MADATHENS/POP SCENE01Grabber rec. presents the compilation Athens Pop Scene 01, including the 12 best new up and coming bands that prove the fact that the new alternative scene is alive and kicking in Greece and they have nothing to be jealous of, in comparison with other international acts. The compilation tries to cover all the different tendencies in the local underground pop/rock spectrum. Most of the acts are in their early stage and they make their very first appearance in a recording release. Mad Club (a historical local hang out-venue) supported the whole effort by offering the chance to most of the bands to perform on its stage as part of a purpose designed series of events with the same name as the compilation. The events will keep on taking place and hopefully more compilations in the series will follow in the near future. The compilation is the second release of Graber rec, a label that functions as part of Rabber rec. The label aims to support the best guitar driven music on offer in Greece, and at the same time to create a whole scene with a particular personality and distinctive sound style, away from mainstream mediocrity. It seems like it would be easy to compile a definitive gospel box set, much like Rhino's definitive Doo Wop Box. After all, much classic gospel was never widely distributed and has been out of print for years, and many listeners would like one sweeping set that captures the best of the music. Still, the three-disc set Testify!: The Gospel Box suffers from two perennial Rhino curses: a desire to tell a full chronology and a yen for novelty. First, Testify runs from the beginning of the '40s to the end of the '90s. This is an enormous amount of time to consolidate into one set, especially when most casual fans of gospel (i.e., rock fans) have, at best, a passing interest in gospel recorded after the early '70s, which accounts for the last two discs of the set. To be sure, there's some great music on the first disc (covering recorded gospel's peak years), but it's marred by novelty tunes -- "Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition," "Stalin Wasn't Stallin'" -- that are of interest to collectors, but hardly provide the basic introduction that the set intends to provide. Disc two is devoted to music recorded in the '70s and early '80s; disc three picks up where that left off, taking listeners all the way to the end of the century. Some listeners may even want a set that runs through the history of recorded gospel, but Testify! isn't satisfying listening; it's merely a textbook, tracing the evolution of gospel. Instructive it may be, but like many textbooks, it doesn't bring the music to life, which is a sad irony for such a joyous music. ~ ...

We‘re an American-German BandPothead played their first live show in October 1991 in Berlin, Germany. Guitarist/vocalist Brad and bassist Jeff Dope, fellow Seattlites, arrived in Berlin as tourists that month. Drummer Sebastian Meyer, who was to join the band in February 1994, is from Olpe, near Cologne. Pothead's first record, USA (a collection of early demos), was released in 1993.It all began in early 1991 in Seattle. A few of us, friends in the local scene, were getting together to jam in the basement of our rented slacker-house at 717 Denny Way on Capitol Hill (now an apartment highrise). We were burned out on our puttering bands, but were rediscovering the joy of rocking thanks to those many Hefe Weizen-powered evenings.In July of 1991 we booked two four-hour sessions at Reciprocal recording studio in the Ballard district, hoping to capture some of that power on tape. Unfortunately, though we’d jammed plenty we hadn't really written any songs. As a result we wasted about half the first day trying to pull inspiration out of a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken. It was meant to be in tribute to Bachman Turner Overdrive, one of our childhood fave's. We'd heard they always ate KY-fried in the studio. But we just got stomach aches.Maybe it had provided some help, because we somehow managed to piece together five tunes in the remaining hours of our session. We also came up with a band name. While listening to the rough takes we were also brainstorming for a name to write on the edge of our Ampex tape box. Something like Motörhead. After a time someone shouted Pothead! Pure chance, of course.Goin' to EuropeOnly two weeks later Brad and Jeff packed their entire belongings into a storage locker. They were going camping in Europe with two friends from Bonn, still Germany‘s capitol at the time. The girls picked them up at the Amsterdam airport in a VW Golf they had rented for their vacation. The original plan was to drive through Yugoslavia to Greece. Prior to founding Spyplane, Todd & Josh played under the moniker International. That incarnation of the band self-released 3 EP Demos: International "Air", "Self Titled," and "Chummer." International transitioned into Spyplane. SPYPLANE self released a 12 song LP in the summer of 2003. Prior to that Todd played in a Boise band called Frosty in 95'-98. Josh played in a band called Postal Joe out of Moscow, ID during the same time period. Drummer Mike Rundle's past projects include: The Sleestacks, Stuntman (X-Treepeople) & King Salmon (X-Killdozer).
