$7.55 Personnel: Dado Parisini, Celso Valli (piano, keyboards); Alfredo Golino (drums). Laura Pausini, a multilingual Italian pop singer who won a Latin Grammy in 2005 for Best Female Pop Vocal Album, decided to record an album of cover songs when she returned to the studio to record her followup effort. This is a fairly standard practice for pop/rock artists, of course, especially in the wake of a mammoth success like the one Pausini experienced with Resta in Ascolto (released concurrently in Spanish as Escucha in the U.S.). Io Canto (likewise released concurrently in Spanish, as Yo Canto) is a somewhat unusual covers album, however, for it's comprised of Italian pop/rock songs from the 1970s, '80s, and '90s -- few, if any, of which will be familiar to listeners across the Atlantic. Pausini performs the songs in a manner similar to that of Resta in Ascolto: the songs are heavily produced, layered with guitar, bass, and drums in addition to strings and synthesizers, and the performances are quite dramatic, often soaring to intense heights during the choruses, complemented by lyrics that are moody and poetic. Consequently, anyone who enjoyed Resta in Ascolto will find much to savor on Io Canto, as the two albums sound similar musically. The difference is in the songwriting, which is wonderfully varied, in terms of lyrics as well as arrangements, resulting in one of the most interesting albums of Pausini's career to date. Io Canto is interesting not only because of the array of songwriting showcased throughout, but also because of how personal these songs ...

$13.49 Personnel: Yechiel Hasson (guitar); Avshalom Caspi (piano); Alvaro Garrido (percussion). Arrangers: Yechiel Hasson; Alvaro Garrido; Yasmin Levy. Yasmin Levy has proved herself to be the leading exponent of Ladino song (Ladino is the language of the Sephardic Jews whose roots are in Spain). However, her previous albums have never quite captured her potential. This time, though, she's hit the spot, finding both the intensity of performance and delicacy of arrangement that's been her hallmark. The style is a mix of influences that blend perfectly -- listen carefully and you can hear traces of flamenco nestled alongside Middle Eastern music, with influences ...

$27.05 Includes 1 bonus track. Though nearly half of the 16 tracks on Pure Michael Hedges are found on another Windham Hill collection, Best of Michael Hedges, the album is still a nice overview of one of the late 20th century's most inventive acoustic guitar players. And as Hedges was predominantly a guitarist, and not a singer, most of the cuts are instrumentals, though the two vocal tracks that do make it on, "The Streamlined Man" (from 1985's Watching My Life Go By) and "I Carry Your Heart" (from 1990s Taproot, with help from Graham Nash and David Crosby), are probably the best examples of how Hedges sounded when he was singing his best. However, it's for the incredible guitar that most people listen to his music, and Pure Michael Hedges doesn't disappoint there at all. Popular pieces like "Bensusan" and "Because It's There" are both included, and are good representations of his unique, intricate style (it often sounds that there's more than one guitar playing, though there never is), and the two songs from the 1999 posthumous release, Torched, "Java Man" and "Ursa Major," show that his skill and innovation were still just developing before his untimely death. The bonus track, a cover of the Beatles "If I Needed Someone," which was originally on the Windham Hill tribute ...

$16.39 I am a full time pediatrician, husband and father who has used music all along to communicate and connect with my children. I have written and recorded four albums of mostly original music as my family has grown and developed. This is my fifth project, this time involving their school, classmates and fellow parishioners.Mission is a collection of songs written over 8 years with and for the children of Saint Paul’s Church in North Canton, OH. What started it all was a project with the fourth graders who were working on writing their own personal mission statements. They partnered with someone they identified as a mentor and then began the process of exploring the calling that God had for each of them. Each year a class would get together with me and we would discuss the ideas that were important to them: Service, Making a difference, Following God’s Word, etc.. Using musical styles that would best bring out the ideas and the unique personality of each group, I came up with a song that they could call their own. Over this time as well, I would be asked to write something for a particular Mass who’s theme was this or that, or for a particular workshop ...
