Personnel: James Taylor (vocals). JAMES TAYLOR AT CHRISTMAS (2006) is essentially a repackaging of the artist's 2004 JAMES TAYLOR: A CHRISTMAS ALBUM, which was made available in Hallmark stores. "Deck the Halls," featured on the Hallmark album, is not on AT CHRISTMAS, which instead features a version of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and "River," originally released on a Taylor studio album in 2002. These technicalities aside, AT CHRISTMAS is a mellow and sweet holiday offering from the venerable singer-songwriter, with Taylor's gentle acoustic and easy tenor caressing "Go Tell It On the Mountain" and "The Christmas Song." Taylor fans looking for a little Christmas cheer will want to pick this one up. For the most part, holiday-themed albums are about as memorable as what you had for lunch a month ago. As humans continue to evolve, there's a very good chance that we'll develop some sort of yuletide audio bypass valve that will allow us to filter the three-and-a-half million versions of every Christmas song ever made into one solid rendition that either pleases or displeases us, and can be dealt with accordingly. That said, James Taylor's brilliantly titled James Taylor at Christmas is about as inoffensive a collection of seasonal classics as one could hope for. The legendary singer/songwriter's warm voice is the perfect vessel for "Winter Wonderland," "Jingle Bells," and the "Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)" because it makes absolutely no impression on the listener. ~ James Christopher Monger James Taylor At Christmas Music James Taylor At Christmas Songs James Taylor At Christmas Music Review Buy James Taylor At Christmas CD Purchase James Taylor At Christmas CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Complete Velvets CD (1996) (Import) United Kingdom

| | Sarah McLachlan Wintersong CD (2006)
James Taylor At Christmas
$9.25 Personnel: Sarah McLachlan (vocals); Diana Krall. Sarah McLachlan's WINTERSONG is a holiday album, yet it eschews the sprightly, sparkly feel of most seasonal releases. Instead, McLachlan sticks to the moody, adult contemporary folk sound for which she's known, bringing a reflective, occasionally melancholy atmosphere to a range of popular and traditional Christmas favorites. McLachlan's choice of covers is especially enjoyable; between her personal takes on "Greensleeves" and "Silent Night," she wedges emotive readings of songs by Gordon Lightfoot ("Song for a Winter's Night"), John Lennon ("Happy X-Man (War is Over)"), and Joni Mitchell ("River"). The blend of acoustic guitar, swelling synths, and the singer's wistful voice make WINTERSONG an appealing alternative to the usual holiday fare. Because no artist's career is truly complete without a holiday album, Sarah McLachlan took yet another step toward establishing her place in sentimental adult contemporary radio history with Wintersong. For the most part, the singer chooses the darker, more melancholic, and "wintry" pieces to cover (there's no "Joy to the World" or "Angels We Have Heard on High," for example), focusing as much on the Christmas ...
| | Bette Midler Cool Yule CD (2006)
James Taylor At Christmas
$9.25 Personnel: Bette Midler (vocals); Deantoni Parks (acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Doug Livingston (steel guitar); Randy Waldman (keyboards); Dave Carpenter (upright bass); Vinnie Colaiuta (drums); Bashiri Johnson (percussion); Fonzi Thornton (background vocals). It seems odd that Bette Midler didn't release her first Christmas album until 2006, but COOL YULE proves worth the wait. A solid collection of seasonal favorites, the album features Midler in typically excellent voice backed with a kicky jazz combo and orchestra. Along with the usual standards, Midler dips into more personal waters, recalling her own Hawaiian childhood with the traditional island tune "Mele Kalikimaka" and performing a tongue-in-cheek rewrite of her previous hit "From A Distance." A duet with Johnny Mathis on a medley of Yuletide favorites is equally endearing. Well in advance of the Christmas season, Bette Midler, perhaps in her zeal to join the ranks of other artists like Bing Crosby, Elvis, and Johnny Mathis (the latter with whom she sings the duet here, "Winter Wonderland/Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!") with famed holiday work, has come out with her first-ever Christmas album, Cool Yule. Most of the songs are covers of seasonal classics ("Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," "White Christmas," ...
