After pleasing fans with the dance-rock feel on "Understanding the New Violence," this Toronto-area group has returned with more of a heavier, guitar-oriented sound. The quartet makes the most of a winding, indie-rock style nugget with "Dark Horse" which sets this album off in a great direction. Big but not over the top, the song's chorus and fabulous homestretch is a forerunner of what's to ensue. The soft-then-loud approach also enables a tune like "Hideaway" to be another early pleaser, although this one leans more towards the dance-rock feel as drummer Jon Drew occasionally goes overboard on the hi-hat. Perhaps what works best on Modern Currencies is how the momentum is never stifled, especially with the gorgeous "New Cities" that sounds a bit like a blending of the Killers, U2 and Joy Division that opens up with strong guitar work for the homestretch. Things take a slight detour with the murky and challenging "Out of Sight" that brings to mind Black Rebel Motorcycle Club but the urgency is again heard clearly during the fantastic "Breaking Glass." Perhaps the band's moment where the Jesus And Mary Chain might be a great comparison is the lean, steady and stellar "Kiss Me," whose only drawback is that it seems to end far too soon. Although there are several highlights throughout this consistently fine album, the defining moment seems to be "These Times" which symbolizes the energy, verve and drive of the album from start to finish. However, "Chain Fight" seems to pick up exactly where "These Times" left off. Overall this is an extremely delicious guitar-driven feast. ~ Jason MacNeil

Modern Currencies album
$9.89 The Stockholm trio of Peter Moren, Bjorn Yttling, and John Eriksson scored a European hit with their delightfully amateurish "Young Folks" single, included here complete with whistling and bongos. The rest of their second album, a fully realized fusion of intelligent songwriting and innovative production, is equally enchanting. Moren's "Objects Of My Affection" combines the rhythm, soul, and self-analysis of a RUBBER SOUL-era John Lennon composition with the atmosphere and melodic distortion of My Bloody Valentine, and Eriksson's "Up Against The Wall" evokes Blur's early Syd Barrett-influenced songs.
Peter Bjorn and John's third album deserves every bit of attention and hype it's received, from large media outlets right down to the lowliest blog. It's a major work of post-everything indie rock that has enough hooks, production genius, and emotional strength to make other rock acts ...

| | Mary Lou Lord Baby Blue CD (2004)
Modern Currencies album
$10.69 For a brief point in the '90s, Mary Lou Lord was an indie rock celebrity, best-known as a pre-Nirvana paramour of Kurt Cobain and a bęte noire of Courtney Love, which was enough to get her plenty of headlines during alt-rock's heyday. Lord never capitalized on that notoriety, releasing a couple of acclaimed EPs on Kill Rock Stars before moving to the Sony imprint WORK to release her 1998 debut, Got No Shadow, which retained her sensibility but polished it for a wider adult-alternative audience that never came. After that, she drifted away for a long stretch of time, quietly releasing a live record in 2001 before returning with her second full-fledged album, Baby Blue, in early 2004. During that time away, ...

| | Deerhunter Cryptograms CD (2007)
Modern Currencies music CDs
$11.89 Deerhunter's first album, the self-titled release from Atlanta-based Stickfigure, was a cacophonous, messy, punk-driven record that banged and pulsated along in the shock and anger after bass player Justin Bosworth's sudden death in 2004. By the time the band set about recording their second album, however, they had added another guitarist, one who focused more on twisting and mechanizing sound, and had calmed down considerably. Because of this, much of Cryptograms meanders about in the experimental realm, where swells and layers matter more than melody or structure. It does make for contrast, this ebb-and-flow against the greater discord of the sung pieces, but these instrumentals don't do enough to actually mean anything. From the "Intro" to "Red ...
