A sleek, stylish fusion of Stonesy rock & roll, new wave pop, and pure punk aggression, Pretenders is teeming with sharp hooks and a viciously cool attitude. Although Chrissie Hynde establishes herself as a forceful and distinctively feminine songwriter, the record isn't a singer/songwriter's tour de force -- it's a rock & roll album, powered by a unique and aggressive band. Guitarist James Honeyman-Scott never plays conventional riffs or leads, and his phased, treated guitar gives new dimension to the pounding rhythms of "Precious," "Tattooed Love Boys," "Up the Neck," and "The Wait," as well as the more measured pop of "Kid," "Brass in Pocket," and "Mystery Achievement." He provides the perfect backing for Hynde and her tough, sexy swagger. Hynde doesn't fit into any conventional female rock stereotype, and neither do her songs, alternately displaying a steely exterior or a disarming emotional vulnerability. It's a deep, rewarding record, whose primary virtue is its sheer energy. Pretenders moves faster and harder than most rock records, delivering an endless series of melodies, hooks, and infectious rhythms in its 12 songs. Few albums, let alone debuts, are ever this astonishingly addictive. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Former rock critic Chrissie Hynde launched the Pretenders with an engaging, yet passive, version of the Kinks' "Stop Your Sobbing." She unveiled her own persona fully on The Pretenders, which contains a series of excellent compositions marked by her sensual vocals and brilliant sense of dynamics. An understanding of pop's structures allowed Hynde to exploit them to her own ends while sympathetic support, particularly that of guitarist James Honeyman-Scott, used the excitement of rock without reference to its cliches. Tough and opinionated, Chrissie Hynde's first declaration of independence established the formula she proceeded to follow. The Pretenders' debut album received a much-deserved upgrade in the fall of 2006, as Rhino reissued it as a double-disc set containing a remastered version of the original album on the first disc and a wealth of rarities on the second. Of the 16 tracks, 11 are previously unreleased, but the five previously released cuts are relatively rare, including "Cuban Slide" and "Porcelain," the two excellent non-LP cuts from the 1981 EP Extended Play that didn't surface on CD until the 2006 box Pirate Radio. They're highlights here too, particularly for fans of the first lineup of the Pretenders who didn't want to invest in the big box, but this entire second disc is extremely worthwhile, a worthy supplement to one of the greatest rock & roll albums ever made. Not that it is always as confident and assured as the finished album; it's often rough, particularly on the demos, such as "Stop Your Sobbing," which isn't as full as the studio version, or on the demo of "Brass in Pocket," which reveals thatRolling Stone (10/31/02, p.136) - Ranked # 12 in Rolling Stone's "Women in Rock: The 50 Essential Albums" Rolling Stone - Ranked # 20 in Rolling Stone's "100 Best Albums Of The Eighties" survey (November 1989). Rolling Stone (p.113) - 5 stars out of 5 - "PRETENDERS stands as a stunning confluence of hooks, sonics and substance - it's one of those rare albums on which every move turns out to be the right one." Alternative Press (7/01, p.96) - Included in AP's "10 Essential Women's Rock Albums" - "...An absolute classic album...a set of tough, distinctive pop songs..." | Pretenders Music Review Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) Terrific remastering & tunes all TERRIBLY packaged! OK, I would give the music 10 stars if I could. The remastering is top notch as is the bonus material. The tunes are all wonderful. The packaging however, is awful, so that's why it gets 3 stars from me. It's a cheap tri-fold cardboard layout and the discs are not secure inside their little sleeves. I expect better packaging from Rhino. How about a double-slimline case for the next Pretenders remasters? Even a mini LP layout would be decent if done right. You can do better, Rhino Records! As Good As It Gets This is a masterpiece of an rock album. Every song is amazing. They had the distinction of being a better band live than on record, amazing as that sounds, given the brilliance of this record. Long live the original line-up of The Prentenders! Long live Chrissie Hynde and her vision! Submitted by Al Gomes (Providence, RI, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Outstanding Debut Album I have to confess, I got to this CD late (about 3 years after release). The music is terrific rock 'n roll; if you have any doubts, fire up "The Wait," it's clanking, cacaphonous chords inspire...well, alliteration, and will make your feet move by themselves. Disappointed (like me) by the original CD release? This remaster will make you forget the tepid production of that one; then there's the bonus material which makes it a "new" favorite of mine. Do yourself a favor, and buy one of the great debut albums of all time. Submitted by racewaybob (indy) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 1 found this helpful.
Greatest singer This is still the greatest band and the greatest singer that actually sounds better as they age. Buy the remastered and then go catch them on tour. DO it now.If you haven't heard or seen them lately, don't miss them this time around. Submitted by pretendersrock1 (Philadlephia Pa.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 1 found this helpful.

Electric Light Orchestra: Jeff Lynne (vocals, guitar); Kelly Groucutt (vocals, bass guitar); Richard Tandy (guitar, piano, Clavinet, Moog synthesizer); Mik Kaminski (violin); Hugh McDowell, Melvyn Gale (cello); Bev Bevan (drums, percussion, background vocals). Electric Light Orchestra's more modest follow-up to Eldorado is a very solid album, if not as bold or unified. It was also their first recorded at Musicland in Munich, which became Jeff Lynne's preferred venue for cutting records. At the time, he was also generating songs at a breakneck pace and had perfected the majestic, quasi-Beatles-type style (sort of high-wattage Magical Mystery Tour) introduced two albums earlier. The sound is stripped down a bit on Face the Music, Louis Clark's orchestral contributions generally more ...

| | Hot Cross Cryonics CD (2003)
Pretenders
$9.85 Recording information: Trax East, South River, NJ (01/2003-02/2003). Unknown Contributor Roles: Greg Drudy; Billy Werner; Casey Boland; Josh Jakubowski. On Cryonics, Hot Cross comes on like an East Coast the Blood Brothers, mixing ferocious guitar playing, desperate rhythms, and dual vocal shouting matches. It's an impressive punk debut -- charged up, tense, disturbing -- but still one has to feel like they haven't reached the intensity of the Blood Brothers' surreal narrative lyrics when they shout "f*ck not lest ye be f*cked," on "Fortune Teller"." But on this debut, Hot Cross stands out from their screamo peers with a good bit of D.C. hardcore in their sound as well as in some subtle experimentation. "Pretty Picture of a Broken Face," for example, with its catchy chorus could almost be Girls Against Boys until it goes into a classic hardcore breakdown; and "A Tale For the Ages" (the best track on the record) makes a huge leap forward from their first EP with a simmering, slow ...

Pretenders
$15.09 Recording information: The Flat Studios, Kingston, Jamaica. It's a rare one-rhythm album that can truly hold the listener's attention all the way through, but to be fair, that's not really what one-rhythm albums are meant to do. The idea is that a producer creates a good instrumental backing track ("rhythm" or "riddim" in reggae parlance) and invites a bunch of DJs and singers (but mostly DJs) to come up with lyrics and/or melody lines to go along with it. All of them are recorded onto a single album, and the listener or disc jockey will pick and choose from among them. What this means, of course, is that the rhythm had better be seriously hot. "Inspector Rhythm," created by DJ Karim, is pretty good: it's built on a spare, old-school three-against-two stutter-step beat, which is embellished by a minimalistic bass and occasional washes of synthesizer chord. Being pretty good, it elicits pretty good performances from most of the chatters and singers in attendance: Lady Saw brings her A game with the complex and brilliant "Champion," while Bounty Killer is also predictably ...
