| | Hector Lavoe Strikes Back CD Hector Lavoe Discography of CDs
(4 Customer Reviews)
LaVoe and Willie Colon came blazing out of the bugalu era and wrote a new script for New York salsa during the late '60s and early '70s: a script that included Puerto Rican and Panamanian graftings on the basic Cuban scion, and a tough lyricism that spoke of "barrio" problems to a "barrio audience". Then the pair split, and eventually Ruben Blades filled LaVoe's place in the Colon band's developing persona. Now -- for this album at least -- LaVoe and Colon are back together with that fat, macho trombone sound and the old width of reference (including a splendid plena, "En el Fiando.") ~ John Storm Roberts, Original Music
Personnel: Héctor Lavoe (vocals); Justo Betancourt, Milton Cardona, Tito Allen, Willie Colón (vocals); Leopoldo Pineda, Lewis Kahn (trombone); Jose Arturo Ortiz (keyboards); Oskar Cartaya (bass guitar); Bobby Allende (congas); Raymond Colon (bongos); Marc Quiñones (timbales, percussion).

| Strikes Back Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Hector Lavoe Strikes Back I'm not going to say that this was his best work but it was for me the most moving CD of his. The song Taxi brought me to tears it depicts a time of sadness and dispare. This CD is about Hector Juan Perez the man. When Hector sings he speaks to your soul. Ilove the CD but I also love the man and his music. Submitted by maybelserrano (Waukegan,IL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Hector strikes back indeed with this1! Among the other great solos by hector this is my favorite and came out 1987 the year I was born might I add makes me proud to be born that year as one of the greatest salsanero's does his last solo the year I came into this world :). Although his voice wasnt the same from the bad habbits he had before he still had the same great talent as before and did his last solo with perfection every track is a hit on here......POR QUE SOY ASI ME LLAMA LOCOoo . "This is my type of salsa music" The musical arrangements in this CD are great. I'm a salsa lover but there is something about salsa music that really inspires me; and that's salsa played with trombones. I like this type of percussion in salsa, plus the songs and the sounds in this CD are great. I have to say that this is one of the best salsa albums ever recorded by Héctor Lavoe. "Indeed, PONCE ES PONCE". I love this song very much because my girlfriend is also from Ponce, which was also Hector's native puertorrican town. His best solo album... I have listened to all of Hector Lavoe's solo albums, and this is his best one. Hector literaly pours his heart and soul in to this album. The songs Loco, Taxi, Como No Voy a Llorar let you know what Hector was feeling at the time he recorded the album. Sadly, it was his last full solo album. This album was nominated for a grammy in 1987. A classic that is highly recommended. Submitted by PKPRO (Bronx,NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Dengue Fever Venus On Earth CD (2008)
Strikes Back
$12.89 This Los Angeles-based band features a Cambodian vocalist (she sings in both English and Khmer) and takes as its primary inspiration the Cambodian rock of the 1960s. As there isn't exactly an overload of bands playing retro-psychedelic Cambodian rock in America in the 2000s, Dengue Fever stands out, and especially so with their beautifully realized second album, VENUS ON EARTH.
Dengue Fever's music is a heady cocktail of reverb-laden guitar, Farfisa organ, horns, and shuffling rhythms that channels jazz, lounge music, Southeast Asian pop, and spy movie music. "Woman in Her Shoes" sounds like a cross between Nico and the Zombies, and "Seeing Hands" recalls a mix of the Velvet Underground and a Bollywood tune, while "Monsoon of Perfume" is as effortlessly entrancing as Roy Orbison. In short, it's hard to classify VENUS ON ...

Strikes Back
$14.89 Tinariwen strip rock down to its basic building blocks of rhythm, guitars, and voice. On their second CD there are no fancy studio tricks or multiple overdubs. They stick to what they've shown they do well -- keep the music raw and emotional. While there are similarities to the desert blues of Mali, these Tuareg nomads from the Western Sahara are as much as rock band as the Stones at their best, capable of conjuring ...
