- also called "Virgin Mary" when covered by Joan Baez on her 1966 Noël or "Mary What You Gonna Call That Pretty Little Baby" when a black gospel song -- and the traditional "The First Noel," showing off not only her own impressive range but her ability to adapt to different vocal styles while still remaining wholly herself. Her version of Gordon Lightfoot's "Song for a Winter's Night," which was originally released on the 1994 Miracle on 34th Street soundtrack (and then on McLachlan's Rarities, B-Sides & Other Stuff), is pretty and sweet, using as acoustic guitar as well as layers and layers of vocal harmonies to create a sense of space and warmth, and her cover of Joni Mitchell's "River" is lovely, too, using a guitar and arpeggiated synths to push the song sadly along. The synths, in fact, are used frequently on Wintersong, sometimes in their string form on "O Little Town of Bethlehem" or "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," which works nicely, but more often as slightly new agey background effects that get a little tedious, especially considering the fact McLachlan has always been able to carry herself on more organic instrumentation, and sound good doing it, too. She does manage to just stick to only the sad, reflective piano chords on which she has earned her living -- nice in their simplicity -- on the title track, the one original song on the album, which sounds a lot, both thematically and musically, like "River," using Christmas as a way to contemplate a lover ("And this is how I see you/In the snow on Christmas morning..../Oh I miss you now, my love, merry Christmas," she sings). McLachlan's voice sounds great, and her interpretations stick pretty close to the originals while still expressing her own artistic individuality (with the exception of "What Child Is This [Greensleeves]," in which she goes too far, taking liberties with the melody and changing the song too much); but in making everything so soft and ethereal, instead of increasing their poignancy (which is certainly a goal of hers), she kills some of the songs' immediacy and power, unfortunately rendering Wintersong a little lifeless, albeit soothing, at the end. ~ Marisa BrownEntertainment Weekly (p.85) - "WINTERSONG fully indulges McLachlan's melancholia....Gorgeously heartsick..." -- Grade: B+ Sarah McLachlan Wintersong Songs Wintersong Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Thanks Sarah!!! Sarah in all her glory. Her voice expresses Christmas so well. A well rounded song list and instrumentation makes for a warm journey into the snowy solstice season. A special favorite of mine is "The First Noel", amidst sounds of the Holy City I can see her (the Snow Goddess she is) watching over the birth of Jesus Christ. The best Christmas record ever! I honestly think this is the best
record Sarah has made since Fumbling.
Really! I know that's a big call
seeing there's only one original song
on here but what she does with the
traditional Christmas songs is truly
amazing. From the Persian string
arrangements of the First Noel/Mary Mary to the Vienna Strings of O Little
Town Of Bethlehem, this album is original and beautiful. PS: The version of Silent Night is probably the
most gorgeous cover I've ever heard of
that carol. Bravo Sarah! Submitted by Wayne (North Queensland, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.

sarah's holiday classic a spiritual journey Being a fan of sarah and hearing "river" for the first time while shopping in NYC, i was immediately enthralled and had to hear more. What i got was the most inspirational set of songs i have heard this year! "wintersong" itself is moving to the point of tears! Every song stands on its own and can be listened to long after the holidays pass! Submitted by davetoga33 (Saratoga springs, ny usa) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Wintersong
$8.75 Trying to describe what I do is difficult, but the music itself is easy to understand so I recommend heading there next (or first.) The songs I write are for getting in touch with feelings, making sense of life, and getting through tough or confusing situations. My music is my life, it's the things inside my head and heart. I have been writing music and songs for some time now; since the seventh grade, in fact. I had piano lessons for a while when I was little, but I really depend on sound (not ...
| | Moody Blues December CD (2003)
Wintersong
$7.85 New Studio Album Feat.New & Mostly Christmas Songs.
The Moody Blues includes: Justin Heyward, John Lodge. Recorded in Italy. One must give the Moody Blues credit for tenacity and a single-pointed focus. For 37 years they've put forth a startlingly consistent series of themes: optimism, a kind of blind-faith spirituality that the universe is in good hands and that people are by and large decent and kind, and love songs that can be a bit twee, but nonetheless connect when one is in the emotional space to hear them. Their music has always been intimate and pretentious in the best sense of the ...

Wintersong
$16.45 Dwight Piper was born and raised in the enchanting South-eastern village of La Plaine, Dominica May 8, 1978. His early days were spent in the La Plaine Pentecostal church where he developed a love for God and the singing ministry. Even as little boy, Dwight preached to trees and sang with the birds and flowers. It was as though Dwight’s melodious and captivating voice would draw the attention of any living thing that heard it. His talented hands were used to create drums out of tin and plastic cans. Individuals marveled at the passion and fervor of the young, vibrant rising star. His life was molded to pattern that of his Creator, Jesus Christ, from the countless Sundays spent in Sunday school. It was there that his love for God was birthed. At high school he received introductory training in the use of musical instruments such as the drums and flute. Driven by the call of God on his life and his deep love and passion for the music ministry, at age thirteen, Dwight was one of the founding members of a gospel youth band, Survivors, at his local church. A songwriter, a lead vocalist, as well as a drummer, Dwight found his niche in the Survivors. Destined to achieve higher heights in Christ, he later became part of another gospel youth band, the New Creatures. This group embraced Dwight’s songwriting skills, as well as his percussion talent. Musical choruses prevailed wherever Dwight was present and although his music ministry appeared to be off the ground, God had greater plans for him. Thus, at age nineteen he migrated to the United States of America. Undaunted by his new home, Dwight’s dream was even more alive in his heart. Therefore, four years later, in 2002, Dwight released his debut album, Solid Rock. A man after God's own heart, Dwight realized that in order to be successful in life, Christ had to be his solid rock. Through the unwavering efforts and support of his African producer, Joe Mens, this album was able to infiltrate North America, Europe, West Africa, and the Caribbean, including the French West Indies. In 2004, Dwight traveled to England, where he met with a producer of Jet Star (Gospel Times) record label, Tony Richard (Tony Rich). There he received professional training on the reggae music form. The birth of Solid Rock brought him many opportunities to perform in a number of nationwide events. Consequently, in 2004, he received an award for outstanding performance at the Gospel Fest USA 2004 in Massachusetts, New York, and New Jersey. In addition, in 2005, Dwight emerged ...
