JAZZ GROUP SWEATSHOP RELEASES FIRST ALBUM, OVERTIMEFather-Son Endeavor Takes Modern Jazz to New HeightsKatonah, NY-based jazz-funk ensemble Sweatshop recently debuted their spirited, groove-heavy debut Overtime. The album took six months to complete, and it was released through Sweatshop Studios’ own independent label. Edan Dover and his father Shaul Dover co-produced Overtime, with Shaul serving as engineer. Sweatshop leader and chief composer Edan Dover (also a jazz performance undergrad at New York University) showcases his unique songwriting talents on Overtime. Whether paying homage to jazz greats like Herbie Hancock on “Arch” and “Bangin’,” or playfully experimenting with 7/4 time signature on the earthy “Frappachino,” Overtime finds a happy medium between free-form aesthetics and a more solidly-arranged approach. Track six is a punchy Rhodes-and-sax rendition of Herbie Hancock’s classic “Cantaloupe.” And to get a feel for what this amorphous jazz group sounds like live, check out the three bonus live tracks, all fresh interpretations of jazz standards. The CD is now available online at CDBaby.com and iTunes, and an upcoming tour is in the works. With its joyful exploration of modern jazz arrangements, funkified instrumentation and unconventional time signatures, this eight-song album is sure to pique the ears of jazz fans in search of something different.Radio play (in addition to the reviews bellow):10/17/2006 "arch" from Sweat Shop Overtime on Radio Campus North of France www.campuslille.com "jazz à l'âme"10/18/2006 The Upper Room with Joe Kelley" WVOF 88.5 FM Fairfield, CT10/31/2006 Jazz Spaces Tuesdays 10PM-2AM94.1 FM Radio 2 Skopje, Macedonia11/2/2006 Artsound 92.7 FM, Thanks for an excellent CD, Lili.January 2007, CFBX 92.5 FM Kamloops, BC CANADATop 10 Jazz Albums Sweatshop – Overtime Overtime Music | List Price | $12.97 (You save $3.12) | | Category | Jazz Albums | | Label | CD Baby | | CD Universe Part number | 7282461 | | Catalog number | 99267 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Jul 25, 2006 |

Overtime CD music
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get ...

$13.59 This double-CD set is not only the best of Bill Chase's output but -- comprising all three of their albums -- virtually their complete finished studio work, before the plane crash that killed Chase and much of the group. The mastering on this Wounded Bird reissue is excellent, with a full solid bass sound topped by soaring highs on the brass and no compression to speak of. It's not as though this catalog has been overused, in terms of its master tape library -- apart from the hit "Get It On" -- but it's still good to know that the stuff has been well handled in terms of being digitalized. Additionally, the producers have reprinted Nat Hentoff's original essay about the group from their first album (and oh, for a time when college audiences could resonate to the writings of someone like Hentoff, ...

| | Dan Group Karlsberg Adventures Of The Dan Karlsberg Group CD (2007)
Overtime songs
$17.69 The debut CD by Cincinnati jazz musician Dan Karlsberg, "The Adventures of the Dan Karlsberg Group," is aptly titled. For over an hour, "Adventures" takes listeners on a dreamy, round-the-world journey of multicultural musical styles, from mystical Asian melodies to Chicago-cool and even a touch of classic folk music turned inside-out. The international influences heard on "Adventures" are not surprising, considering the diversity of the Dan Karlsberg Group. Karlsberg, a classically-trained pianist and composer, is Jewish. Drummer Anthony "T" Lee is African-American and is the nephew of jazz guitarist Wilbert Longmire. Bassist Steve Whipple is Japanese-American and the son of world-renowned Japanese organist Mamiko Iwasaki. "We have such different backgrounds," Karsberg says. "We grew up listening to different types of music, so we bring a wide range of influences to the table. As a group, we have developed our own unique style. We use form, tempo, and style as tools for improvisation, in addition to more traditional ways.” It is worth noting that "The Adventures of the Dan Karlsberg Group" marks the recording debut of guest vocalist Mica Darley, niece of the legendary singer Rosemary Clooney. Darley, who lives in Cincinnati, performs on two cuts, including one that she co-write with Karlsberg, entitled "Home in the 'Nati," one of five original compositions on the album. With such lyrics as, "When did winter come? I watch the walkers with their collars turned," the song is a poetic, stream-of-conscious celebration of life in Cincinnati. "Here I am unknown, but I am home," sings Darley, as Karlsberg accompanies her on his piano in a style reminiscent of Vince Guaraldi. Also guest-appearing on "The Adventures of the Dan Karlsberg Group" is flute and saxophone great Sandy Suskind. Suskind plays flute on four tracks, including “Magdelena's Musette,” a complex, three-part composition by Karlsberg, and the melancholy “Vielle Priere Bouddhique,” a piece Suskind introduced to Karlsberg by the great French composer Lili Boulanger. "Sandy Suskind has done a lot of amazing work, but I honestly believe that some of his best recorded playing is on this CD," Karlsberg says. While decidedly a jazz CD, “The Adventures of the Dan Karlsberg Group” draws from other musical genres, as well. There is, for example, a playful, nine-minute rendition of “Oh! Susanna” as the Stephen Foster classic has never been heard before – no banjo, no twang, just Karlsberg alternately ...
