Gotta Have Gospel Gold album
$15.95 The first disc of PSALMS, HYMNS & SPIRITUAL SONGS is straightforward, as McClurkin treads in traditional gospel fashion, singing standards and beautiful self-penned songs of praise (including the rousing "I Will Sing") to the crowd's relentless pleasure. The second disc unfolds a bit more unpredictably, as McClurkin breaks into impromptu medleys and leads a playful discussion about spreading the gospel to the ...
| | Fred Hammond Somethin' 'Bout Love CD (2004)
Gotta Have Gospel Gold CD music
$8.99 Detroit vocalist Fred Hammond has danced skillfully on that gloriously blurred line between gospel and sweet soul music for decades, whether solo or with his group Commissioned. Hammond's knack for letting the spirit resound in his vocals has earned him a well-deserved following. The energetic SOMETHIN' 'BOUT LOVE adds to his catalogue of energetic records with a slate of inspired, groove-laden odes to salvation.
Hammond is also a skillful songwriter, co-penning most of the album's tunes, including the deft, intricate single "Celebrate (He Lives)." Brian McKnight and Marvin L. Winans join him for a lustrous trio on the undeniably catchy "Lord We Need Your Love." Hammond's closest musical cousin in the secular world is Stevie Wonder, a connection accentuated when he ably covers Wonder's "Love's in Need." Hammond's records craftily interweave R&B and inspirational music, and SOMETHIN' 'BOUT LOVE continues that tradition.

$9.99 Mary Mary's 2005 self-titled album, their third release, finds sisters Tina and Erica Atkins returning in fine form after a three-year hiatus. Known for their energetic take on contemporary gospel, the dynamic duo cranks up the spiritual party several notches on MARY MARY, drawing not only on neo-R&B grooves, but on swing, mainstream pop, and club-oriented dance music ("The Real ...
| | Them Crooked Vultures CD (2009)
Gotta Have Gospel Gold songs
$11.19 Often, supergroups wind up dominated by one particular personality - think Eric Clapton in Derek & the Dominos, Jack White in the Raconteurs -- which makes the egalitarianism of Them Crooked Vultures all the more remarkable. Of course, when it comes down to it, it's a group of three natural-born collaborators: John Paul Jones, the old studio pro who gravitated toward provocative partners after Led Zeppelin's demise, teaming up with R.E.M. as easily as he did with avant-queen Diamanda Galas and nu-folkster Sara Watkins; Dave Grohl, who hopped into an empty drummer's chair whenever the opportunity presented itself; and Josh Homme, who set up a mini-empire based entirely on jam sessions. If Them Crooked Vultures brings to mind Homme's projects more than Grohl's or Jones', it's largely ...

| | Rosanne Cash List CD (2009)
Gotta Have Gospel Gold CD music
$14.45 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand. It's a lovely and redemptive outing that looks back to go forward. When Cash turned 18, her father, alarmed that his daughter only knew the songs that were getting played on the radio, gave her a list of what he considered 100 essential American songs; Cash kept that list, and now she's drawn on it for this wonderfully nuanced outing that brims with a kind of redemptive timelessness. THE LIST is a renewal and a testament to life, and it belongs to her father as much as it belongs to her, a beautiful restatement of her father's passions, only now, they've become his daughter's treasures, as well. It's an affirming story, but that's all it would be if Cash didn't sing her heart out here. The opener, a version of Jimmie Rodgers' "Miss the Mississippi and You," is full of comfortable grace and sentiment, and Cash keeps that fine emotional tone throughout this set. Songs like the folk classic "500 Miles" feel at once both lovingly rendered and reborn for a new century in Cash's hands. There's also her fine rendering of Bob Dylan's "Girl ...
| | George Coleman At Yoshi's CD (1987)
Gotta Have Gospel Gold music CDs
$10.69 Tenor saxophonist George Coleman is best known for his mid-1960s stint in Miles Davis's quintet, playing with the trumpet legend between the departure of John Coltrane and the arrival of Wayne Shorter, most notably on a string of '64 live dates. Although Coleman kept a fairly low profile in the following decades, he did record sporadically as a bandleader, and AT YOSHI'S stands as one of the finest outings under his own name. On this seven-song set, Coleman is backed ...
