To call the second full-length from French Toast a departure would be an understatement. To say the least. From the first few bars of the opening track, "The Letter," this almost feels like a totally different band. While the addition of Ben Gilligan probably has a lot to do with the development, the elements that made their debut a solid ride are still in the fore, suggesting a band that -- regardless of member additions -- is progressing rather than resting. While the debut In a Cave was a stark, early-'80s-mood-meets-21st-century-approach affair, Ingleside Terrace feels like a jump through time. Elements of Pavement's brand of melody, late-'80s American underground rock, and more recent electronic styling all mixed together result in a playful, driving rock & roll record that manages to add fuel to the argument that nothing beats a power trio. While In a Cave sidled up to the more chill and distant aspects of new wave and post-punk, Ingleside Terrace -- in both its production sensibility and songwriting -- takes that and adds a bit of swagger, a bit of soul. If In a Cave (perhaps purposely) felt like a small room, Ingleside Terrace feels like moving landscapes and wide horizons. An impressive follow-up to an impressive debut. ~ Christopher M. True

| | Kinks BBC Sessions 1964-1977 CDs (2001)
Ingleside Terrace
$15.09 Digitally remastered by Ray Davies & Andy Pearce (January 2001, Masterpiece).
Is it possible that the early Kinks could be even rawer and more exciting in BBC halls than on their known Pye Records recordings? Sometimes yes, otherwise very nearly. A few of these -- notably a breathless rave-up of Bo Diddley's "Cadillac" -- are indeed even more spark-ridden than the LP versions. Most of the merely curious will delight in new looks at the punishing stomp of the original blockbuster 1964 hits "You Really Got Me" and "All Day and All the Night." Likewise, this is like hearing "Tired of Waiting," "Till the End of the Day," "Days," and a faster-paced "Love Me 'Til the Sun Shines" for the first time, the feeling is still so powerful in such fresh looks at seminal creations. And for the ardent fan, it's the procession of little differences and inspired takes that quietly push the tingle buttons -- especially as one gets deeper into disc one. You note an unexpected piano on "Waterloo Sunset" by Nicky Hopkins, on a louder version that's as unusual as it is different from the 1967 pinnacle hit. And how about that deeper guitar chime on the pioneering Eastern flavor of "See My Friends"? Those who bought the bootlegs always raved about the great, lost, unreleased pop gem "Strange Effect"; this is the only Kinks version, yet its been covered ...

Ingleside Terrace
$42.05 "Thank U" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
Japanese version features the bonus demo track "City Of Angels."
Alanis has a lot to answer for; in the process of changing the face of '90s pop music, she opened the door to scores of inferior imitators who crowded the charts with their transparent careerist fury. What they missed was the renegade spirit that lurks beneath Morissette's statements off vengeance and dissatisfaction. ...

| | GOLLUM Lesser Traveled Waters CD (2004)
Ingleside Terrace
$7.95 GOLLUM - review highlights and excerpts"Super-ultra-mega complex in structure and style, this one takes a few listens to grasp but once it takes root, may never grow old. Equally as tortured and biomechanical as it is free-flowing and organic... rapes ears with a low-end gut-punch that's almost entirely instrumental outside of its haunting samples and guest appearances...Gollum have coughed up a wholly satisfying 46-minute release filled with chugging low-end sub-death metal, paranoid post-doom and apocalyptic melody. Get this." - Dave Brenner, Metal Maniacs Jan 05 issue."I have been listening to Gollum all this week and I have to say this shit kicks ass my man! This is a great album and I couldn't be more behind it!!! It is total sick...this shit destroys!!" - Steve Austin, Today is the Day "Conceptually and musically, Gollum have captured a true individuality and originality that through their trance inducing surrealist atmospherics, move them far beyond the planes of space and time. An original entity all to themselves, Gollum should be highly praised for their effort in pushing their artistic talent and creativity to acheive something great and lasting such as this. Lesser Traveled Waters is highly recommended." - Jeramy Ponder, Jackal Blaster. "Gollum's Lesser Traveled Waters might just be one of the most unique metal CD's I have heard in quite some time. Sort of like a weird combination of death metal, stoner/doom metal, thrash, and a dose of psychedelic prog, the four fellows in this North Carolina band certainly get major points for doing something different, as the eleven tracks here of mostly instrumental brutality are chock full of more killer guitar riffs and grooves than most bands with twice the track record can muster" - Pete Pardo, Sea Of Tranquility. "...What Gollum does well is combine copious amounts of riffage with synth, programming, and samples that move swiftly through the bloodstream. Hunter Holland's drumming pulverizes with foot speed and induces seizures with the fervor of an octopus on speed...we're beginning to see groups like Gollum retaining the heaviness ...

Ingleside Terrace
$15.19 "Lore of the Land" marks Sonic Explorers' fourth release on their own independent label, Nada Brahma Records. Led by Boston trumpeter and composer Jerry Sabatini, the group performs original music combining modern jazz and other American music styles with ethnic Balkan and Eastern European folk music. Sabatini was recently recognized as a finalist by the Massachusetts Cultural Council for compositions featured on this CD in the MCC 2007 Music Composition Awards. This CD features the band in quartet and quintet settings. The players are:Jerry Sabatini - trumpet, Rich Ardizone - trombone,Phil Sargent - guitar; John Funkhouser - bass, Mike Connors - drums."We've been playing most of the material on this record at live shows for several years now," explains Sabatini, the group's leader, "and so we're real comfortable with everything about performing it. To press a CD of this music was difficult in the sense that since it is so highly improvised that every take of the same tune was radically different, and so choosing a quintisential version became almost impossible. My main goal with this recording was that in contrast ...
