1966's BLUESBREAKERS WITH ERIC CLAPTON is full of portent, as some of its participants would become superstars after its release. Future Cream guitarist Eric Clapton was highly rated enough in the UK blues-rock scene to score second billing, but it wasn't until this recording that he'd had the opportunity to truly stretch out in the studio and show off his awesome soloing skills. Clapton's earlier stint in the Yardbirds had found his ideas largely shouted down by pop-oriented producer/manager Giorgio Gomelsky, but here kindred spirit/producer Mike Vernon simply let Clapton play as he wished. The sympathetic rhythm section of Hughie Flint and future Fleetwood Mac founder John McVie, along with Mayall's best-ever vocals and organ, make BLUESBREAKERS WITH ERIC CLAPTON one of the all-time great British blues albums.

Disc One features the original album's 12 in mono and in stereo for a total of 24 tracks. Disc Two features an additional 19 tracks including studio takes, BBC sessions, live versions and much more. This stunning package confirms that this is the absolute best British Blues album ever recorded! 43 tracks total. Universal.

Additional personnel: Alan Skidmore (tenor saxophone); John Almond (baritone saxophone); Dennis Healey (trumpet).Q (p.156) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]his was the record that sealed his guitar-hero status and, for the first time, put a blues album in the UK Top 10." Q - Recommended Down Beat (8/95, p.55) - 4.5 Stars - Very Good/Excellent - "...Clapton displays enough control and buoyant enthusiasm in his playing to justify the scrawling of `Clapton is God' on London walls....Mayall, meantime, explores the upper range of his pale voice with urgency and conviction..." Musician (4/95, p.76) - "...Clapton blazes with a maturity beyond his years, and his tone pierces and rumbles with a freedom he's rarely evoked since....shows how even the greats can be elevated by the right rhythm section..." Blues Breakers With Eric Clapton Music Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) Finally somewhat got it right! I've owned 3 different versions of this over the last 10 years & never really understood all the fuss until I forked out the bucks for this. This is the correct mono mix. The drums really kick, the guitar speaks highly to yeah, the bass thumps real good, especially for '65 & Mayall is mixed just perfect. The stereo mix is what sounds like what I always called "fake" stereo. I think Disraeli Gears was the first real stereo album. That said, all the Universal UK remasters sound outstanding & are worth the money. Right now, a few of them are available for order for a little over $10 each. Guitar Heaven By Eric Clapton! Few albums have had greater impact than John Mayall’s 1966 landmark “Blues Breakers With Eric Clapton.” Released by the Decca label in Britain on 22 July 1966, literally days after Clapton left the Bluesbreakers and just a week before Cream’s debut, it went all the way to #6, a pretty mean feat, since Mayall’s band had never had a hit single. This may have been a first in Britain.
Of course, this is the album that set the blues and guitar worlds aflame and established Eric Clapton’s name worldwide as the most passionate of musical interpreters. If you haven’t yet heard “Beano” -- as it is affectionately known, because Clapton is pictured reading a “Beano” comic book on its cover -- then you ain’t heard nuthin’ yet! This is the stuff of legends.
From the album’s first notes, you realize that you’re in guitar heaven, as “Slowhand” shows us the way electric guitar can and should be played. Clapton’s virtuoso playing is white hot throughout. Playing with a maturity beyond his 21 years, the young Eric Clapton so influenced the guitar world that Gibson eventually reissued the Les Paul model -- out-of-production since 1960 -- which Clapton then played.
John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers served -- and serves still today -- as a finishing school for great musicians and sidemen (Clapton, Peter Green, Mick Taylor, Walter Trout, Coco Montoya, John McVie, Jack Bruce, Aynsley Dunbar, Mick Fleetwood and others). Mayall’s proselytizing the blues (he’s 73 years old!), his songwriting skills, and his other musical talents should not be ignored nor taken lightly.

Seminal Brit Blues CD Nicknamed the "Beano" album because Clapton was reading Beano magazine on the cover, these CDs showcase Clapton playing at his searing, blues best the tunes that made him want to be a guitarist, at a time when his nickname in England was "God" and he had not yet become so laid back as to be complacent. Remastering job is excellent, as is the music on the bonus CD and the accompanying booklet. Mayall on vocals and harmonica are top notch as well, and the accompanying "Blues Breakers," while not exceptional, are more than adequate to provide a competent rhythmic foundation. Awesome This breaks the blues lid high off! Great nostalgic guitar riffs; the way blues is meant to be heard! Submitted by Lita (Anaheim, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Blue Break the barrier Although some of the audio is a bit 'tinny,' from the 1966 recording, the later recordings are solid, raw, and powerfully concise. This is a masterpiece of the beginnings of blue. All my friends are envious! Submitted by Lita (Anaheim, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
