Therapy Sessions Volume Three album
$12.55 It differs little from his previous releases, but Paul Van Dyk's The Politics of Dancing, Vol. 2 is a satisfying argument that trance isn't dead and not even on life support. One bit of newness is the speed at which Van Dyk discards tracks on disc ...

| | Waltz For Koop: Alternative Takes CD (2003)
Therapy Sessions Volume Three album
$13.95 The first two records from Koop appeared with little fanfare, but the group's profile increased substantially after the release of the second, thanks to many glowing reviews, release on a label (Compost) often worshipped by beat fans, and the presence of a single (the title track) so otherworldly that the only reference points were elusive paragons of the genre such as Portishead and Lamb. Before the Swedish duo returned for a third album, they delivered Waltz for Koop: Alternative Takes, a title with great significance. Though superficially this is an album of remixes, similar to that delivered by dozens of independent-minded dance or experimental bands, this record works on its own like few other remix albums ever have -- and even rivals the quality of the original. Including one version of each track from Waltz for Koop, it evinces careful pacing and great work by an excellent cast of remixers. Among the names sure to make dance fans salivate are Domu and Agent K, Richard Dorfmeister, and Nicola Conte; the latter reworks "Tonight" by adding a speedy drum'n'bass rhythm and the talents of a quartet of Italian jazz musicians, including a fluid solo by tenor Daniele Scannapieco. Most of these reversions, however, come from obscure talents, often Swedish; Markus Enochson's remix of "Summer Sun" takes the prize, drawing out the original to nearly twice its length. The only misstep is a version of the title track, given a rolling drum'n'bass remix with twingy bass by DJ Patife (helped ...
| | #1 Def Jam Spot CD (2005)
Therapy Sessions Volume Three CD music
$12.65 A label that bases a compilation on its number one singles seems like it's more concerned with patting itself on the back than giving the consumer something useful. In Def Jam's case, #1 Spot serves both causes. Arranged in chronological order covering nearly 20 years, the disc begins with Oran "Juice" Jones' equally dramatic and gut-busting "The Rain" (an inspiration R. Kelly should've thought about taking more to heart for the "Trapped in the Closet" saga) and closes with Ludacris' hulking "Stand Up," the only inclusion with no discernible connection to R&B. Each selection hit the top of Billboard's R&B/Hip-Hop chart (a handful did as well on the Pop chart), but there's a definite slant toward the more relaxed side of R&B and pop-rap. After LL Cool J's "I Need Love," the track that follows "The Rain," the disc skips ahead eight years to Montell Jordan's "This Is How We Do It," and from there, the disc rolls through singles from the late '90s and early 2000s, when Def Jam was becoming known for R&B as much as raw hip-hop. (Who could've predicted back in the mid-'80s that the label would go through such a transformation?) The chronological sequencing and stylistic focus -- best exemplified by the back-to-back Neptunes productions, LL Cool J's "Luv U Better" and Jay-Z's "Excuse Me Miss" -- makes the disc that much easier to listen to from beginning to end. ~ Andy Kellman
