Reissued after the success of 2006's SILENT SHOUT, the Knife's '03 album, DEEP CUTS, is more dance-oriented than its dark, moody successor. While the wonderful quirks of the Swedish brother/sister electronica duo--namely distorted vocals and prominent synth lines--are present, they are often used in shimmering, club-ready contexts, as on the vibrant "Heartbeats" (later covered by indie-folk performer Jose Gonzalez) and "You Take My Breath Away," which skates along nimbly on a sheet of icy beats. If DEEP CUTS is a night out on the dance floor, SILENT SHOUT is the chilling, shadow-filled walk home, making the former the more accessible and lighthearted of the two albums.
The Knife: Olof Dreijer, Karin Dreijer.
Additional personnel: Jenny Wilson, Kalle Lekholm.

Deep Cuts album
$13.05 The 2005 Stateside release of the debut album by Norwegian singer Annie was a while in the works. Her first single, the gleaming, Madonna-sampling "Greatest Hit" came out in 1999, and became an underground hit, after which Annie began work with a host of producers to put together her 12-track full-length. The results were worth the wait. A lush, carefully prepared banquet of electronic dance pop, ANNIEMAL includes elements of IDM, Top 40 girl pop, early-'80s underground dance, and contemporary club music, all synthesized in a way that, in addition to seeming nearly effortless, is immediately appealing.
The lead-off track, "Chewing Gum," is a case in point. The bright, sing-song chorus is buoyed by a bouncing, mid-tempo groove that recalls Tom Tom Club's "Genius of Love" and is no ...

Deep Cuts CD music
$8.99 FALLING INTO YOU won the 1997 Grammy Awards for Album Of The Year and Best Pop Album. "Because You Loved Me," written by Diane Warren, won the 1997 Grammy for Best Song Written Specifically For A Motion Picture Or For Television. "Because You Loved Me" was also nominated for Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
With a powerful set of pipes and some killer romantic ballads, Celine Dion is back in full force on this much-anticipated disc. The woman who previously hit it huge in the U.S. with 1991's "Beauty And The Beast" knows how to belt out a song, and then some. FALLING INTO YOU is full of lovely pop ballads, big production and soaring chord changes. Throw in some stadium-ready guitar parts, and it becomes definitive "power love" music. These combined elem

| | Peter Cetera CD (1981)
Deep Cuts songs
$9.69 Having tasted success with Chicago throughout the '70s, Peter Cetera decided to launch his solo career at the dawn of the '80s with this ten-track exercise in rock. In an immediate departure from the successfully safe formula Chicago utilized to exhaustion, Cetera employed a stellar crew of guest artists to reinforce that this was his project. The Beach Boys' Carl Wilson and Ricky Fataar make guest appearances, as does Toto wunderkind Steve Lukather, to complement Cetera's distinctive voice and bass playing. They waste no time in getting going with the rocker "Livin' in the Limelight," which features Lukather delivering ...
| | Hot Young Priest Fiendish Freaky Love CD (2006)
Deep Cuts album
$9.75 At its surface, Atlanta's Hot Young Priest is infectious. The tightly-wound trio sonically embodies a constant struggle of give-and-take, where a stark melodious arrangement often erupts into snarling chaos at a moment's notice. The din is topped by Mary Byrne's vocals, which also run the gamut from childlike naivety to haggard cynicism. Comparisons to Carol van Dijk (of Bettie Serveert) or early P.J. Harvey are inevitable, though the band's visceral sound stands on its own merits.Peel the songs back a few layers, and the astute listener will ...
