Atlanta 2 Memphis
$14.29 The first song on FACE OFF: PART II, "WWW? (Who Want War)," finds Atlanta, Georgia's Pastor Troy in a ferocious rage, challenging all comers; however, 15 tracks later, he closes the record with the swift-moving, but tenderly inspirational, "Keep on Movin'." This stark contrast is the norm for Pastor Troy. Throughout this album and his previous records, this reverend of crunk has made a tradition out of combining a rich, sincere spirituality with a hardcore urban vibe.
FACE OFF: PART II is Pastor Troy's sequel to his successful 2001 record, and is supremely faithful in its life-in-the-now mentality, in both its lyrics and the accompanying beats. He keeps up a relentless pace, roaring "I'm coming at ya" on "Murder Man," and ...
| | Chamillionaire Sound Of Revenge CD (2005) Parental Advisory
Atlanta 2 Memphis
$13.15 With THE SOUND OF REVENGE, Chamillionaire's 2005 Universal debut, the Houston-based rapper makes the most of his major-label deal, which includes his own Chamillitary imprint. On SOR, Paul Wall's former collaborator amps up that duo's signature chopped-and-screwed mixtape sound with heavy-duty arrangements that expertly showcase Chamillionaire's deep, ...

| | Pastor Troy By Choice Or By Force CD (2006)
Atlanta 2 Memphis
$14.29 BY CHOICE OR BY FORCE is another potent dose of Southern-styled hardcore from Pastor Troy. Subtlety isn't exactly Troy's strong suit, but his fans aren't looking for nuance anyway. Laying down no-nonsense gangsta narratives in an adrenaline-fueled shout-rap over ominous, downtempo beats and samples, Troy doesn't skimp on the street bravado ...

| | Tela Now Or Never CD (1998)
Atlanta 2 Memphis
$11.89 Tela's NOW OR NEVER is distinguished by the sophistication of it's production and the advanced conceptualism at work throughout its smoothly-flowing 20 (!) cuts. The range of musical styles drawn on for the tracks is remarkable; everything from funk and R&B to pop and even classical music is employed here. There's a grandness to the themes here, which raise the typical gangsta concerns to an almost mythical level. This grandiose approach doesn't mean that there's any immediacy or viscerality sacrificed on NOW OR NEVER, though--it resonates like the most street-credible hop-hop. ...

Atlanta 2 Memphis
$12.59 The thinking man's favorite MC, Pharoahe Monch put in work in the 1990s as one half of Organized Konfusion. His exceptional 1999 debut, INTERNAL AFFAIRS (perhaps the apex of Rawkus's first wave), raised the bar for intelligent lyricism. After an eight year absence, the South Side, Queens native brings a gang of stress build-up to his sophomore release, DESIRE. Setting his sights on everything from crooked record labels to the war in Iraq, Pharoahe unleashes his lyrical fury with a barrage of head-scratching homonyms and tongue-twisted alliteration that puts Das EFX to shame. He speaks of gun violence on "When the Gun Draws," reworks PE's "Welcome to the Terrordome" for the new millennium, and gets a little crossover on "Body Baby." The beats bang thanks to the Alchemist, Denaun Porter, Sean C, Black Milk, Lee Stone, and Pharoahe himself, while Erykah Badu, Mr. Porter, Dwele, and Tone are featured. Without a doubt, DESIRE ranks among the best hip-hop albums of 2007.
