Reggae Meets R&B/Hiphop album
$14.30 Just half a year from the release of the mysteriously unauthorized catalog clearinghouse/label kiss off Murder Was the Case, Gucci Mane returns with The State vs. Radric Davis, his latest on Warner Bros.' Asylum imprint. True to form, the bling-loving rapper brings the club-ready Dirty South rap, complete with trunk-rattling bass and trademark synths. Featuring production by Drumma Boy, Mannie Fresh, Shawty Redd, and Scott Storch, amongst others, it's no surprise that the album is able to perfectly capture the low and slow Southern sound. Some of the best beats come by way of Bangladesh (producer on the Lil Wayne single "A Milli"), who drops some seriously roll slowing Atlanta heat on "Stupid Wild" and "Lemonade." The all-star roster doesn't just stop on the production side. Soulja Boy Tell `Em, Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, and Bun B (as well as countless others) drop in with guest verses, culminating in an album that's so jam-packed with Dirty South royalty that it almost feels a little light on Gucci Mane. While the galaxy of guest stars has become commonplace in the rap world, it's Gucci's solo songs that paint a picture of ...

| | BirdMan Pricele$$ CD (2009) Deluxe Edition
Reggae Meets R&B/Hiphop music CDs
$15.34 He may be a veteran rapper, but by 2009, Birdman was better known and more active as a label owner, mostly because he was the label owner, manager, and mentor of hip-hop superstar Lil Wayne. As such, Birdman's Pricele$$ doesn't display a new set of skills when it comes to rapping and writing, but it does present the stone-cold millionaire as a more assured man, extremely comfortable to be on top and in charge of the now innovative and interesting Cash Money. If Birdman doesn't take lyrical chances, Wayne and Cash Money upstart Drake are more than willing, making tracks like "Money to Blow," "Bring it Back," and the Timbaland-produced title cut all highlights. Edgier production from the current in-house stable of producers helps too, and even if Birdman is stuck on money, money, and more money, musical detours into the world of dance music ("I Want It All") and T-Pain's brand of ultra-glossy R&B ("Shinin") keep the album from feeling stagnant. Not startling but satisfying and worth the attention of the Cash Money faithful. ~ David Jeffries

| | Anthony Braxton Ninetet (Yoshi's) 1997, Vol. 3 CDs (2005)
Reggae Meets R&B/Hiphop CD music
$30.59 Released 15 months after Vol. 2, this two-CD set continues to document the Anthony Braxton Ninetet's six-night residency at Yoshi's. "Composition No. 211" and "Composition No. 212" (each 55 minutes long) were both performed on August 21, 1997. Because of the range of arrangements it offers in a format relatively easy to keep together, the Ninetet is turning into Braxton's ultimate Ghost Trance Music-era group, in the light of these recordings. The (shifting) triple-trio configuration, the quality of the musicianship, and the creativity developed from "Composition No. 207" through "Composition No. 218" will make this series one of the essential documents of GTM. As on the previous night, the most immediate difference between the first and the second pieces is Kevin Norton's role. In "211," he sticks exclusively to marimba and vibraphone, while in "212" he is mostly behind the drum kit. The first piece is the strongest one of the two. Braxton, Brandon Evans, and J.D. Parran form a flute trio at one point which, coupled with Norton's vibes, takes listeners into unusually velvety pastures. The pulse is marvelously sustained, producing ...
| | Ghislain Poirier Rebondir CD (2006) Extended Play
Reggae Meets R&B/Hiphop music CDs
$7.19 Canadian DJ Ghislain Poirier, who has one of the best shows in Montreal, a monthly gig at the club Zoobizarre called Bounce le Gros (which is a more polite way of saying "bounce your big ass"), and has already released a handful of solo albums, has also just started his own label, Rebondir Records, for which Rebondir EP is the first release. For an EP, it's a pretty decent length, with nine songs, and only one is a remix ("Robe de Chambre," featuring rappers Omnikrom). Poirier is definitely in full club mode on Rebondir (in the best of senses), with thick, meandering ...
