Bassist Kyle Eastwood may enjoy a bit of name recognition thanks to his famous actor/director father Clint, but the musician's grasp of the post-bop idiom and his ability to mix it with accessible pop and R&B flavors finds him determined to stand on his own merits. Although 2006's NOW has moments of adventure and edge--the groovy fusion of the title track opener, for instance--much of the album stays smooth and laid-back, with featured vocalists and a wine-and-candlelight vibe. But even while keeping things mellow Eastwood manages some surprises, such as his fusion-fueled cover of the Police's "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic."

$11.99 Jazz musician Kyle Eastwood has an interesting background in jazz: his father, the actor/director Clint Eastwood, is a rabid enthusiast, and has made a film about Charlie Parker and a documentary about Thelonious Monk. Eastwood is a bassist who knows his jazz history, and 2005's PARIS BLUE ...
| | Nils Ready To Play CD (2007)
Now
$12.59 In smooth jazz, a number one radio hit is all it takes to turn an emerging talent into a bona fide genre star who gets all the best festival bookings. Raised on Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, and lots of funk, Munich-born guitarist Nils was the big genre story in 2005, breaking through with the lively title track from his in-the-pocket debut, Pacific Coast Highway; the song was number one on the Radio & Records airplay chart for seven weeks and was dubbed the most played song in the format for the year. Inspired by this success, Nils offered no big surprises but still engaged his fans just as much on Ready to Play, a disc that kept his sleek, crisp electric axe front and center while further exploring his pop, jazz, and R&B-driven options. Almost as if it's a self-fulfilling prophecy, he titled the first single "Ready to Play," which was one of those immediately infectious, grooving, and percussive tracks that radio and listeners could gobble up. Also perfect for another drive down PCH are the sensual "Just Smile"; the dreamy and ambient wordless vocal-enhanced "Catnap" (which taps into ...
| | Paul Brown White Sand CD (2007)
Now
$11.25 Smooth jazz producer, arranger, and songwriter Paul Brown made the transition to recording artist with 2004's Up Front, which, like its successor, 2005's The City, was a Top Ten hit on the Contemporary Jazz chart. With a switch from GRP to Peak Records, Brown should continue his popular ways with his third solo album White Sand. He has enlisted more guests than usual this time, to the point that the disc is practically one of those "and friends" duets collections. Al Jarreau sings on "Make Me Feel So Good," Bobby Caldwell on a cover of "Mercy Mercy Mercy," and Lina on a cover of "I Say a Little Prayer." Among the star instrumentalists, Boney James is heard on "Ol' Skoolin'," David Benoit on "R 'n' B Bump," Euge Groove on "More or Less Paul," Rick Braun on "Mr. Cool," and saxophone newcomer Jessy J on the title track. The guests simply augment the contributions of the leader, however; Brown's guitar is a dominant instrument, and he has a vocal on a cover of ...

| | Jeff Golub Grand Central CD (2007)
Now
$12.49 A staple of the smooth jazz format since the mid-'90s, the former sideman for Rod Stewart fills a unique rock/blues gap between the genre's overabundance of R&B-influenced saxmen and the cool, classy elegance of artists like Chris Botti. At his best, as on this exciting collection, he's raw and just a bit dirty, wailing with his buddies and having some loose, energetic fun. Though fans mostly saw him out there on the Guitars & Saxes Tour or on countless smooth cruises, Jeff Golub spent his down time at home in N.Y.C. seeking out local clubs where he could jam with his buddies and break in some new material. Fashioned as a celebration of both the loud and subtle conversations between workaday New Yorkers, Grand Central found Golub happy in the midst of his adopted hometown, jamming hard and fast as if the subway's doors are closing and he's just about to jump on or off. He plays it mostly fast and funky, but shows a unique emotional depth by making his guitar gently weep on a nice cover of "Something." It's clear he's having a blast taking a live-in-the-studio approach with a handful of the cats he ensembles with around town. Keyboardist Chris Palmaro throws a buoyant piano harmony ...
| | Four80East En Route CD (2007)
Now
$13.79 The line that separates jazz-electronica from "smooth jazz" (or, let's be honest, from plain old easy listening) can be a treacherously thin one. It's the line that separates Weather Report from, say, Spyro Gyra, and many artists drawn to that borderland end up becoming forever lost in the shifting sands of watered-down funk grooves and wind chimes. Four80East navigate the line pretty well, and if they occasionally stray onto the syrupy side, you get the feeling that they don't really care as long as the ...

$15.19 "Acoustic Christmas" is Michael's sixth release! For many years Michael's fans have begged him for a Christmas CD to no avail. In particular, Michael's good friend Doug Smith, a Grammy winning guitar player and National Fingerstyle Champion 200, insisted that he had to do a holiday record. Given the time constraints of family and business, Michael felt he just couldn't bring himself to invest three months on a project that might only get used one month out of a year. This past August, though, a large business commissioned Michael to produce a holiday CD to be presented to their employees and clients. Michael is now able to release this on his own label Out ...
