Composer: Mark Isham. Director Brian de Palma told composer Mark Isham that what he was looking for in the background music for his neo-noir crime drama The Black Dahlia was "a mournful trumpet score," to which Isham replied, "I happen to be a mournful trumpet player." Isham brings his mournful trumpet to the soundtrack, playing it as part of lush, romantic themes that recall Gato Barbieri's flugelhorn in Last Tango in Paris and, especially, David Raksin's music for the 1944 noir classic Laura. But The Black Dahlia actually demands a lot more than that. It's a typical De Palma tale of plot twists, choreographed violence, and elaborate dramatic scenes. Isham proves up to the task of providing fairly typical music for all those aspects, writing for a 100-piece orchestra and managing to be moody and threatening as well as darkly lyrical. The score for The Black Dahlia is as referential of Hollywood past as the film for which it was written, but it also achieves some of the same kinds of variations and surprises. ~ William Ruhlmann Black Dahlia Soundtrack Music Black Dahlia Soundtrack Review

$11.89 Original Soundtrack/Cirque du Soleil: Julie McInnes (vocals, acoustic guitar, tiple, cello); Toumany Kouyate (vocals, kora); Roxanne Potvin (vocals, flute, percussion); Elise Guay (vocals, bagpipe, shawm, recorder, crumhorn); Lei Qiang (erhu); Jean-Francois Cote (accordion, keyboards, programming, sampler); Stephanie Gariepy (soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone, keyboards); Vovo (percussion, sound effects). It may well be true that the stage show of O is more lavish, creative, and spectacular than its older sister Mystere, but music has little to do with its overall appeal. One gets the feeling that the musical score took a backseat to the visual effects in the show -- and without any visual effects, the soundtrack is not as exciting as the live show. It is slow and pretty. Benoit Jutras used a light touch with the musical pyrotechnics and dramatic soundscapes that light up O. The album lulls the listener, and will no doubt serve as a pleasant reminder of the live performance. ~ L. | | Deni Hines Water For Chocolate CD (2006) (Import) Import; United Kingdom
Black Dahlia Soundtrack
$21.45 Deni Hines is without doubt considered one of Australia's foremost entertainers. From hit singles and albums, to lead roles in musicals & television, Deni has grown up in front of audiences from an enthusiastic young performer to a mature, sophisticated all round entertainer. Deni's career began when she was 15. Many performers have quirky or interesting stories of how they were discovered. Deni's story is simple - she was "discovered" singing to the radio in a friend's kitchen. Encouraged to pursue singing as a career, she began touring as a backing vocalist for the who's who of the Australian industry, including the likes of INXS & Kylie Minogue. It wasn't until Deni began working with The Rockmelons that her true potential began to emerge. As lead vocalist on a string of hit singles, Deni was touted as "the next big thing". The hits - "That Word (L.O.V.E), "It's Not Over" and the hugely successful - "Aint No Sunshine" all became Top 10 smashes, with Deni becoming one of the most well known faces, and voices, in Australia. Fast forward a few years later and Deni released her debut album "Imagination". Signed to Mushroom Records, Deni spent 9 months recording for her debut release in the UK with writer/producer Ian Green. The first single from the album, "Its Alright" smashed into the charts at ..4, ensuring her first solo hit with a platinum award. Further hit singles including "I Like the Way"& "Joy" solidified Deni as a solo star in her own right, and Deni deservedly received an ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association) Award for Best Australian Debut Performance. The album went on to sell over 300,000 in Japan alone, while the ...
| | Desperate Man Blues Discovering The Roots Desperate Man Blues: Discovering The Roots Of American Music CD (2006)
Black Dahlia Soundtrack
$13.35 Liner Note Authors: Joe Bussard; Bruce Elder. In conjunction with the 2006 DVD documentary of record collector Joe Bussard, Dust-to-Digital released this companion CD, featuring 19 tracks in some of the kind of styles -- rural blues, jazz, and old-timey country music, mostly from the '20s and '30s -- that Bussard loves. Desperate Man Blues: Discovering the Roots of American Music isn't exactly a soundtrack to the documentary, since these records are not featured in their entirety in that film. Rather, it's a survey of some of the highlights of the music in which Bussard specializes, the liner notes featuring track-by-track annotation by Bussard himself. It's an excellent mixture of classics by some of the most esteemed early country and blues giants and ...
