Fairytales And Reality album
$17.39 Bassist Smith (not the drummer of the same name) presents a straight piano-bass-drums jazz trio, but the music is far from straight-ahead, though it is within the modern mainstream. Pianist Richie Beirach adds both new dimensions and his personal harmonic mysterioso embellishments to four of Smith's originals, three standards, and two zingers. Drummer Billy Hart sounds more inspired here than on any previous recordings. His punctuations and shadings are fresh as ever, working extraordinarily well with Smith, whose deliberate, patient, unspectacular bottom tones provide the coal for Beirach's sulfur and Hart's diamonds. The result is a gunpowder fuse to blast open your ears. The most remarkable selections of the nine are three standards revamped by Beirach, for the most part. His abstracted "Stella by Starlight," loaded with chord substitutions, cannot be explained. A willowy, dark bossa with repetitive piano chords changes up "All the Things You Are," and a heavier ten-fingered Beirach complements and overpowers the ...

Fairytales And Reality CD music
$18.05 When headbanger historians look back on the important heavy metal and hard rock bands that were active during the '70s, Mahogany Rush's name doesn't come up nearly as often as Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Kiss, Van Halen, Judas Priest, Blue Öyster Cult or Aerosmith -- and that is regrettable because Frank Marino led one of the '70s' most exciting hard rock/metal outfits. Mahogany Rush is, without question, underrated. Walk past a Hard Rock Café, and it isn't uncommon to hear Zep's "Whole Lotta Love" or Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water" being blasted -- but how often will a Hard Rock Café expose pedestrians to something by Mahogany Rush? Regardless, Marino still has his share of die-hard followers who will be happy to know that Mahogany Rush is in fine form on Real Live. Recorded live at Club Soda in Montreal, Canada on September 8, 2001 (only three days before the 9/11 terrorist attacks), this two-CD set doesn't break any new ground for Marino -- who sticks with the sort of Jimi Hendrix-influenced hard rock, heavy metal, blues-rock and psychedelic rock he was providing 30 years earlier. Marino's refusal to change with the times is just as well ...
| | Manny Albam Jazz Workshop CD (1955) (Import) Bonus Tracks; France
Fairytales And Reality music CDs
$9.85 As an arranger and bandleader, the works of Manny Albam seem better appreciated by jazz musicians than by record labels and the jazz-buying public. This RCA Victor LP collects three separate octets recorded over the span of a few days in December 1955, divided evenly between Albam's swinging originals and imaginative charts of standards ("Anything Goes") and oldies like "Black Bottom" and "Charmaine." The band is anchored by bassist Milt Hinton and drummer Osie Johnson, with a rotating cast of soloists who include Bob Brookmeyer, Urbie Green, Hank Jones, Al Cohn, Hal McKusick, and Joe Newman, among others. At least French RCA Victor made this valuable date available on LP for a time during the 1970s, but it has long since lapsed from print, and will be tough to locate, like far too many records by Manny Albam. ~ Ken Dryden

| | Hammerfall Threshold CD (2006)
Fairytales And Reality album
$13.69 Following the unnaturally extended layoff enforced by guitarist Oscar Dronjak's motorcycle accident in 2003, Swedish heavy metal traditionalists Hammerfall waited barely a year between their eventual return with fifth album, Chapter V in 2005, and the release of LP number six, Threshold, in 2006. This suddenly rushed release schedule -- though likely resulting from nothing more than a backlog of pre-written material, ready to come out -- takes something of an uncertain turn on Threshold's first few numbers, which comprise a decent but terribly predictable title track; a lackluster autopilot job and a repetitive chorus in "The Fire Burns Forever"; and a lead-footed crawl through "Rebel Inside," which not even Accept-like choral battalions can jolt into life. Indeed, the claim may be redundant when relating to a band whose very talents involve being true to metal's classic sound, but all three ...

Fairytales And Reality songs
$14.15 Lowlife followed up the strong if slightly monolithic Permanent Sleep with a more varied release, Diminuendo. Continuing to explore a darkly dramatic but never overwrought vein of post-punk atmospherics, the quartet, unchanged in lineup from its earliest releases, built beautifully on the past to further justify their increasing reputation in the U.K. "A Sullen Sky," the striking opening song, showed that even with a subtle change in the arrangements -- a touch more clarity on Craig Lauritson's echoed vocals, the hint of swooping drone keyboards in the background, a little more space overall -- the end results had that much more impact. With that as a calling card the quartet tackled the rest of the nine songs with gusto, with experiments including acoustic guitar ("Big Uncle Ugliness") and an almost Smiths-like peppier jangle (at least initially!) on "Wonders Will Never Cease." The essential blend of the band remains strong, though, and on songs like "Off Pale Yellow," with its beautiful cascading verses, and the concluding demi-ballad "Given to Dreaming" the evidence is perfectly clear. Each of the individual members further stretches their own talents along the way -- Grant McDowell's drumming shows more variety throughout, for instance, while Lauritson adds quick, higher pitched flourishes here and there that lighten the stormclouds in a striking fashion. The secret winner of the album might be "Licking One's Wounds," with each of the bandmembers trying for a little something different yet still sounding exactly like ...
