2006's HOLLINNDAGAIN is a re-release of Animal Collective's rare live album composed of tracks recorded for the radio station WFMU in 2001and live tracks from the band's tour from the same year. HOLLINNAGAIN presents a fascinating portrait of one of the 21st century's most relentlessly inventive indie rock bands at a time when they were committed to creating fresh improvisations for every concert.
The first three tracks are taken from the radio show, and the remainder is culled from band's tour with fellow experimental warriors Black Dice. The sound is looser in structure and approach than the band displayed on later albums like SUNG TONGS and FEELS (although, intriguingly, the album has been mixed so ghosts of songs from these albums can occasionally be heard). Instead AC favor sprawling free-form jams built on found sounds, ambient noise, and experimental singing punctuated by furious tribal drumming and flashes of melody. Fans interested in the band's genesis, and their remarkably free and searching live approach, should pick this up.

Spin (p.96) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "The three campfire prayers taped at radio station WFMU cackle with melancholic, mouth-foaming euphoria." CMJ (p.36) - "[P]ulsing with ambitions....[With] frenetic guitar squalls and open spaces of incongruous ambient drones." Animal Collective Hollinndagain Songs Hollinndagain Review

$13.15 From the goofy, fluttering phrasing of "Who Could Win a Rabbit" to the lilting harmonies in "College" (which could easily be an outtake from the Beach Boys' PET SOUNDS), Animal Collective oozes with a starry-eyed, back-to-childhood sensibility. But like anyone's youth, SUNG TONGS is full of monsters and things that go bump in the night. The ominous backwards voices in "Visiting Friends" and the thumping tribal menace of "We Tigers" leave little doubt that Animal ...

$12.15 Outsider music's crossover cover boys take a giant step towards mainstream accessibility with this album--then jump right over it into the bushes. Having garnered the highest freak honors with their previous album, SUNG TONGS, here they expand from two to four members and take their chirpy call-and-response harmonies ...
| | Sufjan Stevens Avalanche: Outtakes & Extras From The Illinois Album CD (2006)
Hollinndagain
$12.45 Primarily recorded in late 2005/early '06, THE AVALANCHE serves as a companion piece to Sufjan Stevens's lauded ILLINOIS, and shares the brightly melodic chamber-pop sound of that earlier release. On this 21-track offering, the Brooklyn-based indie-rock hero revisits his lilting "Chicago" on three different occasions, most notably an acoustic version that showcases Stevens's folk leanings. The gentle-voiced ...

Hollinndagain
$9.19 Thomas Dolby's irreverent 1988 release, ALIENS ATE MY BUICK, returns on this reissue from Holland.
Thomas Dolby didn't do his career much good by waiting four years between album releases. Pop music trends shifted away from the quirky synth-pop Dolby had pioneered in 1983-1984, and though he employed a heavy funk beat ...
| | Cosmic Rough Riders Too Close To See Far CD (2003) (Import) Bonus Track; Japan
Hollinndagain
$40.75 TOO CLOSE TO SEE FAR is a 2003 release by Scottish country-rockers the Cosmic Rough Riders.
Despite accolades for the Cosmic Rough Riders' masterful 2000 debut, Enjoy the Melodic Sunshine, the band's vocalist and principal songwriter, Daniel Wylie, exited the Glasgow outfit, leaving the remaining members with the difficult task of crafting a suitable follow-up. If hopes were low, the harmony-laden Too Close to See Far well exceeds expectations to become not just a respectable follow-up, but a delightful album you'll be drawn to again and again. Guitarist Stephen Fleming sounds at ease with his promotion to frontman on tuneful, harmony-laden numbers like "Justify the Rain" and "For a Smile," that -- like the first single, "Because of You" -- pay homage to fellow Scots Teenage Fanclub. Like TFC, there are elements of the "B" bands (the Byrds, Big Star, and the Beach Boys) on most of the tracks here. At times, Fleming's pipes can sound anonymous, making "Kill the Time" and "Life in Wartime" sound like they could be segments of the same song, but in large part CRR triumphs. They're obviously not the band they once were, but with real gumption and the previously unheard, introspective direction of "Tomorrow May Never Come" to build on, the Cosmics are here to stay. ~ John D. Luerssen
