By 2006, country music's eternal sweetheart, Barbara Mandrell, was a little bit out of the spotlight. This loving tribute album places her back in her rightful place, with reverent and straightforward covers of her best material. While most of the arrangements replicate the originals almost exactly (albeit with powerhouse singers like Gretchen Wilson, Shelby Lynn, and Terri Clark at the mic), there are some nice surprises: LeAnn Rimes turns in a sultry and soulful reading of "If Loving You Is Wrong, I Don't Wanna Be Right," and Dierks Bentley reworks the sprightly "Fast Lanes & Country Roads" into a pistol-hot outlaw country rocker.

| | Brooks & Dunn Greatest Hits Collection II CD (2004)
She Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool CD music
$9.75 There's no denying that Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn ruled the pop/country roost throughout the 1990s, but this second volume of Brooks & Dunn hits shows that the phenomenally successful duo kept chugging along well beyond their early-'90s heyday. It's mainly occupied by tracks from the late '90s and early 2000s, interspersed with a few new bonus cuts to keep the faithful on board. Those who've kept up with the twosome's ...

| | Ty Herndon Right About Now CD (2007)
She Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool album
$14.59 Country singer Ty Herndon is back in the studio after a six-year break. Yeah, there was a Christmas record a couple of years back, but this is the first time the Meridian, Mississippi wonder has done an honest to goodness modern country record in nearly seven years. Herndon hit the charts and the road in a fury during the mid-'90s, and his demons hit back hard. Right: Herndon had a hellhound on his trail. Right About Now is one of those records that a man makes when he feels he has everything to prove. On the Jackson/Titan independent label (which is distributed by Fontana), Herndon lays out 11 new songs with help from songwriters like producer Darrell Brown, Keith Urban, Jess Cates, Beth Nielsen Chapman and others. The opener, written by Brown, Radney Foster, and Urban is a downtempo modern country rocker turned personal anthem. Herndon's voice is not only unchanged from his missing years, it's stronger, his phrasing is tighter and more expressive, and his manner of handling a song is entirely his own. "You Still Own Me" opens with a fiddle and a banjo and a shuffling snare. It's modern country at its best. This is one of those ...

A four-disc box set of all new material, nearly all of it Gill originals, THESE DAYS is possibly the widest-ranging country album of ...

| | Blackburn & Snow Something Good For Your Head CD (1999) (Import) United Kingdom
She Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool songs
$16.65 Although Blackburn & Snow were probably not allowed to reach their full potential due to various problems (not the least of them being a lack of record releases), this collection of 20 1966-67 recordings is only a little below the first tier of mid-1960s American folk-rock in quality. "Stranger in a Strange Land" is a highlight and probably could have been a big hit. Almost on the same level are melodic Blackburn originals that could be ebullient ("Yes Today," "It's So Hard," "Every Day Brings Better Things"), spookily sad and folky ("Takin' It Easy," "Some Days I Feel You Lovin'"), or both high-spirited ...
