Closed Captioned; Soundtrack English; English Subtitles; Amaray Case The name may have been changed to Harper to capitalize on Paul Newman's recent success with HUD (1963), but this private-eye mystery is unmistakably based on a Ross MacDonald Lew Archer novel. When a millionaire businessman turns up missing, his estranged invalid wife (Lauren Bacall) hires private detective Harper (Newman) to find him. The P.I. quickly discovers that the victim has been kidnapped by some of those nearest and dearest to him, and uncovers a tangled web of smuggling, greed, drugs and petty family jealousies. With a script from prolific longtime Hollywood screenwriter William Goldman, this Lew Harper detective thriller was followed up nine years later with the THE DEAD POOL (1975). Color by Technicolor; shot in Panavision.
A sequel, "The Drowning Pool," was made a decade later in 1976. It also starred Paul Newman, along with Joanne Woodward, Anthony Franciosa, Murray Hamilton, and Melanie Griffth. It was directed by Stuart Rosenberg from a screenplay by Tracy Keenan Wynn, Lorenzo Semple, and Walter Hill. | | Hud DVD (1963) Widescreen
Harper DVD
$7.05 Martin Ritt's HUD is an adaptation of Larry McMurtry's novel HORSEMAN, PASS BY, successfully transformed into an entertaining and ambitious contemporary Western. Set on a Texas ranch where Cadillacs, cattle, and transistor radios coexist uneasily, the film stars Paul Newman as the hedonistic, arrogant, and rebellious farmhand Hud Bannon. Hud is constantly at odds with his kind father Homer (Melvyn Douglas), who blames him for the death of his brother. Hud further strains their relationship when he begins taking his nephew out drinking and chasing women. But when it appears that Homer's herd of cattle may have contracted hoof-and-mouth disease, he asks his son's help and advice. Predictably, Homer and Hud disagree about what should be done with the cattle, so Hud tries to gain ownership of the ranch--which could mean taking away his father's sole possession and livelihood. Beautifully photographed, the film has a clean visual style, emphasizing both the open spaces of the Texan landscape and the Cadillacs and Dr. Pepper signs that adorn it. Patricia Neal won an oscar for her role, and Newman's performance gives the film its wit and considerable velocity; ...

| | Pink Flamingos DVD (1972) Anniversary Edition
Harper film
$10.85 Baltimore director John Waters's outrageous 1971 debut PINK FLAMINGOS burst onto the filmmaking scene like the ample flesh of its drag-queen star through the seams of a lamé dress. Conceived as a way to garner attention for Waters's fledgling career, this paean to bad taste certainly did just that--so much so that decades later, the film still retains the power to shock with its gleeful demolition of every known human taboo.
Waters's attempt at making the most vile and offensive movie ever made is aptly mirrored in his characters' competition for the title of "Filthiest Person Alive." Overweight transvestite and Waters muse Divine (aka Glen Milstead) stars as the current record holder, Babs Johnson, who lives in a trailer park with her trashy friend Cotton (Mary Vivian Pearce), incestuous son Crackers (Danny Mills), and mentally-stunted mother Edie (Edith Massey), who spends her time in a playpen and is obsessed with eggs. Vying for Babs's filthy title is evil middle-class couple Raymond (David Lochary) and Connie Marble (Mink Stole), who fund porno shops, sell heroin to grade-schoolers, and run a white-slave trade that involves kidnapping young women, imprisoning them in their dungeon-like basement, raping and impregnating them, and selling their babies to lesbian couples. In between, there's sex with chickens, whistling rectums, actual fellatio, and canine excrement--ensuring not only gross-out comedy par ...
| | Legend Of Suram Fortress/Ashik Kerib DVD (1985) Subtitled
Harper review
$25.05 This double feature of films by acclaimed Russian director Sergei Paradjanov contains both THE LEGEND OF SURAM FORTRESS and ASHIK KERIB.
ASHIK KERIB, based on Mikhail Lermontov's fable, follows the wandering minstrel Ashik Kerib as he journeys for 1000 days and nights, trying to earn enough money to marry his beloved. Paradjanov blends early Russian artwork, minutely choreographed sequences, and traditional and contemporary music to produce an astonishing film that eschews traditional narrative for a more unique, expressive style.
In THE LEGEND OF SURAM FORTRESS, Paradjanov once again draws on a Russian folk tale and combines it with his own unique style to create a film full of visual and aural splendor. The story is set in Medieval Georgia, where the Georgian people are attempting to construct a fortress, but keep failing because they can not get the walls to stand up. However, a fortune teller remembers an old prophecy that says the son of her lover must be walled up in the fortress in order for it ...
