Adapting Thelonious Monk's idiosyncratic works for a septet without piano is no mean feat, but Ben Riley, the legendary pianist's drummer for five years, does a remarkable job on this collection of classic Monk tunes, which includes a cascading version of "Bemsha Swing" and a sprightly jaunt through the thickets of "Gallop's Gallop." The group's arrangements add a surprising heft to numbers like "Rhythm-A-Ning" and "Epistrophy," while preserving the innate delicacy of pieces like "Pannonica."

| | Dizzy Gillespie Town Hall, New York City, June 22, 1945 CD (2005)
Memories Of T CD music
$13.79 The historic live Town Hall sessions by Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker from 1945 have been discovered on an acetate pressing, and are transferred with digital enhancement to CD. Why this concert was not issued initially is understandable, but Ira Gitler's informative and insightful liner notes suggest they likely were misplaced. What Gitler's essential writing also reveals is that these dates were approximate by only weeks to the original studio recordings of these classics, and there was no small amount of controversy surrounding this revolutionary bebop. Clearly bop was a vehicle for intricate melodic invention followed by lengthy soloing, aspects of which Parker with Gillespie were perfectly suited for. Fact is, the situation surrounding the sonic capture and extended neglected shelf ...

| | Mccoy Tyner Quartet CD (2007)
Memories Of T album
$13.49 McCoy Tyner's work with the John Coltrane Quartet is well documented, and this CD marks a welcome return to that format. Recorded live at Yoshi's in Oakland, CA, over New Year's, Joe Lovano does the honors in the tenor sax chair, while bassist Christian McBride and drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts hold the rhythm section together with honor, passion, and drive. The world-class bassist and drummer, usually known for their overt showmanship and over the top chops, show remarkable restraint and sensitivity throughout. Tyner and friends play several of his original compositions, well-known and revered over ...
