(20 Customer Reviews)
Many rappers claim to be a "real O.G.," like Gucci Mane does on "Everybody Know Me" from HARD TO KILL, his sophomore effort. Considering that HARD TO KILL dropped after a year that saw Mane defending himself against murder charges and doing some hard time, the reality of this Atlanta MC's life can actually back up his lyrical claims. Legal troubles aside, HARD TO KILL boasts gritty street stories, hard rhymes, and killer production featuring some nice dub-inflected drum effects.

| | Eric Dolphy Vintage Dolphy CD (1986)
Hard To Kill music CDs
$14.15 Recorded live at Carnegie Hall, New York, New York on March 14 and April 18, 1963 and live at Everson Museum, Syracuse, New York on March 10, 1962. Includes liner notes by Martin Williams and Gunther Schuller.
Eric Dolphy was a composer, arranger and instrumentalist in the vanguard of the new jazz of the early 1960s, leading his own groups and working with John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman. This posthumous collection of some of Dolphy's rarer, more obscure works gives a fine summation of what he'd done and what he was capable of.
VINTAGE features him in some unusual contexts. A piano-less quartet ("Half Note Triplets"), recalls the Ornette Coleman Quartet of that time, while a freewheeling jam session with a fascinatingly diverse line-up (Don Ellis, Benny Golson, Phil Woods, and Lalo Schifrin), swings the Charlie Parker standard "Donna Lee." There are several pieces composed by Gunther Schuller (who is equally at home with both jazz and classical music) for small chamber ensembles--these address Dolphy's interest in 20th century classical music, and his (and Schuller's) desire to bridge contemporary jazz and classical forms. "Variants on a Theme By Thelonious Monk" is an interesting recasting of Monk's concepts, with Dolphy's tart, vocalized horn wailing over a small jazz group and an understated string quartet.
Eric Dolphy Quartet: Eric Dolphy (saxophone, flute, clarinet, bass clarinet); Edward Armour (trumpet); Richard Davis (bass); J.C. Moses (drums).
Personnel: Eric Dolphy (flute, bass clarinet, alto saxophone); Jim Hall, Barry Galbraith (guitar); Gloria Agostini (harp); Adrienne Galimer, Louis Krasner, Joan Mulfinger, Matthew Raimondi (violin); Samuel Rhodes (viola); George Mulfinger, Jr., Michael Rudiakov (cello); Phil Woods (alto saxophone); Benny Golson (tenor saxophone); Don Ellis, Edward Armour, Nick Travis (trumpet); Jimmy Knepper (trombone); Eddie Costa (piano, vibraphone); Lalo Schifrin (piano); Warren Chiasson (vibraphone); ...

| | 1947 - Blowing The Fuse: 28 R&B Classics That Rocked The Jukebox CD (2004) (Import) Import; Germany
Hard To Kill album
$25.69 Blowing the Fuse is a killer series of compilation CDs issued by Germany's premier archivist label, Bear Family. Subtitled "R&B Classics That Rocked the Jukebox," each volume is compiled by year. 1947 was a boom year for jukeboxes across the United States. This volume, like most of the others, contains 28 affirmed classics of the early postwar years. Louis Jordan was at the height of his powers in '47 and his "Let the Good Times Roll" opens the set and is followed by Albert Ammons' "Swamp River Boogie," a burning boogie-woogie piano jumper. Sequencing is key in a collection like this, and the folks at Bear Family understand this implicitly. Here, Jack McVea's "Open the Door Richard" is just ahead of Amos Milburn's "Down the Road Apiece," which is followed by Savannah Churchill's "I Want to Be Loved Only by You." Elsewhere the Ravens, the Five Blazes, Julia Lee and Walter Brown make appearances, as do Joe Turner, Hadda Brooks and Roy Milton. In some, the more well-known tunes of the era are given great balance by some nearly forgotten gems. The package is beautiful with Colin Escott's liner notes detailing every cut, accompanied by photographs and a lovely digipack. ...
