Originally released in 1974, LAST BOOGIE IN PARIS: THE COMPLETE CONCERT is Shout! Factory's expanded remaster of one of Johnny Rivers' most beloved late-period albums. Presented in its original order for the first time, this concert cooks from beginning to end. Rivers's blue-eyed soul voice and boogie-oriented guitar work enliven standards such as "Blue Suede Shoes" and "Long Tall Sally," mid-'60s soul stalwarts such as "Baby I Need Your Lovin" and "Sea Cruise,"and even Rivers's faithful version of the Doobie Brothers' "Rock Me A Little While." This is essential for fans.
Let's face it, only Johnny Rivers could possibly get away with an album title like LAST BOOGIE IN PARIS. Recorded live in Paris in 1973 with the L.A. Boogie Band--including drummer Jim Gordon, guitarist Dean Parks and keyboardist Michael Melvoin, father of future Prince cohort Wendy Melvoin--backing him, Rivers delivers a high-energy set of rock & roll favorites.
The songs, mostly classics from the early rock era like "Sea Cruise" and "Long Tall Sally," are passionately performed. This is an infectious blast of boogie that doesn't pretend to be any more than what it is; good old-fashioned rock & roll fun.
Johnny Rivers was no stranger to live albums by the time he released this 1973 show taped at the close of a European tour. His first four albums were all recorded live at the Los Angeles club the Whisky A Go-Go in the mid-'60s, and from those albums five singles went into the national Top Ten. After 1967, Rivers' recording career basically dried up for five years, until he returned to the Top Ten with a cover of Huey "Piano" Smith & the Clowns' "Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu." He was probably hoping that another live album would rekindle some of that earlier magic on the LP chart, but it wasn't to be: Last Boogie in Paris failed to land in the Top 100. It's not that it was a bad album, not by any means: Rivers still had a gift for making just about any song he covered his own, and for this tour he backed himself with some of the finest musicians the West Coast had to offer, dubbing them the L.A.
