Like 2000s Live at the Montreux Jazz Festival, Lynne Arriale's first live album, her second, Live, brings out the best tendencies in her trio's playing. Arriale has long been established as one of the most creative and thoughtful pianists in jazz, and after ten years together she and her band -- bassist Jay Anderson and drummer Steve Davis -- know where one another is heading long before they get there, making for playfully intuitive and often unexpected interactions. Arriale's nimble-fingered, graceful excursions display both technique and heart, and though she rarely veers too far from the melody at a song's core, she's not finished with a piece until she's explored all of its possibilities. Much of the material performed here at the 2005 Burghausen Jazz Week in Germany appeared first on Arriale's studio recordings, including two very hip covers, the Beatles' "Come Together," which Arriale deconstructs and reconstructs in a most inventive manner, and the New Orleans standard "Iko Iko," which opens the recording. Arriale also enjoys tripping to the tropics, and both "Braziliana" and "Flamenco" (which, like the two aforementioned covers, appear on her 2004 Come Together album) are bold statements, the former a rhythmic tour de force and the latter a stunning example of Arriale's seamless fusing of classical and jazz elements. The trio's take on Abdullah Ibrahim's "Mountain of the Night" manages to remain absorbing even after 11-plus minutes without so much as a tempo change, and the set-closing take on Thelonious Monk's "Bemsha Swing" leaves little doubt that these musicians are more than willing to venture into deep and difficult waters. A DVD of the performance in 5.1 surround sound is also included in the package, adding a version of the standard "Alone Together" to the program. ~ Jeff Tamarkin Purchase Live CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Lynne Arriale Come Together CD (2004)
Live album
$17.69 The Lynne Arriale Trio celebrate their tenth anniversary with the release of Come Together. This collection features six originals composed by the pianist along with stellar covers of the Beatles' "Come Together," the Scottish classic "Red Is the Rose," and "Iko Iko" from the film titled The Big Easy. Lynne Arriale's classical essence is very apparent on "Flamenco." She offers an irresistible landscape of captivating flamenco rhythms merged with distinct classical/jazz elements. "Sea and Sand" and "Twilight" both provide the perfect respite from the up-tempo burner "Sunburst" and its spontaneous riffs. On these beautiful ballads, the melodies and her improvisations are pensive and create an imaginative aura of relaxation. Arriale's piano proficiency continues to play the starring role in this wonderful trio, but with the aid of Steve Davis on drums and Jay Anderson on acoustic bass, together they present a beautiful jazz program that results ...
| | Billie Holiday Complete Verve Studio Master Takes CDs (2005) Remastered; Box Set
Live CD music
$51.95 THE COMPLETE VERVE STUDIO MASTER TAKES makes a definitive and compelling case for Holiday's Verve tenure. Packaged in a deep-dish metallic box (which resembles the world's most beautiful lunch pail), THE COMPLETE comprises six CDs, a 60-page booklet filled with rare photographs and superb liner notes, and dazzlingly crisp sound via digital remastering. The musicians on these sessions were some of the finest of the era, and Holiday herself--even with a gift impaired by time and abuse--sings with impeccable artistry, and beautifully enough to break the heart. The set is essential for completists, and is also a great one-stop for those looking to acquaint themselves with Lady Day's later work.
Billie Holiday fans will argue eternally over the relative merits of the different phases of her career. In these arguments Lady Day's work for Verve, which roughly covered the last decade of her life, often gets short shrift. While it cannot be denied that Holiday had lost much of the elasticity and spring in her voice (due in large part to a rough life filled with alcohol and drug abuse), and that the recordings were sometimes weighted too heavily with strings and saccharine arrangements, it is impossible to overlook the exquisite phrasing and raw emotion underscoring many of these performances.

| | Wynton Marsalis Live At The House Of Tribes CD (2005)
Live music CDs
$12.75 This live set finds jazz ambassador Wynton Marsalis doing what he does best--that is, playing straightforward, bop-inflected jazz with flawless technique. Marsalis pays homage to the masters with versions of Thelonious Monk's "Green Chimneys" and Charlie Parker's "Donna Lee," and offers a lilting, smoky reading of the standard "You Don't Know What Love ...
| | Sonny Rollins Without A Song: The 9/11 Concert CD (2005)
Live songs
$9.69 Recorded on September 15th, 2001, WITHOUT A SONG is a live recording by jazz icon Sonny Rollins, observing the World Trade Center disaster that occurred just four days prior to the concert. Rollins was one of the few musicians from jazz's golden age still performing with a sense of vitality, and that is especially clear on this recording, which is imbued with the gravity appropriate to the aforementioned tragedy.
Yet the proceedings are never overwhelmed by pathos or grief. Instead, Rollins and his five-piece ensemble offer spirited takes on the standards "Where or When" and "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square," and Rollins's own Latin-inflected "Global Warming." The wit, range, and dexterity that made the saxophonist's ...
| | Kenny Barron Perfect Set: Live At Bradley's 2 CD (2005)
Live album
$14.69 Bradley's was a legendary New York City jazz club that for 25 years acted as a gathering place for many of the Big Apple's top musicians, a place to hang out. In 1996, the Kenny Barron Trio dug in before the illustrious audience and played at their best. Barron and drummer Ben Riley were members of Sphere, a quartet (with tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse and bassist Buster Williams) that initially paid tribute to Thelonious Monk. On this trio set, "The Only One" is based on Monk's "Hackensack," Barron takes Thelonious' "Shuffle Boil" as an unaccompanied piano solo, and the threesome jams on "Well You Needn't." The other two songs, the standard "You Don't Know What Love Is" and Barron's "Twilight Song," are not connected to the ...
| | Houston Person All Soul CD (2005)
Live CD music
$13.45 It seems like every fall for the last ten years or so, jazz fans have been graced by the release of a new Houston Person record. The Texas tenor is one of the last men standing and 2005's All Soul shows he is standing as tall as ever. His gruff but inviting tone is steady and true, and a quick listen to the first track shows it hasn't dropped off at all. On the album he is joined by Eddie Allen on trumpet, Stan Hope on piano, Randy Johnston on guitar, Per-Ola Gadd on bass, and Chip White on drums for a mix of ballads and hard bop groovers. They back him quite ably on the arrangements, but it's hard not to wish Person took all the solos, especially when Allen and Johnston reel off technically proficient but soul-less solos (in comparison to Person anyway). Person as usual positively bleeds heart and soul on the ballads like "All Soul" and "Let It Be Me," which he effortlessly rescues from cheesiness, and romps through the up-tempo tracks like Hank Mobley's "Bossa for Baby," his own very Art Blakey-sounding "Why Not," and the loping "2 Rb's." The best moments of all come on Person's solos during a spirited take on Percy Mayfield's classic "Please Send Me Someone to Love," where you can picture him walking the bar and sending a packed club into an uproar as he reaches deeper into his soul and spills it all out. Too bad the proceedings come back down to earth when the other soloists take over, but then that is the nature of this record and so many like it that feature giants like Person. You have to wait out the chaff to get to the wheat. On All Soul the waiting is ...

| | Rona Figueroa Quasilulu 2 CD (2006)
Live songs
$11.49 In big Broadway musicals, as well as in small ones, the lead characters have names and the chorus characters do not. Oftentimes, the chorus actors name their thankless roles themselves, to make their work more interesting. QUASILULU was the name given to a pimp character by a chorus actor in a big Broadway musical. His musical theater actress friend heard the name and thought it sounded like a rock band. A year later she started that rock band.QUASILULU began as a casual, if not shy foray into songwriting. Rona Figueroa, said musical theater actress, was a closet poet who somehow never connected her words with music until she decided, on a whim and a little inspiration, to buy herself a guitar in the year 2000. The result of that purchase and a few invitations thrown out to musician friends interested in her budding songstressness, was an unexpectedly sophisticated, creative collaboration of young players with conservatory training the likes of Juilliard, Berklee School of Music and the big Broadway. Name dropping aside, the music does not sound classical, nor does it sound like musical theater. Expect full rockness with a gorgeous ride of peaks and valleys made for ears that love to get lost in electric richness. This NYC 6 piece group is made up of electric violin, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, electric bass, drumkit, lead and back up vocals. QUASILULU2 is the long awaited second album. An ambitious follow-up that succeeds the first as, naturally, bigger and better. Quasilulu2 is rockier, punchier and even more lush than their first album, sacrificing nothing ...
