Seattle's These Arms are Snakes--featuring former members of hardcore bands Kill Sadie and Botch--have mastered the rarefied subgenre of prog-punk, throwing pre-MIDI analog synths together with massive thrash guitars and savage vocals. It's angry and arty and smart. Their second album for Jade Tree is an unrelenting assault, from the opening Led Zep-like stomper "Mescaline Eyes" to the dissonant folk-rock of "Perpetual Bris" (ouch), to the howling insanity of "Crazy Woman Dirty Train."

Alternative Press (p.196) - "[M]uch of EASTER burns with an energy that harkens back to American underground icons, while still exploring dynamics and sounding remarkably contemporary." Kerrang (Magazine) (p.48) - "[A] seething slab of hardcore, all writing riffs, combustible rhythms, and Steve Snore's anguished howls." These Arms Are Snakes Easter Songs Easter Review

| | Minus The Bear Menos El Oso CD (2005)
Easter CD music
$11.99 Minus the Bear continue their brand of quirky-cum-arty rock with light, airy harmonies and somewhat experimental guitars on "The Game Needed Me" as lead singer Jake Snider doles out lines in the vein of Cake's lead singer. Partially spoken, partially sung, the overall effort is decent but wouldn't whet everyone's sonic palette. "Memphis & 53rd" on the other hand begins with an almost drum'n'bass flavor prior to going into a quasi ska-rock format recalling a timid English Beat. Musically it's a collage of different genres, with the chorus melding them all adequately. Minus the Bear finally hits paydirt on the mid-tempo but inviting "Drilling," fuelled by the drumming of Erin Tate and the guitar work of Snider and David Knudson. At times it's not quite guitar "noodling," but the melodies revolve around intricate and winding riffs as they do on "The Fix," which builds in momentum. When the band opts for a pedestrian, atmospheric pace as they do on "El Torrente," it seems to fall flat, more of a breather or experimental filler than anything truly worth repeated listens. Catchier is "Pachuca Sunrise" with a great hop in its step that brings to mind something that Death Cab for Cutie might attempt at some point. Perhaps the highlight of the record is the barren and radio-friendly urgent rock displayed during "Michio's Death Drive" with its keyboard touches. It comes off as ...

| | Red Sparowes Every Red Heart Shines Toward The Red Sun CD (2006)
Easter album
$13.09 Instrumentals in metal are nothing new (heck, Metallica used to put one on every record!), but what is a new occurrence is the veritable wave of purely instrumental bands that seem to have spewed out of nothing in the waning years of the first decade of the ol' 21st. Some, like Pelican, are bands that have just simply brushed aside the need for a vocalist, letting guitar parts handle such melodies and harmonies and keeping a basic song structure that is, for the most part, band-driven. Others, like the "guitar collective" that is Tone, are more, well, collective in sound, sort of a wall of music, with guitars layered on top of guitars, all playing the same chord changes to produce something that sounds more like heavy-duty ripples emanating from a common center. If there is one band that manages to capture the grey area that the aforementioned bands create between them, it is certainly Red Sparowes, who do it to great effect on Every Red Heart Shines Toward the Red Sun. The tracks are indeed straightforward songs (like Pelican's work) -- even if they do have ridiculously long titles -- yet they manage to feel like group workouts, much like the collective sounds of Tone. The songs themselves on Every Red Heart saunter between lush, dreamy metalgaze -- without all the effects of Justin Broadrick's Jesu, for example -- and a brighter (yet still pretty damned heavy) version of Neurosis. There are some post-rock elements (even a bit of country twang, it must be noted) as well, which -- surprisingly ...
