Following his tenure in pioneering German metal band the Scorpions and U.K. hard rockers UFO, guitarist Michael Schenker formed his own band with singer Gary Barden, debuting with 1980's MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP, featuring the single "Cry for the Nations."
After his lengthy stints with the Scorpions and UFO, Michael Schenker could be forgiven for indulging his incendiary fretboard skills throughout the entirety of this 1980 solo debut. Instead, it's a solid group effort that has aged surprisingly well, with Schenker artfully deploying his talents on full-bodied hard rock outings such as the opening "Armed and Ready" and the riff-heavy "Victim of Illusion." Vocalist Gary Barden proves himself more than able to withstand Schenker's pyrotechnics, while the whole enterprise is propelled by the remarkable percussive dexterity of the veteran British drummer Simon Phillips.
The concept may seem patently absurd, but guitarists were held in such high regard during the late '70s and early '80s that many elite players were given to tantrums and notions of self-worship usually reserved only for singers and divas. And maybe no one better exemplified this six-string megalomania than German guitarist Michael Schenker, whose turbulent flights of emotional fancy had already earned him the "Mad Michael" nickname during his mercurial tenure with Brit rockers UFO. Of course, this behavior simply went into overdrive when the guitar legend launched the Michael Schenker Group with a 1980 self-titled album, which was at times as unstable as the man himself. Witness the downright weird, Jimmy Buffet-like calypso melodies that introduce "Cry for the Nations" or the absurd title bestowed upon the delicate solo guitar piece "Bijou Pleasurette." But fear not, as for the most part the album is dominated by straightforward hard rockers very much in the UFO vein. Highlights like "Looking Out from Nowhere" and "Lost Horizons" are laced with the pomp and bombast typical of the era, and storming opener "Armed and Ready" is arguably Schenker's finest solo track. Vocalist Gary Barden wisely stays out of the way, his understated style (not unlike that of UFO singer Phil Mogg) placing all emphasis where it is intended: Schenker's stunning axe work. In spite of its random quirks, the general consensus among fans holds that this remains the MSG's best work. [Toshiba EMI's 2006 reissue included bonus tracks.] ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

Michael Schenker Group album
$30.75 These anthemic Brit rockers weren't able to scale the heights as, say, Led Zep or Aerosmith, but they managed to make a whole bunch of beautiful noise nonetheless. This reissue of their 1978 album features "Only You Can Rock Me," "Born To Lose," and "Cherry."
UFO had finally fulfilled their potential with 1977's exceptional hard rock tour de force, LIGHTS OUT, and released another prime slice of heavy metal just one year later, OBSESSION. While most '70s Euro-metal bands such as Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, etc., dealt largely with doom and gloom, UFO proved to have more in common with such US melodic hard rockers as Van Halen.
OBSESSION proved to be UFO's most successful studio album ever, on the strength of such hard rocking highlights as "Only You Can Rock Me" and "Ain't No Baby." Even though guitarist Michael Schenker again pushes the songs to the limit here with his superb playing, OBSESSION would prove to be his ...

The question on the minds of most Michael Schenker fans is usually this -- when will he ever finally get his due? Apparently, the German axeman is practically the Rodney Dangerfield of metal. He's somehow managed to anchor two of the most important bands in the lineage of the genre and influence everyone from Metallica to Powerman 5000, and yet, while he continues have a rabid fan base writhing away in the shadows and is still widely recognized in countries like Japan where technical prowess is highly prized, he remains relatively unknown to American audiences. It is perhaps not fair that his clones have outsold him many times over and enjoy popular positions on the mantle place of rock & roll, but then again, if influence translated into acclaim, wouldn't so many countless others from Phil Ochs to Nick Drake or even Big Star be better off as well? In any case, though Schenker's efforts with UFO will always be the crux of his legacy, the Michael Schenker Group's One Night at Budokan is an excellent starting point for his solo ...

$35.85 BUILT TO DESTROY, 1983's nine-track explosion from The Michael Schenker Group, is powered by the hard-rocking tracks "Rock My Nights Away" and "Dogs of War."
Built to Destroy was not much different than MSG's previous effort, Assault Attack, except that Gary Barden replaced Graham Bonnet on lead vocals. Michael Schenker's steady musicianship usually lifted his sometimes mediocre solo efforts into at least the listenable ...

Michael Schenker Group album
$9.25 Vince Neil at the Whisky. It may not be the Beatles at the Star Club -- or even Otis Redding at the Whisky -- but it has weight, a sense of history, and purpose. The Whisky was one of Mötley Crüe's mainstays, so when the singer returns for a show and a souvenir live album years later, it should be an event. It's not. It's an oldies show, a Crüe revue performed by the man himself. Even Vince Neil knows that nobody comes to see him to hear his solo songs. He knocks out "Look in Her Eyes" (remember that? The first tune on his first solo record) early in the show, devoting himself to the Nikki Sixx songbook for the rest of the record, hitting most of the big tunes: "Kick Start My Heart," "Home Sweet Home," "Looks That Kill," and "Dr. Feelgood," among them, of course, along with the de rigeur cover of Brownsville Station's "Smokin' in the Boysroom." Though there are some songs that are firmly for the die-hard fans -- fan favorites and album tracks like "Knock 'Em Dead, Kid" are revived -- this still plays like an oldies show with all the schtick that entails, including a flirtation with medleys, as he has "Girls Girls Girls" slide into "Same Ol' Situation." Neil sometimes is in thin voice, stretching the limits of his upper register, and, on record ...
